thinking of everyone in the west who are coping with flooding ... and those in the east coping with hurricane Arthur ...

It's been a wicked summer for weather, that's for sure. Two employees of my employer's Barrie location took damage in the Angus tornado. The company is contributing towards their insurance deductibles and inviting other employees to help out as well. This is one of the reasons I am still with the company - their really is some genuine concern with, and recognition of, the needs and problems of staff. We aren't just cogs in the machine.

On my own front, mixed quiet. The lesions, rash, whatever the hell they are on my arms appear to be confounding the pathologists examining the biopsies. Two biopsies, neither conclusive though both leaning to a form of psoriasis. That's not what I went in expecting (given family history, I was expecting something else) and I'm not sure if that means they are wrong or my family history is wrong. Back to the dermatologist in August but I think it's got her stumped, too, and a second opinion could take 6+ months. We have a severe shortage of dermatologists in London so getting in to see one for anything short of obvious skin cancer takes months.

My diabetes has been flaky recently, too. High readings at bedtime (before evening snack) but otherwise largely staying in the controlled range. Need to research that a bit to see if I need to adjust something somewhere in my eating and activities.

Dad's eightieth birthday looms. We're having a party next week at a cousin's house (it's my uncle's eightieth, too). I'm thinking he won't see ninety or if he does, he won't know it. Dementia seems to be progressing fairly slowly so hopefully he can hang on until we get a decent longterm care facility lined up. The melanoma that was removed had only spread a little and the oncologist he saw (I drove him for that appointment) says his family doc and surgeon did the right thing - got rid of it and nearby lymph nodes - and recommended monitoring for now. That's given his age and condition. If he was younger and healthier, she said she might have tried some chemo but felt it might do more harm than good for him.

I'm in a spiritual holding pattern for now. I'm still working on committees at my UU fellowship but still unsure whether I'm staying for the long haul. I am doing a service this summer but after that, I'm largely free of worship commitments and the other committee I'm on is finished by October. We shall see where things stand in the fall.

ouch Mendalla - rashes are no fun - and tough to diagnose. There seem to be more and more types of psoriasis, eczema etc. out there these days. Hopefully you will find an answer soon. Sometimes food sensitivity comes out that way too. Hope the blood sugars settle too! I'm amazed by the complexity of managing diabetes today ... so many considerations & calculations!

Good morning Roomies!

July 7th, 2014 . . . 07/07/2104 . . . there's got to be something amazing about this date -

2-7's in it

2 x 7 = 14 (2014)

Anything unique about this day or date for you?

For me . . .

  • we are having some construction going on here today - a facelift on deck and some new stairs built for it - just awaiting the arrival of the contractor.
  • I know someone who is celebrating their 91st birthday today.
  • Adult child returns to work after a week of vacation.

I think that is it.

Whatever this day is for you, may there be some brightness in your life and a bit of spring in your step.

I stubbed both my biggest toes coming upstairs from the laundry room this morning. There won't be any spring in my step today. :(

But I spent a beautiful, mosquito-free day in my favourite National Park yesterday and I'm looking forward to taking my parents to visit there in a few weeks when they come to visit from ON.

I had another good appointment. I think we've got this figured out. I have 2 booked, if they go well then I can stop going in for a while, until I want to learn another area.

Have you ever read the kids' book "Oh No, George!"? I first picked it up when it was suggested to me to help lead Children's Time around the time of Jesus' temptation in the desert. It quickly became a favourite and now I think about it whenever anyone uses the expression "oh no!"

@Seeler how are things going over there? I haven't been watching the news much to hear about the hurricane. Hopefully all is well out your way! If we don't hear from you soon we might need to send out a search party :)

Yes, hopefully seeler is okay . . . maybe without power (cause haven't seen her here in the room recently - that is always cause to worry). Take care and be safe, seeler.

I may have discovered a new allergy - tested negative twice now. That, or I reacted to something else. Maybe I'll be the reason for a food recall. I called the phone number on the product and I'm getting them to confirm whether or not there may be traces of fish, there were only 2 ingredients on the label, no traces mentioned.

Sorry to hear that chemgal. Glad things are going better with the injections.

Just realized I hadn't read this thread for a little while. I got side tracked on the wonderbus thread and on the yacht with the mararitas. ;) I kind of got the two threads mixed up in my mind.

I heard back from the US food company - no fish is processed in the facility used for the crab I had. Waiting to hear back from my allergist's nurse. I'm ok with not eating crab (although along with the remaining container, we also just bought a cheese & crab dip that I was planning on snacking on as we have a big bag of fresh broccoli florets), I already don't eat shrimp, but I was eating lobster well before my allergist told me to go ahead and eat fish. I'll miss the lobster if I have to avoid the crustaceans too :( I think there's also a slighter risk with the other shellfish - muscles, clams, etc. Caesars will be missed as well if that's an issue. The bigger thing is just knowing - it's difficult to avoid allergens when you don't know what yours are! I don't know why my body isn't reacting to the tests properly.

At least this reaction was mild, but I think I kind of brushed off some really minor fish reactions before it started to get a little scary.

Good news is that a food recall probably isn't needed - no one should be having a bad fish allergic reaction due to the crab.
