For whosoever shall keep the whole law and yet offend on one point, he is guilty of all.
ASV
For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet stumble in one point, he is become guilty of all.
AMP
For whoever keeps the whole Law but stumbles in one point, he has become guilty of [breaking] all of it.
AMPC
For whosoever keeps the Law [as a] whole but stumbles and offends in one [single instance] has become guilty of [breaking] all of it.

Hi,
Here is the thing ---the first call is to Love the Lord your God first ---that is God's conditional command -----that is required ---if you Fail to Love God First then you Fail the 2nd Command --Love your neighbour automatically -----
And if you fail to love your neighbour then you fail the first commandment. If we give a cup of water to a stranger met along our way it is an act of service to God in the way of Jesus.

Here is what unbelievers need to get ----the law is still in place for unbelievers and they are required to keep the laws to get a Blessing from God ---which no man can keep ---the Curse is in place still for unbelievers ------The only way to change that is to receive Jesus as your Lord and Saviour then and only then are you free from the Law -----you than are under The New Covenant of Grace and under the Blessing ------No one can Claim to be under the New Covenant of Grace unless they receive Jesus into their heart -----

So if you fail one Law you fail them all -------

verses 9-10 from Scripture below --------tells us this -----

9 For example, a person must realize
that those laws are not intended for people who have God’s approval. Laws are intended for lawbreakers and rebels, for ungodly people and sinners, for those who think nothing is holy or sacred, for those who kill their fathers, their mothers, or other people.

10 Laws are intended for people involved in sexual sins, for homosexuals, for kidnappers, for liars, for those who lie when they take an oath, and for whatever else is against accurate teachings

1 Timothy 1:3-11 GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)

A Warning about False Teachers

3 When I was going to the province of Macedonia, I encouraged you to stay in the city of Ephesus. That way you could order certain people to stop teaching false doctrine 4 and occupying themselves with myths and endless genealogies. These myths and genealogies raise a lot of questions rather than promoting God’s plan, which centers in faith.

5 My goal in giving you this order is for love to flow from a pure heart, from a clear conscience, and from a sincere faith. 6 Some people have left these qualities behind and have turned to useless discussions. 7 They want to be experts in Moses’ Teachings. However, they don’t understand what they’re talking about or the things about which they speak so confidently.

8 We know that the laws in Moses’ Teachings are good if they are used as they were intended to be used. 9 For example, a person must realize that those laws are not intended for people who have God’s approval. Laws are intended for lawbreakers and rebels, for ungodly people and sinners, for those who think nothing is holy or sacred, for those who kill their fathers, their mothers, or other people. 10 Laws are intended for people involved in sexual sins, for homosexuals, for kidnappers, for liars, for those who lie when they take an oath, and for whatever else is against accurate teachings. 11 Moses’ Teachings were intended to be used in agreement with the Good News that contains the glory of the blessed God. I was entrusted with that Good News.

He's referencing this:

Bible Gateway passage: Matthew 25:31-46 - New International Version

Specifically:

37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’

40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

Which would, indeed, seem to build a relationship between loving God and loving your neighbour.

Here is another point of view:

“Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen.”

I am thinking of the unclean Samaritan who did what Jesus calls us to do. To intercede remedially in the healing and restoration of our alienated and wounded human being. And of course the two religious persons who ignored their fellow human being suffering in the ditch come to mind. Like Lazarus by the rich man’s gate.

God gave Moses words to speak. God gave Elijah words to speak. God gave the apostle words to speak. And these are the words God has given me to speak.

When I was thirsty, you gave me nothing to drink.43 When I had no place to stay, you did not welcome me into your home. When I was without clothes, you gave me nothing to wear. When I was sick and in prison, you did not care for me.’

44 “Then those people will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty? When did we see you without a place to stay? Or when did we see you without clothes or sick or in prison? When did we see any of this and not help you?’

45 “The king will answer, ‘The truth is, anything you refused to do for any of my people here, you refused to do for me.’

