a place o worship where i volunteer
is trying 4 first time (?)
summer camp
i see they r itemizing even paper clips (so far 4 per child)
today i stopped by to get a drink of cool tasty water

I suppose they will count them at the end and take all the kids for stomach x-rays if they are missing one paper clip? Yeah - sarcastic me. That sounds like way too much work for volunteers to do. If the kids are too young to count their own paper clips they should stay home.

These do come up!

lol
120 paper clips is a LOT
(the adult world is confusing and amusing indeed; i'm just visiting lol)

My goal for VBC is that the kids have fun, and I don't go over my budget by TOO much... Outlined backdrop for skit yesterday, will go in and fill in a bit of colour tomorrow; hope it's cooler.

I'm proud to be a member of our congregation.......

Our minister was overseas for his daughter's wedding in Greece, and so, with no ministers present, the Elders got together and arranged the service.
As I'm doing more of the lay preacher's course this month, I thought it best to allow someone else to do the sermon. Before he left, the minister asked me to attend and give a first-timer some hints and tips for preaching, which I was happy to do.
The woman did an excellent job -especially when you consider that she is Vietnamese -and thus English is a second language for her.
Our minister is a blessing for our congregation - and we were determined not to let him down......

Today’s sermon was by Rev. Sheena. She was speaking on inclusion and how we are all better as part of a whole, rather than as a part by itself. The sermon was based on the scripture reading for the day from 1 Corinthians where Paul speaks of the different parts of the body and how they interact to form a complete body. A fine sermon and one that fits well with core values of Hillhurst.

A sermon by a congregation member on hope ... and the real version of where feelings and thought get mixed up in a world of analysis where all have hope that someone else has figured out what's wrong and thus ... we don;t need thoughts!

Thus the out-of-here attribute of mental functions ... god bless those that carry light while in the dark about normalcy ...

Normal suggest paradigm, average ... and the extremes don't like the middle man ... something more to get over ... perhaps something that will stun the thinking part?

Today the sermon was by the Very Reverend Bill Phipps. He was speaking on the value of being Prophetic and speaking truth to power. He spoke of his work lobbying then Prime Minister Mulroney in the 1980's regarding divestment and sanctions against the Apartheid regime in South Africa and also of showing up at annual meetings of corporations like the TD Bank to get them onside. Eventually the PM and the banks got onside. Desmond Tutu then made a point of attending a General Council meeting in London to thank the United Church for being prophetic and for their role in bringing down the Apartheid regime. Phipps admitted he is a bit of a gloomy prophet very unlike Tutu or the Dalai Lama. He continued that we are all what we are and however we do it, speaking truth to power is essential. Even though Bill has been in ministry for 50 years he is still a fiery and passionate speaker. Glad I was there today.

Today was about kindness, and loving our enemies...remembering, they too are children of God, and about forgiveness breaking the cycle of violence. It started with a puppet show for the kids, about being kind to each other (with a reminder for the kids to remind adults to also be kind to each other  :) ) a film was shown of a woman in Africa, Rwanda I think, who visits prisoners every week (they call her mom), to tell them she loves them, that God loves them...including the man who killed some of her family members.

Today's service was a celebration of General Council 43. We had some highlights of the Opening Worship, including the territorial welcome, and a clip of the wonderful sermon based on hope and faith, using the context of the people of Palestine, by Myriam Spies, bit of cool music, clip of Richard Bott. Last sermon by the rev before September as she heads off to a life heavily centred around her extended family and their cottage until after Labour day... Interestingly enough, I talked to my son before his Sunday service, and he wondered if he'd hear about GC43, or the new Moderator, at all.

Worshiped today at Knox Presbyterian. Rev. Mark Tremblay had as scripture 2 Kings 4: 42-44 and then John 6. He then spoke of how we humans sometimes see life from a perspective of scarcity, but that God as demonstrated in the two scripture readings sees life from a perspective of abundance. When we receive the abundance from God as the folks did with Elisha and later with Jesus we should not hoard the abundance for our group or for ourselves, but we should be as free with sharing the abundance as God was with us. Mark always preaches a well thought out sermon. I had never connected these two similar stories from different times before. If I ever decide to move on from Hillhurst, I think Knox would be a good place to worship. Not often you step into a Presbyterian church with a rainbow flag and a progressive theology.

Mark is an impressive speaker. He has spoken at Evening Grace at Grace Presbyterian as well. Truly one who is full of the Spirit and full of love for all. I attended a memorial service at Knox about 5 years ago for a gay man who was beaten to death in Nova Scotia. Some of his relatives attended Knox. Grace's exploration of becom
ing an inclusive congregation was sidetracked by a 2 to 3 needs assessment and search for several new ministers.

I have been going to Berwick Camp all week, listening to Gary Patterson. Tonight, he spoke about Friday night at General Council , the event that @Carolla posted in her thread about racism in the UCC. The reading was the canaan woman who asks Jesus for mercy and was first dismissed by Jesus not counting her as “ the children”, who then aswered “ even the dog get to eat the crumbs under the table”. Now, Gary said, Jesus was a jerk, who had and did learn to “ unpack his privilege” .
Then he retold the speech of the intercultural observer at GC and how it changed the “ schedule/ procedure” of GC, resulting in all these testemonies.
Used to quaker worship, I find myself having problems switching to the next happy song after a sermon like that.
I did write a little comment about the sermon and a link to WC2 s thread with the video for the Berwick Camp newsletter ( which is published daily), to give people opportunity to watch this themselves and maybe participate in the discussion. I don’t get my hopes up of many people showing up here, after all, its 34 degrees and people at camp are on vacation, but I felt the need to spread information. I added the self description of wondercafe from the “ who we are” page.
I have to say, after Gary spoke about Panentheism in his first sermon, I feel my being on WC for all these years has really kept me in the loop with theological and UCC trends.

Information is a metaphor of data and intelligence ... sometimes representative of the unseen Nous (old word for mind, or psyche). Many authorities do not believe in Nous and only the heartland ... examples can be imagined as I'm not to label them by law of restrictive theology (sacred wisdom as protected) and the tyrants stay on top of this by suppression ... contrary to some weird fly-by-night statements that went something like "teach my children!"

Is that weird or determinate of an unknown god ... a'demos 've things? From there the kettle roils --- Mac Beth! Metaliterature as literary device for the squeeze ...? So many questions ... not for the adulterated ... overmature and stiffed without co operation?

Even gruel needs a spittle ... ago L den staff? The stick Lear... gob onto top end of the stick keep watch for ignorance ... Watchmen ... or visualizations across time ... some mocking man be necessitated ... as others cannot see what is buried in the myth ... the joke Eire?

Tis writ ... rite 've passages? Much to reconsider as it piles up ... information overload? One must work it thro' ... take off fr bits and breaks from reality?

Luce, I have been told by Seeler that you actually speak normally, so somehow your thoughts must go haywire when you try to write. I am sorry that I cannot answer to anything you write, because I cannot follow tour thoughts.

Lovely worship this morning. Led by our Youth Ministries Co-ordinator, also a wind-up to Simcoe Pride, so we had some guests. Jeffrey puts together a very good service and he spoke frankly about where we need to take "affirming" from here. I was on sound today, so a bit busy. There's always a wrinkle to every service when it comes to sound and projection. Today, it was carefully "muting" Jeffrey during the hymns; he has a fine speaking voice, but challenged when it comes to singing.
