Is a female playing the role of Jesus blasphemous?

Except that, again, in this case we were briefly discussing why I'd avoided seeing it ;)

Interesting that you should say that.

To my mind, the most egregiously offensive movie foisted on humanity was The Passion of Christ. Torture porn. I criticized it at the time very heavily and continue to do so today. The difference is that I watched the thing, with a puke bucket handy and the Aging Hippie gently saying "maybe you have to look away now".

Always good to have a Trip partner

And you actually sat through a horror movie? Wow.

Agreed. If you don't know what the movie/book is about then it's just a baseless opinion.
Course, it's quite possible to know what a movie/book is without ever having seen/read the thing Especially in these days of trailers, commercials, social media, online critiques, social media, Rotten Tomatoes, IMDb, etc. it's a non-stop borage of information :D

Okay, now that to me sounds "wyrd" as you might say. If you found it offensive, why see it? That was another one that I avoided, because of the high amount of violence in it. I heard that if the movie depicted what actually happened, Jesus would have been dead four times over before ever making it to the cross. And, anyway, why are we talking about all this here? It should all be going on the "Movies" thread that I set up. I set it up specifically to talk about movies. From here on out I plan to be doing my talking about movies there

Horror movies are one thing; I used to love Stephen King. And many 'art' movies are dead boring. And from the outset, I totally claim to be somewhat video deprived in life; I have rarely watched television or movies or TV shows; it is not in my nature. I listen, and I read. I think I save my last vision for reading.

Torture porn masquerading as religion is a pretty different category. That was an ugly movie on the fragile loving face of Christianity.

Exactly

There is a kind of cultural osmosis?

Things like War and Peace
The Bible
The Middle East
Citizen Kane
Vietnam War
Star Wars
X-Files

Personally I like being surprised when I actually see something I thought I knew and see for myself...

To a certain extent I see The World telling people This Is the Right View or Way to Believe or See This Particular Thing...

Anyway, FUN!!!

I'm sorry you went through that
Horror as an experience isn't supposed to be pleasant. It isn't a positive experience. I find too many flicks being categorized as horror aren't actual horror.

I haven't watched the movie you are writing aboot as I didn't feel I needed to see the horror as I already have a very good imagination to see Christ's suffering as ne plus ultra ungood, which is part of the story for me; otherwise, His suffering isn't important

There is only 1 movie that I have seen that for me was an actual horror movie. Maybe 2? 3?

The Last King of Scotland. Absolutely brutal and I felt horror which was intensely uncomfortable. I almost left.

The other two were Captain Phillips and Schindler's List (which I had to do some techniques on myself to be able to stay)

The one play with horror in it was Equus. Poor horse :( :( :(

so you would be OK with a white guy being cast as Martin Luther King, Jr. in a movie? sigh
MLK may have been inspired by Jesus, and others by MLK - but the fact that he was black and he fought for civil rights for black Americans would be a culturally significant point lost if he were cast as anything other than a black man. He’s also a recent historical figure. The ship has long ago sailed for portraying Jesus the way he really was when he walked the Earth. He’s been mythologized since the New Testament was written. I wonder if he’d cringe at other movies depicting him according to their rigid rules, and embrace progress and equality and diverse people being represented in his name?

But Jesus probably wouldn’t approve of the entertainment industry anyway so maybe it’s all blasphemous. But would he tolerate it and ponder the reasons for it? I think so, as far as I understand the whole point of Jesus - forgiving, open minded compared to the institutions he challenged.. Or maybe he’d be pissed off at all of it, equally. Jesus Christ Superstar was never traditional!

Yes and no. I did not see Passion of the Christ and I feel qualified to hold an opinion about it. It was reviewed extensively when it came out and clips were shown in theaters.

OTOH my minister at the time went to see the movie although she was horrified by the idea She felt she needed to see it in order to express a credible opinion. This was Gretta Vosper by the way. Good on her!

D' arkness, darkness ... the sign given that the light went out in the heavens ... why ah void is like ... well something missing ... and yet experts insist on opinions about something that isn't ... do powerful men have dark souls? Go figure that story ... and why some are dark on the outside!

Oh ... Heart of Darkness ...

I know people that read it and got nothing from it!

I didn't see Passion of the Christ either. I didn't like what I saw in the reviews or previews. I wouldn't presume to think I could participate in a discussion about it at this point.

Your faculties are totally slipping.

MLK Jrs whole role in life was to forward the civil rights movement in the U.S. gaining full rights for people NOT deemed to be white. So, it would be very confusing to cast MLK white. However, it would not be ridiculous to make MLK female.

Beloved child of godde is not a gendered thing at all.

Of course, a Black man was needed to help bring justice to other Blacks. What you don't get is that a Jewish male was similarly needed to pursue equality for women in a patriarchal culture.
Jesus and Paul were men in a patriarchal culture where women were their husband's property. So only men like Jesus and Paul had the ability to defend the rigfhts of women to equality.

I would
I would be ok if a Canadian paraplegic Autistic Amish Stutterer Commie played him
And like my comment on diversity of belief and opinion above, not everyone would feel the same way
How people react isn't objective. It is subjective. A mix of cultural and personal character imho
