Room For All

Welcome to Wondercafe2!

Yup - most are done 'illegally' here - families, small groups etc. In public parks, school yards, middle of the street, empty parking lots, backyards. Not particularly safe. I think for the huge displays, that a particular license is required to purchase those type of fireworks & site safety inspections occur.

We hear them here too at the Eid celebrations to end Ramadan.

A few years back, my son & gf were in Paris on Bastille Day - went to see the fireworks display at the Eiffel Tower - that NOW was certainly memorable.

One year we were in Harper's Ferry, historic area of the US - on July 4 and really enjoyed the huge fireworks event.

What's the most memorable fireworks display you've seen?
Anyone here can get a permit, which may help cut down a bit on the illegal aspects. Getting a good location is tough though, need special permission for a city park, can't be too close to buildings, etc. Helps to keep things safe. The community lake sets them off on one side of the lake where normally there is little there, mostly just fishing and some people launch their own water floaties. Entry isn't allowed on that side hours beforehand. Viewing is on the main park side, plus other places in the community give good viewing. They just do it once a year, a full fireworks display is pricey!

Diwali and New Years are when we tend to get some illegal ones. Usually minimal. New Years this past year there was more. Some community members did do it fairly safely, although from a park without permission. Others were not so safe, people were complaining of debris in their backyards!

So today, although I knew that some day it would happen, the old guy's nephew delivered the rest of his ashes to me. He said, "sorry, there's not much left"; I haven't dared look to see if there's enough for a piece of jewellery.

Good morning, all! From fireworks to Guy Fawkes Day (aka the Gunpowder Plot), to ashes, all logically connected, though in this instance not too closely related. Let us continue the conversation, armored with tea, coffee, or other such hot drinks. The coffee cart is up and running.

Fireworks at Diwali were made legal in our area.
Here is the fireworks bylaw:
No person shall set off any fireworks on any day except Canada Day, Diwali and Victoria Day and two days preceding and two days following the said holiday periods unless such person has first obtained a permit pursuant to paragraph 6 of this by-law except in the event that inclement weather prevents the setting off of ..

Wonder if London has done that. We have fairly big South Asian population though a lot of them are Muslims.

Not a fan of that, at least for cities. The permit aspect covers safety.

Minor accomplishment today.
My spices needed a refresh, and my spice holder was a mess.
I ordered new spices/herbs from the Silk Road Spice Merchant , plus a 3 jars each of two different sizes.
Youngestson cleaned out the shelves with me, then, i went to town.
Threw out old, filled some, got everything that was in bags out of bags via new jars, plus some old ones that i had.

Now I have my spare spices in a box in the cupboard, and only smaller amounts in glass jars in the cupboard, away from light.
They are also alphabetically ordered. (Spice mixes are in a separate area)

** I am not good at having chaos in the kitchen, and my spouse had commented about my order of new spices, as it looked like it would add to the chaos.
I am happy to say, much order has returned, and the spices are good

Probably getting near time to refresh some of ours, too. There's some we don't use much any more now that I don't do my Indian cooking anymore (Mrs. M finds it too spicy and Little M, who does like it, isn't home and cooks his own now in any case).

After a rainy morning, it seems to be brightening up here. I'm getting a bit spoiled after spending my last two workdays on the deck. At least it is cooler. Yesterday was getting well past my heat and humidity tolerances.

*sigh* the funeral home's internet has been unreliable so they said today they are not doing any streaming - after all the information has been sent to everyone.
You would think during covid restrictions streaming would be fairly essential for a funeral provider.
I'm fairly certain a different one would have been selected if they were upfront about their lack of streaming and didn't state this at the last minute.

From kitchen spice collections, to disrupted travel plans, to business services with unreliable ISPs, the list of joys and frustrations, large or small, is endless. Let us find a place for support and celebration and everything in between at the coffee cart, where warming beverages of all kinds are yours for the asking.
