Covid 19 Vaccine

As not much has changed within hospitals in terms of protocols, the reports attribute the rise to increased community transmission. Sigh.

To which I can attest. COVID screening at door, fresh masks donned. All staff in PPE. Strict visiting limits; at least they've relaxed the palliative rules - a little.

I'm a little slow in seeing this news. Great that you were able to get another booster ChemGal. In yesterday's newspaper I read a long article re sharp rise in infection rates since the lifting of masking & capacity limits this month in Ontario. This was based on waste-water testing & on rate of health care providers testing positive. As not much has changed within hospitals in terms of protocols, the reports attribute the rise to increased community transmission. Sigh.
Yeah, I do watch the wastewater data here but unfortunately there's a pretty big delay just in dates, and who knows what the delay is in terms of when transmission occurs.
Locally, it's been steady. Calgary has had an increase, they also dropped masking sooner.

Chemguy went out for a birthday yesterday, including to an arcade. Very few masked. They did leave when it started to get busy. He'll test in a few days but we're also hoping masking & vaccines will keep us ok. We also aren't seeking out risky places, but he has sacrificed a lot of socializing for my sake so for now I give him the go ahead when he's invited..

I watched the BC briefing today. I've been frustrated around the messaging around clinically vulnerable people. Six months ago they were saying we'd get a third dose then a booster. Lately I've heard Dr H say they were reviewing the literature/data around that. WTF. Today I learned that someone I know who is CEV just got his invite for his booster. Dr H said we could expect to start getting our invites soon. That was a relief.

Too many people think the third dose and booster are the same. I don't think that is entirely because of the messaging. Some of it is related to the way people tend to process information. Lord knows we've gotten a lot of new info in the past couple years.

I don't really understand the need for the invitations for boosters. Vaccines aren't in short supply in Canada, a lot have actually expired before they could be used. Last primary dose + 5 or 6 months should be easy enough to manage with vaccine records.

The data they kept pushing here in late Dec/Jan was that for Omicron a booster was really needed for protection. It would be nice to know if they would just share information they refer to. If general population needs a booster, it would be safe to assume those who are immunocompromised need it too IMO.

Ontario just announced it is opening up fourth shots/second boosters to 60+. However the article also points out the Israeli study that shows benefits of a fourth are short-lived for general population. So not sure I'll bother even if they lower the age (I'm not 60 yet).

That is just how BC has done it. You can chose the method to receive the invite. I get mine by text. I can't remember the other options. I believe text is probably the most common

Will get it when the eligibility period is met i.e. 5 months after third shot

I might play with the timing a bit depending on what the 2nd booster eligibility is/what's happening.
There's a good chance it would happen beginning of April. Pushing that back a month-ish may make sense for me.
I'm just thinking of how waves tend to be affected with school, cooler temps, Thanksgiving/Halloween and then winter temps and Christmas.

I wasn't happy how the 5ht wave was done. Healthy people had their boosters pushed up from 6 months down to only 5. Why? Because Omicron was showing that extra dose was needed. The information was clearly stated, but I think it was a combo of needing an actual booster due to waning immunity but I think there was also the factor of really a primary series 3rd dose type of effect too. Since 3 doses for immunocompromised was considered equivalent to 2 doses for those who are healthy, I think that 4th dose should have had a shorter timeframe for the immunocompromised too. Throw in mistakes with low doses and it seems really ridiculous that most of us who were eligible only were after the 5th wave was pretty much over. With the Omicron waves, someone like Northwind should have had access to the booster if wanted IMO.

From the article posted, going form 3.9/100k to 1.5/100k for that 4th dose is a pretty big effect. If it doesn't last all that long, here getting that 4th dose now may not be all that helpful (depending on what's really going on with the covid numbers), but having had access to it in Jan, or for Sept, etc. really can. Both on an individual levels plus for things like the population in general and the healthcare system. I would have to look at the paper more carefully too, but it sounds like the 4th dose may have a fairly long term effect? It's just for what was originally being looked at when the vaccines were developed - severe outcomes. Preventing infection entirely is what's stated to be short term.

Something in general I want to see and there's not much for good data - long term effects from COVID and how preventative vaccines are. Especially as we do see pretty series long term effects even when the COVID itself was mild. Things like diabetes developing, heart damage, etc.

Alberta has opened up 4th doses to anyone who needs them for travel. Nuvaxovid is also available starting on Tuesday.

I just got the invite for my booster shot last night. I booked the appointment today. I could have gotten the shot right away. I decided to wait until the 18th because of the meds I'm on. I've had three full doses because I'm clinically vulnerable.

My sister-in-law and brother-in-law got their 4th today. Both have health concerns, and are over 60.
I'm sure we will do it, just not sure timing -- lol everything in our life is pre- or post- wedding right now.
Plus my husband turns 70 at the end of the month.

My sense is we may try to get a shot this weekend, just due to the increased social interactions that we are having and the prevalence of covid right now.

Q: Who is eligible for additional doses for travel?

A: Albertans may be eligible for up to two additional doses of COVID-19 vaccine to meet international travel requirements. Albertans need to research and understand which COVID-19 vaccines are accepted at their destination. Health Link staff is unable to provide travel destination requirements. No proof of travel is required for booking an appointment nor are there restrictions on type of trave
