I missed church today, but tonight I went to see a local folk-rock band play at a community hall (it’s a club of die hard old “folkies” that rents the hall and hosts bands, as well a open mic for the first hour, every Sunday night - and has done so for about 30+ years), with a friend from church. A young woman she knew from her old church (I gathered) was there with her husband, whose dad plays mandolin in the band (and he’s a fantastic player, and funny). So it was quite a bit like church because of the friendly, familiar atmosphere and hall venue - old hippy church, lol. It’s great entertainment for $7 for non-members (up from $6 since last year).
My mom’s good friends have actually been active with it for many years, ever since I was a teenager, so I’ve been before several times. They try to get a range of musicians booked that appeal to different ages and tastes. Tonight’s feature band reminded me of a mix between bluegrass, vintage Spirit of the West mariner-folk, and Hootie and the Blowfish (lead singer’s voice was similar). It was fun.
