I'm here with a birthday cake for @GordW. Today is his birthday. Let's celebrate!

Time do fly ... dude ... thus done and past!

Had one of those moments today that made me go "this is why I exist"

I met this guy, B, who I associate with Kaslo and Kaslo's health. He is funny, British, elderly, and has had a horrific life. Every day when I see him I would greet him with a hello and a mutual fist bump. If it was a good day, he would tell one of his many unique jokes. And he is one of these people who know when it is time to move on.

I haven't seen him for long enough. Some people have been asking aboot him.

And today I saw him. He looked the roughest I have ever seen him. So I said hi. He smiled. And I asked if a fist bump would be ok. We did it. Then I mainly listened to him. And tried to shove the many concerns and time related things away and just be with him.

Not try to fix. Listen. Be.

It was a great experience. A sobering experience. Two human beings, connecting.

I. Love. This. Town.

Connecting is difficult in an antisocial atmosphere that proves to dispositions of denial and elimination ... leading to spots in the dark ... dialectic marks?
Like 2 Ayes in the silence ... double vision ... Aye there!

Good morning! For birthday celebrations, for the singing of Happy Birthday, for all that transpired yesterday, and for what thoughts, events, and moments come our way to day, we're here for it. Let us gather in peace around the Coffee Cart, where we can chat about everything, over tea, coffee and eclairs. The coffee is, of course, fresh brewed, tea water is ready, and the eclairs warm from the bakery. All is ready, everybody welcome. Come in when you can, have a mug or cup and an eclair, and join in the festivities!

Then there is this word Kalam ...

The word kalām has multiple meanings, including a school of theology, a type of pen, and an Arabic word that means "speech"

Quick write that down before it escapes you Jane as a great calamity! Imagine a woman deprived of word ... then sometimes I wish I was on the way back there route! There's even a Wayback in Texas but they rather go elsewhere ... and create an incident! Sometimes intricately so they can blame it on the other and walk away with virtual trinkets ... slick tricks due to the greasy Yans ... getting into the pokes, purses and pouches of the community!

I had a team of 20 this year, most of them girls. I have all kinds of kids. I have one that is a textbook skier and is probably technically better than I am. I have another that is so aggressive, she scares me.
The aggressive girl won the provincial finals a couple weeks ago, then won a prestigious dual slalom yesterday.

She spent every chair ride we had together, quizzing me on the new technical and tactical coaching I was introducing to the team from my recent coaching course. We went over the bits I was trying to introduce to her skiing to compliment her "full send" approach to the sport. We talked about managing risk-reward and where to go for it and where to hold back a bit.

I'm on cloud 9 for her. She's such a great kid, too.

Imagine musing those cats! Then the tense ... downhill it goes!

With a totally open psyche could one observe the problem with excess emotions blinds the intellectual process to the point that those devoid of intelligence could not identify with the word stew PID as a primary Ide?

From there some psyches expand while others are fixated on emotional content ... thus blowing it ...

I don't know this but, I have a feeling ... common in mortals that sense that something isn't right and that's all that's left over ... consequence of the burn!

I have one that is a textbook skier and is probably technically better than I am.
This one fell in a race about 4 weeks ago and suffered a mild concussion. She won the first race of the season, but hasn't raced since the fall on doctor's recommendations. It puts things in perspective when the textbook skier has a concussion but the aggressive one is still racing. You never know.

I just bought a new helmet yesterday. I've had 3 falls in the past 12 months where I banged my head. I'm at the age where I can't pull rabbits out of hats like I used to. My helmet was overdue for replacement anyway, but I made sure to get one this season. Plus, each new generation of helmets are better.

This textbook skier will coach next year. I've negotiated that she move up an age category from where most coaches start, because she needs to ski in front of kids who are strong and coordinated enough to emulate her style. She doesn't have to say a word - just ski where they can see her and she will have done her job in year 1. We need to clone her. And of course, we need her learning how to provide feedback and plan a lesson.

The aggressive one has another year of eligibility remaining and I've been teasing about how we can't have her coach the littlest ones in two years because she'll intimidate them. "Mommy, my coach scares me!" She insists she's great with kids, and I believe her, but man she scares me with how hard she attacks.

I was tasked this year with coaching while making new coaches out of these teenagers. I didn't succeed with all 20, but of the six who are in their last year of eligibility and intend to coach next year, there isn't a single one I wouldn't trust to ski with young kids, talk with them, coach them, or handle an emergency. They're all amazing young women, technically strong or better, and the little racers are in good hands next year.

Sorry, can't stop bragging about them.

There is another fast girl. She's on the school rowing team. Yes, her school has a rowing team. She is incredibly powerful. She beat the aggressive one in club champs. Any of these three (technical, aggressive, and powerful) could beat the others on a given day. It's so fun to watch.

And I realize that I'm not feeding the homeless here. I'm teaching privileged teenagers, half of them private school kids, in a sport that is prohibitively expensive and out of reach to 98% of Canadians at this level of season passes and training costs. But what I do try to do is talk to them about empathy, especially those who don't show much. And most of them are great kids and understand their privilege on some level. I even talked to them about Carter and how he should have been here with them this year, and they listened intently and thoughtfully. There are future leaders in Canadian industry and commerce in my group, and they are pretty damn good kids. They were born on second or third base, but that's not their fault.

It's not their fault. But whose job is it to teach them what the bottom is like? Because they have no idea, ergo, NO EMPATHY.

All worth bragging aboot, chansen

They are fortunate to have someone like you to teach them -- your ethics, humour, intelligence, and experience are invaluable...

Oh and another Kaslow first

Got to get involved with a burn

My landlady, her dog and I, now that pretty much the snow is gone, made a nice fire to get rid of some of the winter debris

She got so much ash in her hair lol

Lots of thick smoke

Looks like tis the season as I have been seeing other people do thus

Mtn lake existence :3

You're right, and in the 5 hours a day I have with them, I can't show them the bottom. Not on the side of a hill in a private ski club.

But I can tell you that some have a sense of where they are and an appreciation for it. Some volunteer. Some parents are better than others at providing a more well rounded view of the world.

Most are good-hearted kids. Some....are not. But my team, I like. One of the kids who hangs around my team too much, I want to throw off a chairlift.

Thank you DL, you're the best. I forget when I first joined Wondercafe. It was over 6.5 years ago, because I was still living in Canada. Then I got banned from Wondercafe 2 for about 4 years, and returned in August 2024

Good morning! Happy midweek! Skiing success for coaches and skiers, deep thoughts and insights to ponder, the stuff that will arise today, we gather round the Coffee Cart to discuss, sort out, and offer support. We do this over tea and coffee, and baked goodies. Today we have bagels and various spreads for them. The coffee is fresh brewed, tea water at the boiling point, and the bagels warm and nicely toasted. Come join the conversations! All is ready, all are welcome. Come and get it!
