How was church today?

Isn't it wonderful when you can feel the congregational response while you are speaking?!

Depends on the response.:)

I agree in general, though. I hate it when they just sit there and you don't know if they are deep in thought or politely waiting for you to finish so they can yawn during the scramble to start the next hymn.

I just checked Wilmot Church website. The podcast of the worship service is already there. This is the first time I heard myself. The little rural churches I usually supply in don't have podcasts.

Question about manners/ protocol:

For the past few weeks the two main pastors have been putting out invitations to book a time to meet for coffee for a one one on chat with either of them. They do not have the use of the building all the time so people can't as easily drop in.

I already met and have sort of befriended one of them before I understood her role with the church. We're meeting again soon.

I met with the lead pastor yesterday, at a restaurant. I was going to just get coffee, but he ordered a large soup and I decided I'd get a snack. We talked for about an hour and a half about life and theology and how this church came to be. The waitress brought our bill split between our portions. We talked some more. The bill sat there. I had to use the lou, so it was a good time to leave and I said, "Do you mind if we split the bill?"
He said, "Okay. I think I have some cash in my wallet." Or something like that. He gave me $10 which was enough for his order without a tip. I then paid the whole bill and tip with my debit card. I walked away wondering if I was supposed to buy him lunch. This is a small non-denominational (at the moment using the hall of the Lutheran church). They're not a wealthy church. I don't know how his salary is worked out. So, I feel, in retrospect, I should've bought lunch because he gave his time and I feel guilty. I can't really afford it - money is tight this month - but maybe it's customary with this church to honour the pastor that way. It hadn't crossed my mind before I got there. Am I overthinking it? Should I have bought lunch? Was I rude?

You should not have been presumed to purchase his lunch --- unless, when you said , hey instead of meeting at the church, how about we meet at the coffee place at lunchtime, and even then, unless you were explicit, i dont think there is an expectation for you to buy his lunch.
There was never an option to meet at the church. The ministers had announced at the end of church the past few weeks "If anyone wants to meet for coffee, let us know after church/ send us an email." Just a way to stay in touch with individuals/ a get to know you. I went up and asked about coffee. He said, "Sure. How's your time on Wed? ... Why don't we meet at _ restaurant (it's a little coffee shop diner a couple of blocks from the church) at such and such a time?"

Sorry, Kimmio, I think it is outrageous that he put you in such a spot. If they can't

afford to pay their ministerial staff why do they have two staff? I am very leary of this.

It's okay. I was feeling bad so I sent an email yesterday afternoon saying, "I'm thinking I should've bought your lunch. My apologies. Next time?" and JUST NOW (esp or is he on WC2? Lol) he sent me an email saying "Don't be silly. You should not have bought my lunch. It was nice to get to know you a bit and I'm glad you're part of our community..."

They're a small independent congregation of about 100 ppl. I think there's a lot of volunteering of time and one of them has a hobby farm with her husband. They raise chickens, sell organic produce.

YJNK's church is absolutely wonderful. Beautiful old 1912 Presbyterian building with stained glass windows. Gorgeous pipe organ; would have been nice to hear it. Definitely a feeling of sorrow in the congregation over the second pastor's absence. But good honest spirits, a varied congregation - in age, culture, economic status. Nice flow to the service. Message as a conversation between Rev Dr John and his weekend recovery poet was very successful, and the one-minute exercise of writing very moving. Music was good - all More Voices, except for a sung Ps 23 and the Lord's Prayer from VU, special music was a lovely duet of a Leonard Cohen poem/song. Great bulletin. Lots of small group stuff going on. It's a sign that I've been moved in a service when I feel comfortable enough to cry, and I did, which was awesome. Also very nice having a coffee with YJNK before service.

Just had the time to listen to your sermon. You are a fine speaker and the ideas were interesting too. I'm with you and Bill Phipps on the tax thing as well. And yes a good choice for the hymn after your message and sounds like a nice pipe organ you folks have at Wilmot.

Was unable to attend church today because of illness (flu). May watch a service of a different church later today via Facebook or YouTube.

Read the Great Command from Matthew ... a great illustration of how the Sadducees (orals) separated their stuff from the Pharisees (as law) and after they all feared to question the lighted character of God about any more ... thus the Dark Ages fell along with plague e&c sometime writ as ET as including the sum of what we don't know that is beyond us in God's wisdom ... for it would blow our fixed minds as institutionalized! Tis a huge field ... adding the ambers an to it ... with variants to be dissonance to those kohl and settled as purple Wahls ... spouts of whetted tongues?
