Room For All

Good morning, all! As we contemplate computer problems, and healing from surgery, let us gather in spirit round the coffee cart, where warming drinks of all sorts are available. Enjoy.

Over the last 2 evenings, I've hosted Zoom meetings, one for each of the 2 congregations I serve. It was, as some might say, a 'learning experience.' I how learned:
1. How tenuous some rural internet service can sometimes be
2. How many people had never used Zoom before.
3. How many people don't have computers or internet service.
4. Some (older, I believe) computers do not have cameras and mikes... those with such machines could only communicate through the chat column.

All things considered, both meetings went fairly well. But I have determined that, at least in these circumstances (and likely many other circumstances), Zoom is a poor substitute for actual face to face meetings.

Hi, red-brown

Yup. All true.
Gotomeeting which we use has a phone in component which resolves some of those issues

Teams has the option of adding a voice trunk to your account (for extra $$ of course) for people to call in so similar. We have it set up for our senior team and some other key people (e.g. HR) who see a need. Does Zoom not have the option of adding a voice trunk? I don't know it very well since I have only ever been an attendee outside of helping Mrs. M set it up right after Western went virtual last year.

Zoom does have phone-in capabilities, which some people at both meetings used. However with the basic version (the lowest priced option) none of the call-in numbers are toll-free.

Good morning, all! Time for tea, coffee and other hot drinks, the coffee cart is ready. As we continue to muddle our way through the time being with Zoom and Gotomeeting and other such apps, let us pause for virtual coffee, etc and conversation.

We have had rain, glorious rain, beautiful rain, life giving rain --- all night long, and it is still going. The ground is soaking it up, as it is a good gentle rain.

I'm thankful

We sure need rain. Even when in the forecast, it seems to skip us. Today, there is 30 percent chance. The birds did their best singing to encourage it, and I hung out laundry, also to encourage it! But at the moment, the sun is defying both the birds and me.

Whatever happened to Adobe Connect? Is that still around?
It is, I think. We used it at work for several years but I cancelled the subs once most of our meeting hosts had Teams. It was something like $600 a year per license flat and we had to have a separate voice conferencing account to pair with it since it did not have its own voice conferencing yet at the time we used it (not sure if they offer it now). On the upside, they were concurrent per-meeting licenses (i.e. not tied to a user) so we only had to have 4 licenses (vs. having to have a Teams license for each named user who needs to host meetings or make calls on it).

Good morning. Kind of grey and wet here again. Got plenty of rain in the past 24 hours so at least everything is well-watered.

Just waiting for my family doc to call. This is a new guy. My old one retired at the end of last year (he was close anyway so I think COVID pushed him over the edge). Have never met the new guy, but he was about the only family practitioner in London taking patients so we jumped when we found him.

My desktop computer did not have these built in - but it was simple and relatively inexpensive ($35 - $45 I think for a logitech one) to purchase & add a camera which also then includes a mic. Worked well.

Sound like a challenging night of revelations @Redbaron . I am reminded again of how much some of us middle class urban dwellers take for granted.

Yeah, that's what we do for desktops at work. I think you can also get monitors with them built-in now but I've never tried one. At home, we have a $40 or so Logitech USB webcam with mike for Skyping with Little M. Personally, I prefer a headset or earbuds for the mike but that only works if you're the only one in your location attending.

Good morning, world! Time for coffee, tea, etc! The coffee cart is tuned up and ready to go. Help yourseof.

Thus the stimuli and stigmata are out there ... will many proceed psychosomatically? (dead to mind in a metaphor ... admitting the soul is a strange thing ... threatening to the unenlightened)

May account for the stranger of Galilee ... folks put that down fast ... when it comes to emotional intelligence the brute wins ... thoughts go!

The stuff that is taught in institutions is something else than how it might appear ... until that getting beyond ... OBI?

It remains disgustingly hot here. Yesterday was a tree planting day for my son who lost his shelter belt and orchard to the Dept of Highways. A Go Fund Me started by someone from Humboldt provided money to buy some replacement trees. It was far too hot for me to be outside but others helped. Son, wife, dad, birth mother, friends sweated away until it was done.

Warming up here. Supposed to be hot on the weekend. I am actually in the office today. Got woken up at 4am by an Amber Alert (the one from Ottawa if you're following the news). Time to start putting my phone in a drawer at night again. I've been in the habit of just leaving it on top of the kitchen stereo, which is where the charger is.
