How was church today?

Welcome to Wondercafe2!

A community where we discuss, share, and have some fun together. Join today and become a part of it!

We had a good service yesterday. Most of the songs we'd sung with our home church. The pastor gave a solid message based on the temptation of Christ in the wilderness. Afterwords, we had a nice snack, sermon review, ministry discussion and prayer time. The church is organizing itself for 2019 and thinking of introducing such things as a children's ministry, young adults' ministry, couples' ministry, etc. Also after service, the pastor invited me to preach at the Thanksgiving service on November 18.

Service was very spring like (after the Noah like downpour yesterday and then tremendous blow). Leaves underfoot. Made it to the bottle depot and did my duty. A lady whose mothe had died was getting rid of her stuff from the garage and I asked if I could go through these gems; Byte magazine. Mac magazine. Oh the feathered hair and horn rimmed glasses!

The holy sky putting on a show as our Earth rotates so that the sun gets lower and lower in the sky, splashing His orange marmalade on the underside of clouds.

Hints of rain.

Today's worship was nice and relaxing.

Saunteringly sacred,
Inannawhimsey

Meeting today was very intense- started off with thoughts about Rememberence day and the Quakers call to peace action, testimonies about active healing work for traumatized people, work with youth, and later at lunch the question came up what trauma is and why trauma not neccessarily leads to addiction or other damage (with personal stories of participants.)

You just made me think of a crack troop of Christians who run around* or have a kind of Healing Centre where people with wounds (physical spiritual emotional psychical etc) can come in and be healed by laying on of hands

* can u just imagine Canadians going around to give out free healing hugs or walking up to people "can I touch you?"

Hail Mary,

Today Rev. Don McLeod was again preaching from a passage in the Gospel of Thomas. The disciples were asking Jesus about the "end times" and he told them to go back to their beginnings if they wanted to see their ending. The idea of the circle of life, but also the idea that dogma we pick up along the life journey needs to be discarded if we are to find our true selves. It reminded me of something our former minister Rev. Karen Holmes said once in a sermon, "that just because something isn't factual doesn't mean it isn't true." Folks who get wrapped up in the dogma of a virgin birth or a physical resurrection may be missing the underlying truths that exist in such stories. Was also communion Sunday and the mystery of communion is always compelling.

As in the begging thought was blown away by an instants of passion ... much like church yesterday ... blown away by excessive winds ... and still this morning some 10's thousands in Fredericton are out of power ... thus hummeled down!

As part of todayz Worship
I visited a 7 11
picked up a homemade mocha (English Toffee and Dark Roast) from a machine that snorts like a dragon (I've been burned once on my hand)
I gave a review of some Nasi Goering instant noodles to a cashier that it was spicy like it said on the tin
I said it was a 6 or so out of 10
He replied that since he was Brown, for him it would b a 3
We all laughed
It is now 36F and I still am wearing shortsleeves and shorts...I'm hanging on for as long as possible lol

Life is good,

I should probably not attend church around Remembrance Day. I did enjoy the closing hymn though, "Make Me A Channel Of Your Peace." I do tend to remember folks I have known and respected through the years and I appreciate their service. Thankfully this year there were no bagpipes in the service, but there was a trumpeter doing "Revelie and Last Post." I guess these services just don't resonate with me. Church, of course, isn't all about me so if some found comfort it would have been a good service for them. And, there's always next week....:)

Worship service today was followed by pot luck and a presentation of two friends about climate change and their decision to become vegan. Very interesting. Methane gas from animal production has several times more damaging effect that CO2.( I did not remember the numbers, but I think it was 10 times). There had convincing arguments, basically saying that by becoming vegan they reduced their carbon footprint to 55%.

I skipped church this morning. As it is Remembrance Day, there is a road closure between my home & the church to accommodate the veterans as they march from the Legion hall on one side of the river to the Cenotaph on the other side of the river ... so it means a very long detour for me if I wish to get to the church. So I stayed home, baked my bread, and had a lovely day.

I missed church today, but tonight I went to see a local folk-rock band play at a community hall (it’s a club of die hard old “folkies” that rents the hall and hosts bands, as well a open mic for the first hour, every Sunday night - and has done so for about 30+ years), with a friend from church. A young woman she knew from her old church (I gathered) was there with her husband, whose dad plays mandolin in the band (and he’s a fantastic player, and funny). So it was quite a bit like church because of the friendly, familiar atmosphere and hall venue - old hippy church, lol. It’s great entertainment for $7 for non-members (up from $6 since last year).

My mom’s good friends have actually been active with it for many years, ever since I was a teenager, so I’ve been before several times. They try to get a range of musicians booked that appeal to different ages and tastes. Tonight’s feature band reminded me of a mix between bluegrass, vintage Spirit of the West mariner-folk, and Hootie and the Blowfish (lead singer’s voice was similar). It was fun.

Remembrance Day Service always initiates as sense in me of ... "why Lord?"

Many do not ask this as it appears they gain from the chaos of conflict, aggression and extraction ... through which much is denied to the alternate ... that's life! We search for knowledge about resolution ... but W/O balance! Thus no reconciliation ...

Agitation must continue ... thus messy pools and muddied wat Urs ... WAT is an eastern expression we don't understand either! Resembles a picture word of hieroglyph ... thus glycosides to amuse implicites (buried pearls of wisdom as pix)!

I missed church today because I never attend the Remembrance Day service. The McCrae poem makes me nauseous. The presence of the flag in the sanctuary strikes me as inappropriate. My father was a WW2 vet who survived the war, having signed up in '39 at age 17. He served in Italy, India and North Africa as a translator with the Indian Army. I have some very particular memories associated with 'his' war that I don't share, I don't want to share, and he sure as hell figured out that he wasn't fighting for what he thought he was fighting for. He was an atheist born in a metaphorical foxhole, and I never once blamed him for it.

It strikes me as inappropriate as well. I think patriotism has no place in the church (which I see as being a visible manifestation of the kingdom of God).

We don't usually have a flag in the sanctuary (well, we do, but it's in the "props room" at the back with the rest of the off-season banners/tablecloths, etc.) Comes out for Remembrance Day, and I think we drag it out for Baden-Powell Sunday as well.

I think there's a whole thread on this issue somewhere...

Then there's the red flag thing and that Mary Theo Rah on free volition ... but not applied to sex slavery ... the father's still sell it!

The 2 congregations I serve suspended their services so they could join the community "service" at the Centre with the Legion. (Not my decision; they do the same whenever Nov. 11 falls on a Sunday). I realize that it's the 100th anniversary and all that, but IMHO if we could learn the lessons from the events of the era, rather than just 'honoring the sacrifice and service of so many' we might be further ahead. But then maybe I'm just cynical. Or unpatriotic. Or mayhap both.

Learning would be new and creative rather than non-creation ... destructive as there are no means and mediums allowed in the sandwich space! Dr. Scott Speck expounded on such stuff! Yet some would say there is no thing like psyche ... and thus growing mindlessness! Kajlil Gibran (I think) said "close your eyes and look around and you'll see me" ... a mystical vision ... fantasy honoured?

These things appear in the dark lady's embrace whether the Gods wish it ornaught!

Don't worry, you're not the only one, Red. I'm rather of the same mindset. Sure, we should mourn the loss of so many youth, but we should also look at the real causes of those wars and make sure we can avoid repeat performances.
