The aggressive girl won the provincial finals a couple weeks ago, then won a prestigious dual slalom yesterday.I had a team of 20 this year, most of them girls. I have all kinds of kids. I have one that is a textbook skier and is probably technically better than I am. I have another that is so aggressive, she scares me.

She spent every chair ride we had together, quizzing me on the new technical and tactical coaching I was introducing to the team from my recent coaching course. We went over the bits I was trying to introduce to her skiing to compliment her "full send" approach to the sport. We talked about managing risk-reward and where to go for it and where to hold back a bit.
I'm on cloud 9 for her. She's such a great kid, too.
Good morning! For birthday celebrations, for the singing of Happy Birthday, for all that transpired yesterday, and for what thoughts, events, and moments come our way to day, we're here for it. Let us gather in peace around the Coffee Cart, where we can chat about everything, over tea, coffee and eclairs. The coffee is, of course, fresh brewed, tea water is ready, and the eclairs warm from the bakery. All is ready, everybody welcome. Come in when you can, have a mug or cup and an eclair, and join in the festivities!

This one fell in a race about 4 weeks ago and suffered a mild concussion. She won the first race of the season, but hasn't raced since the fall on doctor's recommendations. It puts things in perspective when the textbook skier has a concussion but the aggressive one is still racing. You never know.I have one that is a textbook skier and is probably technically better than I am.
Sorry, can't stop bragging about them.
There is another fast girl. She's on the school rowing team. Yes, her school has a rowing team. She is incredibly powerful. She beat the aggressive one in club champs. Any of these three (technical, aggressive, and powerful) could beat the others on a given day. It's so fun to watch.
And I realize that I'm not feeding the homeless here. I'm teaching privileged teenagers, half of them private school kids, in a sport that is prohibitively expensive and out of reach to 98% of Canadians at this level of season passes and training costs. But what I do try to do is talk to them about empathy, especially those who don't show much. And most of them are great kids and understand their privilege on some level. I even talked to them about Carter and how he should have been here with them this year, and they listened intently and thoughtfully. There are future leaders in Canadian industry and commerce in my group, and they are pretty damn good kids. They were born on second or third base, but that's not their fault.
You're right, and in the 5 hours a day I have with them, I can't show them the bottom. Not on the side of a hill in a private ski club. It's not their fault. But whose job is it to teach them what the bottom is like? Because they have no idea, ergo, NO EMPATHY.
Thank you DL, you're the best. I forget when I first joined Wondercafe. It was over 6.5 years ago, because I was still living in Canada. Then I got banned from Wondercafe 2 for about 4 years, and returned in August 2024oh and i want to compliment Jaebius
