My father died peacefully this morning. I'm thankful for the last couple of years of getting to know him in a different way. I'm thankful he essentially died in his sleep under the excellent care of nurses and doctors at University Hospital in London. It sucks to be so far away right now.

Hugs Northwind. Condolences to you and your family.

Good morning, all. We offer our condolences for the loss of a father, and give thanks for the technology that made it possible to at least see and communicate at some level, across long distances. providing a chance to say farewell. We also remember, sadly, the 215 children (and many others besides) for whom that wasn't even a possibility.
In a place south of here, today is marked as 'Memorial Day.' We might take this as a chance to remember those loved ones, and those known to us only through news reports, no longer with us yet always on our minds and in our hearts. I've set up the virtual White Board, along with markers of all colours, to list names and offer short messages. (But don't let the coffee. tea/ hot chocolate get cold)

It's a quiet morning here. I'm working on a sock and drinking coffee. We're moving to a park north of here for the week. We know where we will be now until the 16th. Presuming we will be sailing on the 16th, we know where we will be until the end of June.

I'm getting addicted to scrappy socks. I have a pile of leftovers to use up. I'm doing these from the toe-up so I can use all this yarn.

Good morning! The coffee cart is up and running. Let us celebrate creative ways to use leftover yarn and such. Let us also, as we begin a new month, remember the new beginnings that come about in our living.

Carts and chariots are on the move like threatening riots when little folk begin to see what the empire-ist has done to conquer everything ... God goes down in the books of history and histology ... data on thin skins?

Bones of the mental construct are deeper ... placed where people don't know ... the brain being mostly autonomous ... a lonely labour!

Good morning folks. It is a lovely sunny morning here in S. Ontario. Nice temperature. I'm just logging in for the day, it's a work day for me.

Yesterday, I went to do the accounting for the business, and decided that I really should take the updates that i was being prompted about. Then, I reviewed some accounts, and went to load some banking transactions. I couldn't. Eventually read the notes, and discovered that my software would no longer upload unless I upgraded. Dang nabit, but, fair. So, I did. I paid the $500 for the software, and ran the upgrade. It worked fine. The next step, is when you open your company data, it coverts it to new formats.
The upgrade of the data crashed.
Tried again, wouldn't use the file, as it was corrupted from the upgrade!
Luckily had a backup from just before the upgrade. It also failed. Spent an hour researching, testing, trying, nothing worked
It was an unrecoverable error, with dump files, and logs, but ugly to read.

Panic mode sets in. These are my business records. Used for taxes, GST, bill payment, records, etc. Not being able to open a backup. Ouch!
In addition, the upgrade had removed the old software, so could not get it in with that version.

Spent 2 hrs on the phone with support. Lots tried, but, no success. (There is nothing more painful than walking through call centre scripts that you know logically do not fit the scenario or that you have already tried, but knowing that you have to do it)
Ticket had to be escalated, along with my data files attached so that they could open and fix.

Normal timeline is 2-3 days; however, there was a caveat on the screen they were taking up to 5 days longer right now.
Ugh, I really really need to get my finances caught up, and have time to do it, as contract is slow at present.

One option was to download the previous version of the software, but, no idea where the license keys are for it (in a box with other software I am sure). Ugh. going to have to start to dig.

But...... the increase in calls resulting in long queues made me ponder....what changed that they were having lots of corruptions.
As part of the file transfer, they wanted a few company files or backup files sent in, the most recent, and some from previous times. I found another one from before the upgrade. Tried it. It failed too.
So, i started thinking about the patches that i took.
I had a file from 3 weeks ago.
I opened it, and hallelujah, the upgrade occurred without an error.

So, my thoughts are that the patch that i loaded blocked the ability to do the upload (in part as a money grab to get people to upgrade), and also, flipped a switch that resulted in failures when trying to do the upgrade)

On the plus side, I was able to sleep well, and am fairly confident that I will be able to proceed today after work.

Imagine the commentary that AI cannot be wrong or corrupted! With problems I've had with incorruptibility ... I still pose questions on all things observable ... and not ... dark science? We shall all be optimized out of existentialism ... and there it was ... gone! What do we learn from growing holes in the systems of knowledge? Set back theory ... thus some stand down ... mystery continues ad infinitum ...

Computers are wonderful in and of themselves. Computer companies/developers not so much sometimes. That's my learning from 20+ years in IT.

Wow @JayneWonders I felt sick reading that and immense relief when I saw you had figured it out.

It's a warm sunny day here in Campbell River. Dog and I went for a walk along the water. It was lovely. Friendly people, a few other dogs and some eagles. A great way to start the day

Condolences Northwind. Happy though for some sense of resolution. Jayne....that was a scary computer nightmare! I keep thinking I will read this site daily, but then I skip a few and need to do some catching up.
Today was my last physio day for the hip replacement. I think I am still struggling, but the physiotherapist thinks I am doing well, and that I am hard on myself. I have a consult with the surgeon next week so that will tell me more. Apparently, it takes a year to feel close to normal. Patience, Nancy, patience. Oh ya....and exercise, exercise, exercise.

Hopefully it will all look good! It takes a while to rebuild that strength up.

I had foot surgery in 2009. I was told it would take a year to fully heal. I noticed it go through healing stages at 3 and 6 months. At one year it stopped turning red and swelling when I stood for periods of time. It was almost like a switch had been flipped. My joint was fused so I never had physio to get it moving.
