Covid 19 Vaccine

Yes, very true about AstraZeneca. Another complication was that the Pfizer vaccine was initially being manufactured in Europe only and at one point the EU stopped exporting it. They resumed after a few weeks, but it put us behind.

BC is now giving second doses at about 8 weeks. Big improvement.
Yes indeed. They must have managed to get more vaccine from somewhere. I think I read that a suitable lab for vaccine manufacture is under construction in Canada. It should be up an working by next year. I have read that a third dose next year might be required. So we may be ready for that.

I heard that we used to have a lab producing vaccine and doing research. A political group (I will not name them) decided it wasn't needed and shut it down.
I will happily name them. The Progressive Conservative party under Brian Mulroney. Specifically they sold Connaught Laboratories to Institut Merieux who moved the production arm out of Canada. There's still a research facility here, apparently.

There have been numerous learnings re what is the best timeline between doses as well as which vaccines are best, and whether mixing is ok or even better.

I'm actually rather thrilled with our vaccination numbers. They are doing great. The amount of vaccines being delivered is better case than was previously floated and much better than some of the nay-sayers were predicting.

In Ontario, our 7day average continues to decrease with very low numbers.
ICU utilization is also down.
Things are looking good. Keep those vaccines going into arms.

Yep, the lockdown and vaccinations seem to be doing the trick. Hoping we will see the second shots moved up but in the end, mine is booked so I at least know when I am getting it if they are not. We are talking about going to the cottage. My aunt and uncle still live there but are over 80 so hopefully can get their number two done before we are likely to go. I haven't seen them in a couple years between missing Christmas in 2019 (family trip) and then the pandemic.

It's looking good, but I think we also need to factor in that we are dealing with "outdoor activities" and a summery climate. It went down last year during the summertime even without the vaccines.
For me anyway, the real test for vaccines will be the fall and winter.

I think we really need to find out where Covid came from...... finding the origins will help alot too IMO. If it's from an animal, could we just vaccinate the animals or "cull" them?

Waterfall, are you truly suggesting that you would vaccinate all bats and pigs in any location , and if so, against ? what?....and who would pay?

Nope, I'm brainstorming.......don't you think it would be good to find the cause too because possibly vaccines aren't the total answer?

Things were going down here even when we had snow, no lockdown needed! Hopefully things will be better in MB soon, we may be taking some ICU patients from them.

Here the funny thing is the hospitalizations didn't seem to lag as much as we've seen in the past with the case numbers.

Possibly a scenario experienced during the Spanish Flu? After 4 waves, it came to an end without vaccines and developed into the various Flus we know today.....but also after many deaths in the world.

We didn't do a lockdown for any wave here.

I agree about finding the origin of Covid19 ~ will be critical to slow down/stop future pandemics

@ChemGal most individuals and i think news agencies are referring to these restrictions as lock down. It sounds like you are using a much more restrictive definition.

Nova Scotia is opening up some, outdoors patios are allowed- with distancing. Drove through nearby University town Wolfville yesterday- line ups to get it- the tables barely distanced ( they are just squished on the sidewalk, so to have enough income to be worthwhile, I suppose they did their best), the line up - no distancing, wrapping around the patio tables on the “ inside”, definitely not enough distance between the people in line and the people at the tables. We are lucky we haven’t had too many cases in our area, but watching this, I am not going to join in.
NS had close to 60% of the population vaccinated once. But- not so much the younger generations.
