Covid 19 Vaccine

I worry about all the people who won’t get vaccinated. Will these people end up being like those communities who don’t vaccinate their kids and then have outbreaks of measles? Will they continue to creat havoc for everyone?

sort of along this line, The Star had a long article today about a man confined to high security hospital from a NCR verdict. By description he sounds delusional. He sounds dangerous. He is ill. He doesn’t believe he is ill because he is delusional. He has appealed his case but that won’t be heard for several months. So the court was asked to force him now to take his antipsychotic meds, against his will

forcing medication in anyone is a big deal. In this case they did.
but it brings up the idea of forcing people to be vaccinated. Health workers, regular citizens......... and that goes against our rights under the charter

but will thee unvaccinated people keep us all in danger?

Depends how many there really are. I mean, the hardcore anti-vaxxers won't get done but they are also fairly small percentage-wise. The concern was more about people who weren't anti-vax, but just anxious, raising that number. And those can be convinced and apparently are coming round, at least in some jurisdictions.

I think over time more will change their mind too, ie. some who could have had it now and haven't may get it in the summer when they see more people around them who have been vaccinated.

I am in BC, as is my sister.

My sister and her husband go for the vaccine Tuesday, April 6. They go ahead of me despite being a bit younger. The BC government classified them as vulnerable. My sister takes some wicked drugs for her rheumatoid arthritis and her husband has diabetes.

I should be able to book an appointment fairly soon. I’ll just keep checking the site. Despite being 69, I’m not considered super high risk.

Canada is getting a “third wave” apparently, driven by variants. I never go out, I get everything delivered.

We are far behind the UK and US in vaccinations, as we are totally dependent on imports.

Pfizer is made in Belgium and at one point the EU told them to stop exporting due to the need in the EU itself. This was partly responsible for the delay in Canada. However the most recent news from the EU:

- they promise not to block further exports to Canada, but....
- they are badly feuding amongst themselves with some countries now buying the Chinese or Russian vaccine.

Someone I only know only online lives in New York City (she is a bit younger than me). She started a blog and invited me to comment. She was hesitant about the vaccine. I told her I was not hesitant at all but outlined the supply problems in Canada.

After reading my comments she changed her mind and booked an appointment. I await further blog entries. I hope she goes through. NYC was so badly hit in earlier waves I don’t think they will get another wave.

I don't normally share others writings , but, thought I would share this doctor's writing, as I think reading her posts has been helpful to me.
She gives hope based on evidence.

Her name is Dr. Anne-Marie Zajdlik, and her facebook is : Anne-Marie Zajdlik

I think surviving the next several months will be all about balance: balancing chronic stress with healthy eating, regular sleep, daily exercise and daily safe connections with other people.....along with positive thoughts and practising gratitude and for me, on my knees in prayer. Why? Because believe it or not, in the next several months, WE will have control of the virus, not the other way around. By the end of June, there will be enough vaccines for all of us. This is way ahead of the original predictions of September as the date by which all of us would be offered a vaccine.
As of today, 6,518,600 doses have been given in Canada. That's translates into 15.2 % of the the Canadian population that have received at least one dose. This is a good link to follow Canada's progress:
More than 2.5 million people in Ontario have received a vaccine which is almost 20 % of the population!! Check out this link to follow the vaccination progress in this province:
Canada is set to receive 1,019,070 doses of the Pfizer vaccine and 855,600 doses of the Moderna vaccine in the next week along with 500,000 of the AstraZeneca vaccine. That's almost 2.2 million million doses following a peak of more than 3 million doses last week.
We expected 6 million doses in the first three months of 2021. We received 9.5 million. In the next three months, Canada is set to receive one million doses of the Pfizer vaccine every week until the end of May when the supply will ramp up to two million a week in June.
By Canada day, Canada is set to receive 44 million doses of the Pfizer, Moderna and AstraZeneca vaccines.
The infrastructure is here. The mass vaccination clinics are ready as are many pharmacies and doctors offices.
So breathe.
We've got this.
The variants will not take control if we stay the course but right now, "Younger Canadians are getting sick, really sick."
People in their 20's and 30's are on life support and if they survive, many will end up with longterm debilitating symptoms.
In Ontario, nearly 500 people are in the ICU and 210 admitted in the last week were under the age of 50.
The P1 variant ( the Brazil variant) which is spreading on the west coast is even more transmissible with a higher risk of serious illness than the B.1.1.7 variant that now makes up the majority of new cases in Ontario. BUT the vaccines are still effective at neutralizing this virus's ability to cause severe illness.
Here is what happens when we get to 50 % of the population vaccinated. My son lives in San Francisco. He received his second dose of the Pfizer vaccine last week. California has reached a 50 % vaccination rate and is expected to reach 75 % by May. They are planning on hosting concerts and live events this summer open to people who have been vaccinated. We'll talk about the ongoing debate of proof of vaccination in another post. That's a contentious issue.
The UK was devastated by the the B.1.1.7 variant. Now after a remarkable mass vaccination campaign, London a city of 9 million individuals, has had no deaths for two days in the past week, and today, after a 4 month lockdown, the country has made plans to start reopening. That's us in two months. Two months.
We know what we need to do and we have proven that we can do it. Wear a surgical level 2 mask or a good quality three-layer cloth mask with a layer of polypropylene at all times when you are in public. Be careful on those trails. If people are close to you, put the mask on. Avoid absolutely any gathering inside. I am not going to specify this. We know this recommendation well. Households members only inside.....PERIOD. I would avoid gathering outside right now. I went for a beautiful walk with a close friend today. We stayed six feet apart and we wore masks.
Just to be safe, put that mask on.
Enjoy the sun, the dawn of spring, the greening of nature. Focus on the good, stay in the moment, practise gratitude and acknowledge that you have the inner strength and resilience to persist for just a bit longer. And if you or someone you know is struggling, please reach out.
Tomorrow night is our 9th Finding the Balance during COVID-19 webinar. Our guest is our medical officer of health, Dr. Nicola Mercer. This event will calm your soul and reassure you that everything is going to be alright.

