What Do You Have For Thanksgiving Meal?

Seeler, sorry to hear your oven is out. Like I said, I do turkey breasts in the slow cooker. If you have a BBQ, that could also help you out.

Is your daughter married? If so, I missed that post!

Put chickens in the crock pots. Then cook potatoes and veggies on stove.

Turkey I expect would be too big for crock pot

I cooked gravy, stuffing, and veggies on the stove. We bought cooked chicken and pie, and frozen iced cream from our grocer.

My menu is changing by the moment and right now it's not looking very traditional. I've got a nice pork loin roast, so I'll do that and a huge pan of my famous caramelized onion/goat cheese scalloped potatoes. And a big pot of beans, and my friend is bringing a crunchy pink salad that she makes, and my ex-mother-in-law is bringing a pie, not pumpkin, because I'm making one of those. I think there will be 10-12 of us, an assortment of family, in-laws and outlaws and friends, and maybe a few too many for my little dollhouse... And some bread; will have to make and/or buy some bread before Saturday (which is 'my' day to host it in a complicated multi-family formula...)

Two repair men arrived within a half hour of each other Monday. The first to arrive was the one Seelerman called on Friday, having given up on the company he called several weeks ago. Estimate for repairs was around $300 with the replacement part to arrive within five days to two weeks (depending on whether it is available in Canada or has to be ordered from the States -- grrrr).
The second to arrive said that he saw the other guy's truck pulling away and appologized for being so late.

So I'd say that the probability that I will have an oven by Thanksgiving is near zero.

I haven't heard from Seelergirl about her plans. If she doesn't invite us, we will probably go out for dinner. If she does, we will probably have dinner on Monday when she has the kids (they will have Sunday dinner with their father and probably his parents).

When do you have Thanksgiving dinner - Sunday or Monday?

Usually Sunday. I do hope you'll be able to have some kind of Thanksgiving dinner Seeler. Do have a microwave?

Just got invited to Seelergirl's place for Thanksgiving on Monday when the kids will be with her. Quick meal--they are moving at the end of the month and will be very busy. But the usual turkey dinner. We have to talk more about who is bringing what.

This year I am cooking:

turkey
homemade dressing
potatoes
gravy
carrots
turnip
buns
cranberry sauce - whole - canned
bean salad
pistachio salad
bought pumpkin pie with cool whip

(I bought a can of pumpkin that has no additives, so I will have some pumpkin with some cooled, whipped, concentrated canned coconut milk with vanilla while everyone else has pumpkin).
(my hubby is going to get me some coconut milk ice-cream too!)

today we dug out carrots & beets from my SILs garden
cleaned & washed them & found some extra protein in them
tomorrow some 16 people will be coming by for the backyard eating around a campfire -- fall here is GORGEOUS -- total LGBTTSQwithasideofmayo nature, flaunting it all out. and the backyard is fun -- thickets upon thickets upon Blair Witch Project thickets with WildLife

not celebrating canadian thanksgiving, just having dinner, but i'm considering this to be in place of Canadian tanksgiving -- as i'm currently in Freeville, New York state

When my Gran was still alive and there were a dozen (or more) people for the meal:

Turkey
Stuffing w/ sage and onion (home made, cooked inside the bird the way they try to tell people not to do these days ... I don't listen)
Ham
Mashed potatoes
Mashed rutabaga
Steamed Carrots w/ brown sugar glaze
Peas
Noodles (home made) with browned butter
Green salad
Coleslaw
Baked yam - mashed w/ butter and brown sugar
Gravy
Buns (home made, usually brown and white)
Cranberry sauce
Dill pickles, sweet pickles and beet pickles (all home made)

Peach pie
Apple pie
Pumpkin pie

I may actually be forgetting a few things, my Grandmother's holiday meals were epic.

This year for just me and my husband I made: Roast chicken, Stuffing, Noodles w/ browned butter, Mashed yam, Baked acorn squash, Broccoli w/ cheese sauce and green salad. I had home-made dills which I forgot to set out.

What's with the noodles? When did noodles ever become a Thanksgiving tradition??

Turkey, potatoes, gravy, homemade cranberry sauce, gravy, stuffing, yams, brussel sprouts baked with maple syrup, and pumpkin pies with whipped cream. 2 of my guests brought some of the food. Yum!!

There are two types of traditions: the community ones that are widely shared and family ones that pass down within specific families. Perhaps this is one of the latter.

Yes, I imagine so! It just doesn't make any sense is all. Noodles!

We always had two types of stuffing when I was growing up: bread and onion and sage in the body cavity of the turkey, and sausage in the neck.

If yesterday was the day for Thanksgiving meal we and a pair of friends had smokies, bread and our individual choices in condiments, with an assortment of finger veggies. Dessert was toast and homemade strawberry jam. Tea followed the food which was all cooked over a one burner camp stove. Before and after the meal we walked in the forest. During the day we saw a baby bear, a coyote and a fox plus lots of animal tracks - bear, deer, elk, moose, wolf, coyote and rabbit. The day was delightfully bright and sunny without being unpleasantly hot.
