I don't think the loon felt threatened for himself as at no time was I moving in a direction towards him. I think he felt concerned for his family, who were not visibly around.

I have experienced loons behaving like this too. My partner likes to grin and remind me that they are called Crazy Loons for a reason. Mostly I think they are trying to get you to look at them instead of their family who are in the area. It is very effective - like the help - I've got a broken wing thing that killdeers do. So far I haven't heard of loons attacking humans!

I agree, KayTheCurler, I think he was trying to distract me to keep me away from his family.

After my initial reaction, I wasn't concerned about him attacking me, as his family was not close by, I think it was just a warning and distraction, but my immediate reaction was "get outa here".

I do know loons are very strong birds.

I've encountered those looney loons on a canoe trip too ... it was the male creating a big commotion to attract our attention when we silently rounded a bend & came near him. Not too far away, the female was ushering several young to safety, while he kept us busy & entertained. Nature is so very interesting!

I love that you go for an early morning kayak Beloved - must be very peaceful. A few of my neighbours have kayaks & roll them a few blocks down to the beach of Lake Ontario quite often for a paddle.

So true Pinga - we Canadians just tend to stride around, trusting but alert, in places many of our US neighbours would not tread. Glad you had a safe walk, with Security looking on like a parent from a distance as the youngster walks off to school :-)

beloved, I am just thinking of the beauty of the lake, the kayak, and then the craziness of the loon. I don't have an answer, but, I am thankful for the vignette.

Does anyone have plans for the long weekend?

Staying home for the long weekend :) Getting together with neighbours after work tomorrow for wine & nibblies on their patio. Friends who have returned from summer in Israel will join us here for dinner on Saturday - so it will be very interesting to hear their stories. Other than that - relaxing! On Tuesday I will go over to the church to meet & welcome our new minister.
Looking forward to all of it.

What about you pinga? Plans? Young men off to school?

I never heard of a loon attacking, but I do know that birds will harass anyone or anything that gets close to their nests - zooming in and out, screaming, possibly pecking, trying to drive away the intruder (be it a cat or a man).

Four days of VBS. One more to go. I'm getting very tired. Grandson is enjoying it and doing well.

(ps - Grandson is staying with his mother tonight, and she will drive him in tomorrow morning.)

I'm looking forward to being at home, Carolla. Going to be travelling every other week for a bit, and well, lots of stuff going on. Will spend time with Dad, will bbq dinners and cook for the guys. Oldest is headed to interviews up north next week. I would like to get out and do something, but we shall see. I need time for mellow due to the stresses which weave in & out, and are evidenced in melt downs, bizarre responses, and the occasional dumps/presumptions, and departures. Mellow is definitley my goal this weekend. I am thankful for friends who recognize the situation and are including me in their socials and gatherings.

Going to still be at cabin . . . hope to get a few more kayak paddles in, and a few more loon adventures. We hope to stay out til the end of September, but weather will determine that. I do have two trips out of town in September, and our fall presybtery meeting is at our church, so September will be a busy month.

The long weekend will be quiet, just hubby and me . . . daughter staying in town this weekend, and no company expected.

We will start to "put away" for the winter . . . starting with bringing the floating dock in, as no one will be swimming now.

Carolla, hope you have a great visit with friends. A new minister - an exciting time for all at your church.

Glad you have a break in the driving, seeler, with your grandson. I'm glad he is going and enjoying it.

Thinking of you as you "mellow' this weekend, Pinga.

Beloved, how far is your cabin from your home? Is it a long drive?

Seeler, I think it is wonderful that your grandson went to VBS and hung out with you. Those 20 minute drives with him are opportunities to catch up with him. Driving and doing dishes are two of the best places to have conversations that I have found.

Carolla, stories from Israel will be interesting. Enjoy your nibbles and time with friends

KaytheCurler, reminds me of a game we played where we had to pretend we were nesting birds (chose a type), then had to defend against larger birds using strategies used by our bird in real life. we had a great naturalist....thanks for reminding me that birds have various ways of doing things.

mmmmmm....the hotel that i stay in has great tunes in the morning....Playing Cat's in the Cradle, though, not necessarily the best for road-weary travellers. Time to head home today.

For those of you who live in the city, or do long commutes, you will think not very far . . .

Our cabin is a 25-30 minute drive from our community/home. That is why we are able to live here for the summer, because we are not too far away for all the commitments we have in town.

Not very far, but a trip into town can feel like it takes up the whole day. I went into town at 7:30 this morning and got home around 1:30, after doing some errands and some shopping with my daughter.

Mentally, I could see where that's further. I feel that way a bit when I have to go to a bedroom community, especially if it's a place I haven't been. When you're going from cottage life to city, it's a very different feel :)

I forgot about mentioning what's going on with the clinical trial. I posted it in my other thread, but click below if you're interested. I don't know if I'm in or not yet, all what I've been told so far regarding my screening results is that I'm not pregnant :)
Oh, I just realized, I never gave any details about the clinical trial!
It's a double blind, crossover study. They are 3 main periods to it, plus the screening and the exit.
For screening, I had to be off a medication for a while. I was still supposed to treat an attack, but it would mean starting the clock over again. I just put up with it for a while - goes to show I really do need this as often as I take it, as it wasn't even a full week!

There's a run-in period - no treatment. I would only treat attacks (IV). This can actually go on for a while, but based on my history after 2 attacks they would get me into the next phase.
Treatment 1 - I would treat 2x/week subcutaneously. I treat attacks via IV. This treatment could be a placebo or the medication, I wouldn't know. It's about 4 months, but if I have too many attacks within a time frame they move me to the next phase.
Treatment 2, like treatment one but if I had the placebo in 1 I get the real stuff this time, or vice versa. Again, for 4 months, but if I have too many attacks they do the exit earlier.

The medication is in 2 different doses, and I don't know which I would get. I would not get dose A and dose B though - it's one or the other, and I would be in a placebo group for sure, I just don't know if it would be the first or second treatment period.

It's a little scary to think of being off of my medications for so long and only treating attacks. I'm a good candidate though, as I get numerous attacks which they need for the data. Also, since mine aren't the extreme attacks, it's safer for me to do this than some other patients.

Hopefully, it will also mean less IVs, at least for a few months!

I was in Vancouver Thurs. The drive OUT of the City seemed to take forever. My stress was increased. But then I finally was on the highway for the 3+ drive home and all felt well.

You went through multiple cities there, m'dear :3

Sorry for the extreme humidity

yes, Vancouver is designed to be lived in and walked through -- the city planners were concerned aboot the rotting city centre model in the US, so they did what they did...

and i'm so jealous! what are you freezing?