Matthew 25:31-46 (GW)
Jesus Will Judge the World
31 “When the Son of Man comes in his glory and all his angels are with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. 32 The people of every nation will be gathered in front of him. He will separate them as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 He will put the sheep on his right but the goats on his left.

34 “Then the king will say to those on his right, ‘Come, my Father has blessed you! Inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the creation of the world. 35 I was hungry, and you gave me something to eat. I was thirsty, and you gave me something to drink. I was a stranger, and you took me into your home. 36 I needed clothes, and you gave me something to wear. I was sick, and you took care of me. I was in prison, and you visited me.’

37 “Then the people who have God’s approval will reply to him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you or see you thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you as a stranger and take you into our homes or see you in need of clothes and give you something to wear? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’

40 “The king will answer them, ‘I can guarantee this truth: Whatever you did for one of my brothers or sisters, no matter how unimportant they seemed, you did for me.’

41 “Then the king will say to those on his left, ‘Get away from me! God has cursed you! Go into everlasting fire that was prepared for the devil and his angels! 42 I was hungry, and you gave me nothing to eat. I was thirsty, and you gave me nothing to drink. 43 I was a stranger, and you didn’t take me into your homes. I needed clothes, and you didn’t give me anything to wear. I was sick and in prison, and you didn’t take care of me.’

44 “They, too, will ask, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or as a stranger or in need of clothes or sick or in prison and didn’t help you?’

45 “He will answer them, ‘I can guarantee this truth: Whatever you failed to do for one of my brothers or sisters, no matter how unimportant they seemed, you failed to do for me.’

46 “These people will go away into eternal punishment, but those with God’s approval will go into eternal life.”

46 “Then these evil people will go away to be punished forever. But the godly people will go and enjoy eternal life.”

The word Christian literally means "similar to Christ." At its most basic the only way anyone can earn the comparison is for them to resemble Christ to an observer in some way. And from there the challenge is all to the observer and what they think Jesus was like. So there are a lot of possibilities of who can wear the title and who shouldn't.

PilgrimsProgress said:
Can you be a Christian if you see Jesus as a prophet worth following in the way you wish to live out your life?

Is it necessary to believe that Jesus was divine?

Can you be a Christian if you don't believe Jesus died for your sins?

Can you be a Christian if you don't believe in a physical resurrection, but see resurrection as a metaphor for being born again to a life following the way of Jesus?

Possibly. Though I would hope that most comparisons are made based on what Jesus did rather than what Jesus believed. Particularly if those beliefs do not translate into how Jesus acted.

I believe Jesus qualifies as a prophet. So what?
I believe Jesus died for my sins (and not mine alone). So what?
I believe in a physical resurrection. So what?

I could understand all mystery and know all things. If I had no love what would be the point?

Jesus is known for being loving, patient, gracious and just. I would hope that Christians would be known for being the same.

That might be a fond hope or too high an expectation for some. Which probably means I wouldn't be in a hurry to descibe such people as Christian. If others see differently then I'm not going to argue.

1 John 4 (GW)

Test People Who Say They Have God’s Spirit

4 Dear friends, don’t believe all people who say that they have the Spirit. Instead, test them. See whether the spirit they have is from God, because there are many false prophets in the world. 2 This is how you can recognize God’s Spirit: Every person who declares that Jesus Christ has come as a human has the Spirit that is from God. 3 But every person who doesn’t declare that Jesus Christ has come as a human has a spirit that isn’t from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist that you have heard is coming. That spirit is already in the world.

4 Dear children, you belong to God. So you have won the victory over these people, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. 5 These people belong to the world. That’s why they speak the thoughts of the world, and the world listens to them. 6 We belong to God. The person who knows God listens to us. Whoever doesn’t belong to God doesn’t listen to us. That’s how we can tell the Spirit of truth from the spirit of lies.

