I've almost always had hounds or labs, never attempted a shepherd. A favourite "new" cousin of mine in England ("new" as in she's a cousin's cousin, not my blood, but I've 'known' 'of' her forever and finally got to meet her last fall, and instantly fell in "family love". She has a 5 month old Belgian Malinois puppy (a shepherd type). Search the breed on Youtube; they are super smart and agile, and Tully is just precious.

Chemguy has brought up the dog thing multiple times this summer. I think we're closer to going for it, a poodle. Poodles aren't really my favourite dogs, but a fair bit of that is just looks. In terms of behavioural match it's probably good. Ideally I would love for it to be a service dog for me, although I'm not counting on it. I do hope it can work as a medic alert dog even if it doesn't meet all the criteria to be a service dog. I have a friend who does training and spoke to her a while ago about this stuff, apparently the medic alert stuff is fairly easy to do if there's something a dog can actually pick up on. It's the distraction aspect where most dogs fail.

We're still far away from anything, but breeders are being looked into right now and Chemguy seems to have found one that he thinks looks good.

Good morning, all! The coffee cart is running. Let us gather and swap dog anecdotes, or cat stories, or trained goldfish stories if you have any.

Poodles are very smart. Don’t shed which I suspect would be good for you Chemgal. Need grooming but the usual fussy cut is just for shows. Most have a “lamb cut”. Trimmed all over
they do need lots of exercise. And socialization.

for non shedding dogs avoid the short haired labs, retrievers

Yes, I think poodles have had an unfair rap as being "cute" aka "airhead" dogs. Nothing could be further from the truth. If well-socialized, they are great companions and very smart like Lastpointe said. If I were to ever get a dog, it would likely be a poodle or a crossbreed. I usually like larger breeds though.
Tully is very adorable.

I love standard poodles. In our old neighborhood a lady had two black ones. They were so lovely

i would be careful about poodle mixes. People like them because they are trendy now. A nice golden poodle mix they hope gives them a laid back “golden“ personality with a non shedding poodle coat. But that doesn’t work out a lot of the time

for anyone with alergies non shedding dogs are a must. Though they still obviously bring in a lot of dirt

our bouvier is also smart, non shedding, loyal, requires grooming

some terriers are non shedding too but they bark a lot for the most part Bred to bark and scare away vermin

Sitting having my second coffee. Our nice sunny day has dissolved into clouds sadly

i have some fresh picked apples from our field for anyone to eat or take home to make apple sauce

The nice thing about the Room is that it can be moved anywhere at anytime. Freddy has lots of brew pubs, so if anyone (not me) knows how to pull a pint, maybe we could do a "Fredericton Night" and other places around the world....experts abound!

Good question. What province is the Room located in?

Maybe we can say it's extra-national and doesn't need a liquor license. But the host is in Kingston or somewhere out that way, so I guess Ontario.

Airshow is on today so it is getting noisy around here. With the Snowbirds grounded, it's mostly US teams and demos this year. And, of course, there are no ground displays. It's drive in with social distancing. You watch from your car. Or your back deck if you live in the right part of London. I am too far from the airport but they do swing out this way when lining up a pass or whatever.

I like little dogs, I love the idea of a little yorkie poo. Chemguy is more into medium sized, sporty dogs. When we picture what we want as a dog, poodle doesn't fit the image. I think temperament will be a good fit though, which is more important. I've actually heard yorkies make good medic alert dogs, but don't tend to get respect from the public, so a poodle would be a better option if the dog works out that way but I'm more concerned about night for the medic alert aspect than the legal service dog access. He's the one checking out breeders websites for now. I think (hope? I should check haha) he's looking at miniature, not toy or standard. We had discussed a dog that I could pick up, but not purse-sized dog.

The miniature poodles are sweet. Being small, getting enough exercise isn't as much of a challenge as with a larger dog. Just walks around the block and some play fetch times. They are every bit as capable of service and loyalty as larger dogs.

Is it too early for one of those nice reds @BetteTheRed came up with the other night? Found it. Enjoying the cool evening. I have my fall duvet in use now. I am obsessed with the "Camel through the eye of the needle" ideas. Wish I could go on and on about it but I won't, dont worry :nerd:

Not at all. Help yourself to an Old Speckled Hen (my other commercial UK fav). I love beer names in England.

I have often thought (I do occasionally pursue reincarnation ideas for fun) that I'd love to come back, just once, as a rich person, to test my own theories. Could I be 'good' with an excessive amount of money? I dunno. Money has never interested me much (which is usually a good predictor for someone who will not have a lot). I've had really broke periods (single parent with two kids and not much financial help from their dad), but lots of "just enough for my limited needs", and the odd trip thrown in (I do enjoy periodic visits to my family in the U.K.). I've been "clerical/administrative staff" my whole professional working life, in academic institutions, so I was always "reasonably well" paid, for "pink collar" type work and have a "just sufficient" little pension, which I supplement with a part-time job and a boarder downstairs.
