Novel Coronavirus

And on the lighter, yet still serious side, a Belgium mans answer on how he protects himself against COVID. Interesting that he has put the same ingredients in his mask that doctors put in those long beaked masks during the Spanish Flu pandemic:

NS covid numbers are climbing up now well over 200, with 60 some on each of the last three days. A party of students with 22 attending, breaking the rule of 5 people in and outdoors, got a fine of $1000 each. Then the group posted a pic with a group photo of them holding their ticket, #worth it. That caused the Provincial government to increase the fine on the next day to $2000 per person (;in the future). Consequences for the students from the university are still being discussed.
Five people are in hospital, one of the two in ICU is a person in his twenties.

There are words for this that I shall refrain from using on WC2. I saw this in the news earlier and, yeah,.

In happier news, a new announcement from our medical officer suggests that I should be in line for a shot from the health unit shortly. There's two ways I can get in and he suggested that at least one of the two (he's not sure which one) should open up this week. Of course, I then have to book and God knows how far ahead they are booking right now.

Restrictions were loosened today. Indoor gatherings are allowed in long term care facilities and visitors increased to 4 per resident. They will also now have same rules for outdoor gatherings up to 10.

So people cannot visit in homes but they can in long term care :cautious:

Apparently spread is mostly occurring from social gatherings that aren't allowed plus household transmission. I don't see this step encouraging people to follow the rules more than what has happened the last few months.

The ruling is that they can designate up to 4 people as visitors. That is wonderful. LTC's have no longer become the major risk due to vaccination. They paid a terrible price due to isolation and lack of family support. The LTC's will not be reducing their vigiliance. This will mean though that the staff will get some welcome assistance from family.

It's not just that, it's indoor gatherings as well.

If law breakers really are the ones responsible for spread, I think that's going to create more of it too.

I'm not against the LTC changes themselves, but not happy with the update today.
They really aren't doing enough with where things are at right now. LTC facilities already were working with the province on adjusting the rules there as they saw was reasonable. Increasing support persons to 4, not a problem. Making the announcement with the vaccine update about they are allowed to have indoor gatherings - that's an issue. I bet due to that there will be many more people who have had 1 dose socializing indoors illegally, as well as those who aren't vaccinated increasing doing so too.

Things are a little different with a population where the majority have had 2 doses and better monitoring occurring.

I also think vaccines will help, but I don't think cases will be totally controlled by this summer, and this isn't setting up well for that if I'm correct.

Adding on to my comments about Wood Buffalo and why sending extra vaccine there makes sense:
The RMWB continues to have the highest COVID-19 spread per capita in Alberta, numbering 1300.9 per 100,000 people.

There are 17 outbreaks in the RMWB, with 12 at oilsands sites or camps. Alberta Health confirmed in a Monday email these outbreaks have had 2,159 people test positive for COVID-19, with 2,054 people working in the oilsands.

Important to note that the 1300 figure doesn't include those who do not live there, so many of those in camp worksites - their numbers actually belong to elsewhere in AB or elsewhere in Canada. So the per capita rate of people in the area is likely higher than people who live in the area. To give a comparison - Calgary is ~500/100k, Yesterday numbers AB 454/100k, ON 275/100K. So 1300 plus then factor in the worksites on top - really high rates.

I can't think of a region in Canada that would have so many non-residents there, especially from across Canada and not just the same province/adjacent provinces.

Update:

Tuesday, the active case rate for Wood Buffalo grew to more than 1,472 cases per 100,000 people, up from 1300 cases on Monday.
According to Alberta Health, CNRL, Suncor and Syncrude all have outbreaks of more than 400 COVID-19 cases. According to Adam, Syncrude sent around 500 workers home on Monday.

One of these companies wanted to do an update meeting in person - Chemguy would normally travel for that, stay in a hotel. Not to that area specifically, but still, I'm happy he will be doing it online.

They are starting to do company specific clinics in the Toronto area. The situation is definitely dire in Alberta. And yet the resistance to safety measures hasn’t stopped. That is unbelievable

Cargill did get the Moderna clinic. I think Wood Buffalo needs to do camps and considering numbers, out of province workers etc. The federal government should step in or at least offer the vaccines as extra to the 'per capita ' low levels we get here.

*sigh* "New" restrictions - grades 7-12 are switching to online in areas with high rates, which is already happening. This may just extend that. Gyms will be totally closed too.

If very high, the next thing they may do - curfews if municipalities want it. I still don't get the curfew thing. Patios are ok, so lets have everyone cramming in during shorter hours. No info as to what the curfews would include (yet, I'm catching up). Hopefully our mayor is smarter than that.

I think they're worried about the virus covering longer distances while airborne than they thought and hanging in the air for longer periods.

These covid variants seem to be acting like the highly transmissible measles virus. While adults will likely get 'herd immunity', the vaccines do not block transmission of the virus. I worry about those under 18 yrs. who have at this point no protection from the covid virus.