God’s Love Lives in His People

7 Dear friends, we must love each other because love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born from God and knows God. 8 The person who doesn’t love doesn’t know God, because God is love. 9 God has shown us his love by sending his only Son into the world so that we could have life through him. 10 This is love: not that we have loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the payment for our sins. 11 Dear friends, if this is the way God loved us, we must also love each other. 12 No one has ever seen God. If we love each other, God lives in us, and his love is perfected in us. 13 We know that we live in him and he lives in us because he has given us his Spirit.

14 We have seen and testify to the fact that the Father sent his Son as the Savior of the world. 15 God lives in those who declare that Jesus is the Son of God, and they live in God. 16 We have known and believed that God loves us. God is love. Those who live in God’s love live in God, and God lives in them.

17 God’s love has reached its goal in us. So we look ahead with confidence to the day of judgment. While we are in this world, we are exactly like him with regard to love. 18 No fear exists where his love is. Rather, perfect love gets rid of fear, because fear involves punishment. The person who lives in fear doesn’t have perfect love.

19 We love because God loved us first. 20 Whoever says, “I love God,” but hates another believer is a liar. People who don’t love other believers, whom they have seen, can’t love God, whom they have not seen. 21 Christ has given us this commandment: The person who loves God must also love other believers.

Here’s some more text that doesn’t say anything about loving only believers. In fact, the story shows that Jesus did not want people to just love “their own tribe”.
Luke 10:25-37 New Living Translation (NLT)
The Most Important Commandment
25 One day an expert in religious law stood up to test Jesus by asking him this question: “Teacher, what should I do to inherit eternal life?”

26 Jesus replied, “What does the law of Moses say? How do you read it?”

27 The man answered, “‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your strength, and all your mind.’ And, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’”

28 “Right!” Jesus told him. “Do this and you will live!”

29 The man wanted to justify his actions, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”

Parable of the Good Samaritan
30 Jesus replied with a story: “A Jewish man was traveling from Jerusalem down to Jericho, and he was attacked by bandits. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him up, and left him half dead beside the road.

31 “By chance a priest came along. But when he saw the man lying there, he crossed to the other side of the road and passed him by. 32 A Temple assistant walked over and looked at him lying there, but he also passed by on the other side.

33 “Then a despised Samaritan came along, and when he saw the man, he felt compassion for him. 34 Going over to him, the Samaritan soothed his wounds with olive oil and wine and bandaged them. Then he put the man on his own donkey and took him to an inn, where he took care of him. 35 The next day he handed the innkeeper two silver coins, telling him, ‘Take care of this man. If his bill runs higher than this, I’ll pay you the next time I’m here.’

36 “Now which of these three would you say was a neighbor to the man who was attacked by bandits?” Jesus asked.

37 The man replied, “The one who showed him mercy.”

Then Jesus said, “Yes, now go and do the same.”

Kimmio ------You Are taking the Word out of Context and using this Parable to suit your own wants ----

36 “Now which of these three would you say was a neighbor to the man who was attacked by bandits?” Jesus asked.
37 The man replied, “The one who showed him mercy.”
Then Jesus said, “Yes, now go and do the same.”

This word Mercy here is referring to this -------1656 éleos (translating OT 2617 /kataisxýnō, "covenant-loyalty, covenant-love" in the OT-LXX over 170 times) – properly, "mercy" as it is defined by loyalty to God's covenant.

unsafe says --------So what Jesus is saying in this Parable is that this man needs to go and be loyal to God's Covenant like the Samaritan was so He could serve his neighbour through true Compassion which comes by way of the Holy Spirit through a relationship with God and keeping His Covenant ---The other 2 Jews had human compassion and when the neighbour needed help they allowed their humanist nature to dominate ---they only loved God with his lips not the heart --------fear kept them from helping their neighbour ----- they crossed the road -------

unsafe says -----
The 1st Command and GREATEST is to love the lord your God with all your heart --soul and mind ------ ---the 2nd command is to love your neighbour -----You can say what you like but unbelievers are still under the Law and unbelievers are away from God that is why they are called unbelievers cause they are Sinners and Sin separates you from God ---Period --an unbeliever is not going to Love God first ----Agape comes from having a relationship with God and breaths true Compassion which will make the person move to help his follow man ---it is generated by Love from God Not ourselves

Understanding The Meaning Of The Love Of God
Understanding The Meaning Of The Love Of God
Love is God
Love is obedience to God
Love is as defined in 1 Corinthians 13:4-8
Love of God is attainable

Love of God is attainable --------Understanding the meaning of God’s love makes it easy for you apply.

