How was church today?

Welcome to Wondercafe2!

We had a combine service of 3 united churches, one Anglican and one Presbyterian in the Presbyterian church this morning.. Ross Lockhart form VST was guest preacher and he preached the story from acts about the lad who fell asleep during Paul's preaching and fell 3 stories.

Communion. Long service -almost 2 hours-but great to worship in a full church.

Lovely words to the hymns but the music was dirge like.

One of our members, who is a pastor, preached today and gave a wonderful message from the book of Esther. We also had some really delightful music.

Afterwards, we had a lunch and business meeting, and another member and myself were elected to the office of Trustee.

Today Rev. Danielle was preaching on Hope. Every year the ministers at our church preach sermons based on the Oscar nominated pictures. Today the sermon was based on the movie, "Hidden Figures." The struggles and amazing accomplishments of the women in this movie and how they never gave up hope. We are blessed to have Rev. Danielle as her sermons are always thoughtful and inspiring.

I've had preached to me that there are no sacred things ... thus there can be no hidden figures ... we just don't see them right ... and they are left behind ... like Petre dangling in the temple or below it as things like this occur in dungeons ... it is a lesser level in one regard ... of how the mind sees things! It as a abstract formless thing can be manipulated in heat and hammering ... kind 's iron-Q!

Church today was wonderful.
Seelergirl and grandson joined us. Grandson, almost 13, no longer goes up for the children's story. But he told his mother ahead of time that he would go out for Sunday School if there were any other teens, otherwise he would remain with us in church. It's spring break in NB and not as many kids were present, but when he saw two brothers (15 and 13) going out he jumped up from the pew, opened the gate and almost ran to catch up.
I read scripture. Genesis 2 and 3 (selected verses) - not my favourite story; and Matthew's account of the Temptation in the Desert (a favourite). The minister thanked me after the service, commenting that she could tell I liked it. Someone else said that I 'make scripture come alive for them'. Perhaps that is a gift. I do my preparation and I enjoy reading - it shows.

Communion today. The children returned from their classes.

One very small disappointment - in the gospel reading Satan quotes from a psalm. It reminded me that that psalm has been made into a hymn "On Eagles Wings". It's one of my favourites and I hoped we would sing it. We didn't.

The music for today was somber (but appropriate for Lent).

Nice conversation time over coffee and sweets after the formal service. A choir member loaned me the book we will be reading and discussing at bookclub. After church Seelerman and I took a drive out in the country and stopped at a restaurant for dinner.

Senior pastor was away so the youth minister preached the sermon. He spoke about a time in his life when two male friends of his were killed in a car accident and at the funeral how one of the boys sisters sang a song of joy in honour of her brother whom she had been very close to. He spoke how this had such a profound effect on him, that she could even sing at the funeral and that it was a joyful song. He then told us that he had told this story many many times to others including us on Sunday.
Years later, he ran into this woman and told her what a positive effect that she had on his life because at that time he had just been diagnosed with cancer at the age of 21....she said she never realized that she would have touched anyone that day because she was mourning the loss of her brother.......anyway, the point of his sermon was that sometimes we don't realize that how we live our lives may effect someone profoundly without us even realizing it.

Yet there are still those that disbelieve the existence of sol ... little more the sub con science factor ... or that we are unconscious of! It is always with us as a Shadow ... and some deny it to follow their free will that may not give a damn about the balance of the utopian characters ... a great hoard of them out there in the dark Ness!

There was no official Sunday School today, as it is March Break. But it's the first Sunday this year that my grandson could come to church with me. So I called up one other child I knew and we had unofficial (pretend) Sunday School. I taught a lesson about Jesus healing a leper, after I acted (and looked) the part of a leper. We did a craft and then had time to play tag. They taught me toilet tag, princess tag and skunk tag. I was the slowest one so I kept being 'it'. Fun though.

Amnesty International conducted our service today. I got to sit in the congregation. The speaker was from the First Nations Community and spoke on what reconciliation will look like. She took questions after. I also helped lead a confirmation class after service.

Today a very impressive sermon by a retired minister. Rev. Frank is a contemporary of my late Dad so he must be around 90. He still preaches a powerful sermon. Today he was speaking about how people sometimes pass by a familiar scripture without really stopping and paying attention. God really does love creation and sometimes we miss how profound that is. Glad I was there today as it was a good reminder.

Our minister who almost always leads worship is on vacation for three weeks so today our other minister (faith development and pastoral care) took the service. (I personally would like to see them divide their duties differently and have each lead worship occasionally - perhaps the second minister leading worship and the first working with the youth once a month).

It was nice to hear a different voice from the pulpit, and I liked the choice of hymns. "I was there to hear your borning cry". I leaned over to a friend in the adjoining pew and whispered "I hope they sing this at my funeral." I know that it is usually used for baptism but the minister presented it as a celebration of God's presence in our lives from birth to death. That is how I've always looked at it too.

March break and only a few children for Sunday School. Grandson is with his father this weekend so I wasn't surprised or disappointed that he wasn't there, though he loves this minister and probably would have stayed in the sanctuary to here her if he'd been there. Perhaps despite the cold he was out downhill skiing.

We had a similar incident with an old idea'r ... on jabberwaulque ... a linguistic trait set up especially for those impressed with not knowing anything, nothing, or eternal as an un Godly stretch to those confining God to a box, Saac, or Baulk ... before you knew it chee was gone with heh ... due to un godly dynamics of the other side ... thus cognizance of other goings on because of inner sources!

The staid resist ... derogatorily saying this is alien tongues ... just because they don't know ...

Really enjoyed the church service I went to on the weekend in downtown Toronto. Very friendly people, great music (two guitars, bass & drums), and good message from Hebrews. The pastor preached in a style I hadn't encountered before - off of his PowerPoint notes. A nice lunch was held afterwards shish, the pastor told me, they also considered to be part of their worship. I HD some really good discussions with people there too.

This is not automatically a good thing. I had a prof in library who literally read his overheads (the 80s version of PowerPoint). We would have learned just as much of he had just put the slides up and let us copy them out without him saying a word.

But if you mean he had his sermon in the attached notes in PowerPoint so he could have it follow along tightly with the slide deck, then that is fine. It's using PowerPoint as intended.

I have yet to use a slide deck for a sermon, though I did use some slides for a summer service once (no sermon, more interaction).

Film night tonight at our church. Movies (after Pizza) every Tues in Lent. It is called "Lens on Lent". Great turnout 1/2 the people there are not part of the congregation.

Movie tittles are announced well ahead of time.
Tonight was my choice. It was 'smoke signals" by Sherman Alexie. We had seen it in my work book club and I liked it.
I led tonight's discussion.
as an aside Smoke Signals was the first movie portraying Indians that was written, directed and produced by Indians and also had all the Indian characters played by Indians.

Slides ... an obvious support system to the sounding off of words in the sermon as they took flight ... Volant-cy, or sigh?

An interesting sermon by Rev. Sheena today. She was speaking on the themes raised in the film Lala Land. She was speaking of the value of having dreams and pursuing them. My dream is to be feeling better so I get out riding my bike again. My dreams have always been about living in the moment rather than something grand and unattainable. Oh well, back to the world of dreams...;)
