How was church today?

Good service today. The hymns were okay - but I didn't know most of them. Solid prayer. One of our church members gave a good devotional about the imago Dei. The Pastor and I read through the entire book of Jonah before he preached based on it. After the service, we had one of our wonderful, potluck Fellowship Lunches.

I kind of wish we still did this. Alas, they were replaced with a "brunch and discussion" in lieu of a service on the first Sunday of the month and I have no interest in that. This has been going on for close to four years, though, so I assume others do not feel as I do.

Is the discussion organized?

There's a moderator who sets the topic and keeps things on track. While I was still on Worship Weavers (what we call our worship committee), there was some concern about people straying into idle chit-chat but that seems to be under control from what I've heard. With my inactivity and disinterest in the First Sunday Potluck (as they call it), I'm not totally in the loop. The fact that it has lasted this long suggests that it is a success. I still wonder what a newcomer who arrives on a first Sunday with no background beyond traditional services makes of it. At one time, when I was reacting more to my Christian past, it might actually have sold me on the place, to be honest.

I like the idea of a brunch and discussion. I've participated in men's breakfasts that have run similarly. Wouldn't want it in lieu of a regular service though.

I led services at a 2-point charge again. The worship is meaningful and heartfelt by both groups, and the people actually talk about the message afterwards. The teacher in me likes that people are thinking and talking...not always agreeing, of course. I found myself, at one point, sitting at a time when I was supposed to be standing and leading, and the congregation was supposed to sit. That's when I realized that I get it mixed up sometime....not a minister, but not part of the congregation. Also, now that I am more known at these churches, people feel comfortable enough to criticize, e.g. my hymn choices today. I will develop a thicker skin (repeat until it happens).

That's kind of my issue. A breakfast and discussion is something I would get behind on its own, but having it as the service is a bit harder for me to wrap my head around.

Our service had the theme of Volunteer Appreciation, and we also had a fun little "thespian" Call to Gather, and a very interesting communion. The Rev was at her imaginative heights this week; it was very well done, although a tiny bit "seat of one's pants", which our productions often are, lol...Following the service we had a "Job Fair" in the Hall with the coffee and tea.

Today Rev. Sheena's message was on the image of God as Mother Hen. Fiercely protecting and gathering Her brood. Got me thinking of churches I have attended through the years that are named after guys like Knox and Calvin and St. Paul and St. Andrew. I think I'd like to worship someday in Mother Hen United. Would make for an interesting stained glass window too.

We have St. Margaret's Anglican in town.

An Anglican church that I volunteer at has a most wonderful worship space that is very open to the outside through lots of windows and at certain times of the day these happen (makes for more fun communion..."wow...Christ's blood is upon me. Woooot!)

As usual the troll raises as stink in the bog ... sort of like Pogo in counterpoint ... the point of the other side as Snow White's prick of the finger ... rose apples?

Mind yer digits ...

I appreciate the thought that must have gone into the design and creation of those wonderful windows. I recall as a child spending time during services just watching the play of light through the windows. The edges of some windows were bevelled and therefore I got to watch 'rainbows' playing across other parts of the room. Awesome.

Today's sermon was a discussion between the former Affirming Coordinator Pam Rocker and the new Affirming Coordinator Keith Murray. Keith seems like an interesting person so wish him well in his ministry with Hillhurst.