My next post will discuss conspiracy theories, our greatest threat to conquering COVID-19. Vaccines are safe and effective. Please question anyone who is suggesting otherwise.

She is optimistic that all the vaccines will arrive. Past history doesn’t really support that idea. But let’s hope

the concern I have read from several epidemiologists is that by only giving one dose, because we dont have enough, we are encouraging mutations.

it’s like thinking of penicillin. If you are prescribed antibiotics, you are always told to take all of them, even when you feel better. But over the years antibiotics were over prescribed and people didn’t do that. So we needed different antibiotics as the bacteria mutated and adapted. Bacteria adapted because we did a poor job of taking antibiotics. And bacteria are not as fast changing as viruses. And penicillin has become slightly useless.

so yes, doses are arriving. And we need to stop doing age down vaccinations and start doing people who leave the home for work and who ride transit. But we also need more doses, a massive campaign to get everyone done with the required two doses before we add to the mutations

And thats what I was wondering up thread, do we know if the vaccines can cause mutations? Is there an answer for that question?

I believe you only need 1 dose if you had Covid, whether asymptomatic or not because you will already have antibodies. Problem is how many are testing for antibodies before getting the vaccine. If you had asymptomatic Covid you wouldnt even know you had it.

I think all viruses mutate - that's their essential survival mechanism. My guess would be that vaccines create fewer and fewer hospitable environments for there to be sufficient viral load to permit mutations in quantity - but I'm definitely NOT a virologist! I guess in my simplistic mind it's kind of a process of vaccine eliminating 'food sources', thus causing a species to weaken and diminish in numbers.

Official birthdates go into 40s although it seems very sporadic who manages to get them if younger. Quite a few on Facebook younger than that have managed to get in.

It's complex.
Vaccines are different than antibiotics in that it's resulting in a mixture that inactivates the virus, not just 1 or 2 things. The vaccines being used focus on a part of the virus, not the whole thing, but we produce a whole bunch of different antibodies that recognize that part, and when exposed to the real virus we can still make antibodies that recognize other parts too.

It's not really about changing the environment as hospitable or not on a small scale, ie. if it gets to a cell, it will replicate, antibodies don't interfere with what happens in a cell.

If a virus mutates and the antibodies we have don't recognize the mutation - the virus within the body without the mutation won't replicate, while the virus with will. So it's just a matter of whether nor not antibodies are formed that do work against the mutation before it infects someone else.

Get the doses to the provinces on time so appointments don't have to be cancelled. Utilization is quite good, that lead to things being slower. The federal responsibilities need to meet properly first.

And the opposite problem is happening in Ontario. We have supply in excess of demand because of the half-assed, screwed-up vaccine 'rollout' spearheaded by DoFo and his band of clowns. Their latest obsession is counting the number of people in each age group who HAVEN'T been vaccinated, instead of keeping the rollout smooth and steady and just opening to more groups earlier.

Well our region doesn't have enough to give out. Clinic is running at part capacity, and people aren't being given dates to book, yet there are theoretically 1.5 million vaccines ontario has but hasn't distributed.

Hard to know who to believe

What I admit is refreshing is that our PM is committed to not bashing the provinces; his words are "how can we help?". I like that.