Love is shed by the Holy Spirit in your heart (Romans 5:5) and not in your head, so allow your heart to lead you and not your head.

When you decide to walk in love and seek the help of God, the grace to walk in it is released to you. You will grow in it as you practice it. And if you miss it, don’t be discouraged, repent and go on.

Love is obedience to God --------If you have the love of God operating your life, you will obey His words, (John 14:15-30).
He who does not love God will not obey His commands.
Many people know what God’s word says concerning many issues but the question is “how good are they in keeping them?”

I think the parable illustrates that the first two men were not, themselves, compassionate, even though they were of the same religion as the disciples hearing the story. The Samaritan illustrates that even someone hated by the dominant religious groups and ranks, in the area at the time, was actually more compassionate. The act of being compassionate toward an unlikely neighbour is in and of itself an act of loving God as well. Jesus was clearly illustrating that in that parable. 'Tis you who are twisting it to suit your purposes.

Agreed.

I believe Jesus qualifies as a prophet. So what?
I believe Jesus died for my sins (and not mine alone). So what?
I believe in a physical resurrection. So what?

I'm somewhat mystified by your use of "So what?"
Are you implying that it doesn't matter?

Jesus is known for being loving, patient, gracious and just. I would hope that Christians would be known for being the same.

Agreed.

By the way, I just want everyone on Wondercafe2 to know that I have achieved a personal milestone - i.e. I have answered revjohn in multiple quotes in one answer!!! ;)

46 “These people will go away into eternal punishment, but those with God’s approval will go into eternal life.”

46 “Then these evil people will go away to be punished forever. But the godly people will go and enjoy eternal life.”

Unsafe, who - with your views or mine - do you think will be "punished forever" and who will "go and enjoy eternal life?"

I don't know, but I rather think that a God of love would allow both of us to enjoy eternal life (if it proves to exist) because a punishing God is not a loving God. (Hey, I can go along with a time out for poor behaviour, but for eternity???)

Which means that the same theological debates will be continued in the next world..........:(

Unsafe, I believe you are the one taking scripture out of context. The parable of the sheep and the goats says nothing about the sheep choosing to love God -- you inserted that interpretation. In the parable they were loving, they embodied the spirit of Jesus in their living. I worry that you seem to need to be confident that some people will be excluded from God's love. Please read the parables from Luke about the lost coin, the lost sheep, and the lost son. They point to One who seeks to include everyone. It is a poor use of our God-given time to think about who will be excluded from God's love. It is a much better use of our God-given time to help others feel included in God's love by our acts of love for them. Jesus said, "It is by their fruit that they shall be known," or words to that effect. Please choose to be fruitful.

Kimmio ----your quote------ I think the view you have chosen to accept and promote (but you could change course), has given the world excuses not to love one another. Which reflects a cruel world.

Kimmio ---We humans deserve God's wrath not His Love -------He sent His only Son to take everything we deserve on Him so we could escape the tortured He endured ----- We ourselves don't deserve Love from God -----What God did for us is Love -----what Jesus said on the Cross to His Father is Love ----Father forgive them for they know not what they do ------that is the real love that we are suppose to show our neighbour --that is Agape ------

There are many who Satan has had fun with keeping their heads buried in the sand keeping them from God's Truth -----deceiving them ---so stay deceived if you want to ------this is what unbelievers and False Christians do when scripture is revealed to them ----
