There was an interesting column the other day about Ontario. Basically saying, they attempted to do all the things the science advisory panel wanted. and That they wanted the federal sick benefit to improve. Which it didn’t in the budget. The column also noted that only PEI and I think BC have provincially mandated sick time

until the federal government gets vaccines here, we are sitting ducks for variants and will have long term restrictions.
I wonder how many summer camps will close this year forever.
I've been reading how some stores (eg. Sobys and Loblaws) are offering sick pay to their employees, even though it isn't mandated by the gov't yet. Good on them. Hopefully the gov't gets on board.

Oh yes, definitely the courts sided with RIDE. But I think one of the reasons was it wasn’t a discretionary stop. It was every car driving down the road. That makes it equitable

here in the country I have been stopped at 2p.m. A couple of times. The first time, when I was asked if I had anything to drink today, I laughed. Also here they will set up stops at intersections of various highways. And then another one three miles down the road at the next concession. To catch people who try to drive around the first one

but I I Toronto it was always night stops

We are drifting a bit, but I will add that I only got stopped once at RIDE check. Ironically, I had driven my little brother to a party and was heading home. I've never been much of a drinker myself.

The point is, anti mask crowds could be challenged successfully if it can be proven masks saves lives.....the problem is...could it be proven successfully? We take it for granted but what would the courts need for evidence?

I think the issue for police is the size of the rally. If ten people are congregating in a park, against rules, it is easy to break it up and give out tickets. Several hundred is a different story. No one wants to create a riot from a protest and that is the risk if you try to break up a massive number of people

no One wants to be locked down. And so we get the provinces trying to control people while not stopping people from doing things they want to do. Doctors say don’t let people congregate. But people say tough, I can do what I want.

BC is trying to stop people from leaving their area. Ontario trying to do the same but it is just a request. They aren’t going to stop you .
the federal sick pay is clumsy. It could easily have been changed. companies continue to pay you and they apply for 5he sick reimbursement pay. Easy peasy. No idea why they didn’t

I personally think that the feds are quite content to let all the provincial governments struggle with this issue. They don’t have enough vaccines for their residents so they have to get tougher and tougher with rules. That everyone just ignores. While the feds just keep smiling, sending out Cheques and saying everything is all good. What did Justin say last week? He wouldn’t have done anything different

his best line is of course. we have the toughest border restrictions in the world. What planet does he live on. They messed up vaccines. They messed up the border. And here we sit. Waiting for September. When maybe most of us will be vaccinated

Picture from the beaches in Israel ( screen shot German news). Israel is back to normal. 80% or more of population is fully vaccinated and they all have a “passport”. With that, they can go to night clubs and everywhere. Weekly incidents rate is 11. They have found some Indian variants, but do not worry and haven’t had any new flare up. Lets hope they are right.

Funny. I thought RIDE was country wide. its a drunk driving policing initiative. Police set up road blocks, anywhere they choose. They stop each car, ask you a question or two. If they have any doubts, they can demand a breathalyzer test. Catch quite a few over the limit people each time they set up road blocks, particularly during holiday stops

Perhaps they use other names in other jurisdictions? I mean, Quebec no doubt has some French name for it but maybe other English-speaking jurisdictions have other names as well? Though I thought I had seen RIDE used in national and US sources as well as Ontario.

Back on COVID, the Church of God in Aylmer was at it again this weekend. Packed service, no masks or distancing. Three charged but without looking I am not sure who. Probably the pastor (who is building a quite charge sheet) and his son (ditto), who have been behind most of the drama in Aylmer.

And a golf course opened in TIllsonburg. Took some fairly reasonable precautions like spacing out tee times and having security screening people at the gate to make sure they had a tee time booked but still illegal. No word yet on any police action on that one.

RIDE is only Ontario. I'm drawing a blank on what they're called in BC and Alberta right now. BC might be CounterAttack.

I believe they are also partnered with MADD.

My daughter text me yesterday to send me a picture of 600 people showing up in Stratford yesterday to protest the lockdowns.
She believes many were from out of town.
It was the largest anti lockdown in Ontario thus far organized by "No More Lockdowns Canada" and independant MPP Randy Hillier
MP Derek Sloan spoke at the event.

I am frustrated by the protests. I believe people have a right to protest. But what exactly is their problem. They don’t like masks. They don’t. Want to have to keep distance. They want to go to church......... honestly. People are ill and dying and you don’t want to were a mask. Give your head a shake

i get the frustration businesses have. And I know some friends of my sons who have had to lose their restaurant. I wonder if my hair stylist will survive.

interesting comment on Pearson airport today. It is part of Mississauga , even though we all think of it as the Toronto airport. And Peel, Mississauga, Brampton are all instituting business closures if five Covid cases in the previous two weeks. Everyone was happy and seemed to be a good idea

so Pearson has several cases a day that arrive each and every day. That should mean Pearson has to shutdown. But of course it won’t because it is federal. Just a mess all around

We have check stops not sure of any specific program name.

ETA literally just checkstop program
Road blocks here refer to something different as well, literally a closed road ie. Construction

RIDE sort of gives the suggestion to me of a program like operation red nose - a service to help with getting home safely.

I heard that Hillier had already been charged at one in Peterborough. Is he doing a tour of protests or something?

As for "Mad Max" Bernier, this is one more reason I want to see the People's Party flame out asap. They are a bit of a menace if they get a toehold somewhere.
