Room For All

Welcome to Wondercafe2!

A community where we discuss, share, and have some fun together. Join today and become a part of it!

Compared to the original WC we seem to have less moderation here. Or it is less visible at any rate.

This was one of our goals. The admins and mods largely agreed that save for spam and actual, outright personal attacks and hate speech, we would tread lightly.

Does that encourage less Reporting, I wonder?

It might, but that just helps us with having a board where only the most egregious offences require full mod action.

On my other board, the forum mods spend an irritating amount of time refereeing interpersonal drama that blows up on the forums. We've had to suspend accounts just to defuse schoolyard crap that would never even happen on WC2. Here, I find that the drama generally either fizzles out quickly or can be defused by a simple post.

We have a Report button. I'm second in Likes, and first in Reports. I'm probably more proud of the latter.

(Strange - I got an alert that you had replied to one of my posts - and when I clicked on the link it brought me here.)

I clicked "Reply"on your creationist post, then thought better of it and deleted the content before actually posting the above comment. Somehow, the software must have logged that I clicked on your post, even after I deleted the quote.

I rarely even think of posting "Like" here, but I do it fairly often on FB.

Today hasn't been one of my best. Did some volunteering this morning that had me wading through snow drifts to get to the houses and I got snow in my boots! Very chilly feet by the time I got home. Then I learned that a friend received a medical appointment in the city - finally. I had offered my partner and I to accompany her because she can't go alone and doesn't have a family member able to take her. None of us thought that her appointment would be for 8 am -which means we need to pick her up at 4 am. Makes me wonder what some people use for brains. Surely they could have scheduled patients who live in the city to take the earliest appointments? At the funeral later in the day I really thought the minister was working himself up to do an Altar Call.

Mutter, mutter, grumble, grumble...............

Kay, I think sometimes folks also need to phone and express concern and ask for accomodation. My Dad had surgery booked, it was first thing in the morning, which meant a very early start for me to get me ready, go get him in time for adjustment,s and then take him. I expressed my challenge with the time. He phoned. They readily moved it. All it took was him saying, is there a chance that you could......

I'm enjoying having a night of wondercafe, relaxing, watching tv, making tea, doing laundry, and just general ....deep sighs.
Thankful for the warmth of the house, for power that stays on.

Anyone see that the Economist put out their list of best cities to live in in the world, and Toronto was #1, then Montreal was #2.

Basically I agree with you Pinga (about appointments). That is what I would do but the patient isn't going to do that - and would think I was interfering if I did it myself. She is old, in a fair bit of pain and therefore 'tetchy'. I've noticed that some people are quite intimidated by the health care system (and before that the education system). We will just do what needs to be done and hope she doesn't need another ride to the city in the near future.

Understood Kay, it can be a fine line to walk.

On an interesting note, received an email addressing a rumour that the church that I attended is on the market for sale. The message was that it wasn't on the market; however, a congregation is interested in putting their three churches together in the city in a downtown church and is looking at ours as a good choice.

It cracks me up in a way, we have 5 united churches in our city and no one ones to give them up, yet, they have 3 and want to amalgamate to one.

This is the congregation that has been using our building for events and I have a problem with their theology. Life has interesting moments.

I've been saying that Toronto is #1 for years now - on the original WC - and here at WC2. I've taken a lot of flack for it too. http://www.blogto.com/city/2015/01/toronto_ranked_the_best_city_to_live_in_the_world/

Oh gosh Kay - that's a tough day. Hopefully you can cozy up this evening and let that day flow by you, as water in the stream - hmmm ... bad analogy perhaps in the northern Canadian winter weather! Think summer! Springtime rivulets & waterfalls ... warm sunshine ...

I guess I have sunshine on my mind - our neighbours came for supper tonight & they've just returned from 10 days in sunny Jamaica ... feeling all relaxed & rejuvenated with lots of funny stories to tell. Nice to have a little get together on a 'work night' :-) Now I just have to remember to get up for work tomorrow - no, it's not quite the weekend yet!

I agree with sometimes the system just not thinking though. I remember having the first appointment time for the day. I was told to be there early. When I showed up, they weren't open. Some of the people in the same area had day surgery, and they all had to be processed first. I could have easily had an extra hour of sleep - it wasn't something I had thought to ask as I thought it was safe to assume when they gave me the info as to when to be there they would know when they could get me signed in.

Yeah - the things in this world that have got big enough to be called 'systems' seem to lose all knowledge of their purpose sometimes. Basically I think health care is in place to serve patients - but often they don't do that very well.

This evening I spent some time on the WiiFit. Not sure what it was thinking because it told me I weighed 1978 lbs. Must be time to do some serious dieting, I guess. First though I'm going to bed conjure up some dreams of a peaceful lake in the evening light, calling loons and gently lapping wavelets. Might even throw in a few distant shouts of happy children playing 'fetch' with their great big dog.

Good night all.

Medical appointments at inconvenient times - I recently received a notice that my next fasting blood test would be at 10:30 on a Wednesday morning. Wednesday is the day I volunteer at the church. And I usually have breakfast by 6:30 am - I would be starving if I fasted until 10:30 am.
So I phoned to have it changed. And while glancing at my calendar I noticed that Seelerman had a blood test scheduled for 8:00 am Friday.
So I was bold enough to ask if we could both come in together. No problem.
I don't have anything scheduled on Friday; I could fast until 8:00 am without undue hunger; we could go out for breakfast afterwards, and we would only have to pay for hospital parking once.
It never hurts to ask.
Both our routine tests came back showing acceptable to good levels of sugar, cholesterol, good fats, bad fats, thyroid, etc.

Yay for your test results!

I'm glad they could be accomodating. I tried this approach with my Aunt recently - she is having cataract surgery, is 90 and usually gets up at 9. She is so very worried/anxious about having an early morning appointment (plans on staying up all night because she is worried that she will sleep in) so I asked if we could ask for a later appointment (it's more than six weeks away) and was told they don't take requests that diabetics are done first and then the elderly (so she'll be one of the first). Maybe it's an eye thing because we ran into similar problems with my Uncle's eye surgeon. That said, I have done it with some of my doctors with success.

I don't think there is a lab in Ottawa where we can book blood tests - ppl keep telling me about this possibility but I can't find one in Ottawa. It's not a big deal anymore because I don't work so it's just an annoyance but the place near me the line starts about 5:30-6 and it opens at 7 and it's nothing to wait two or more hours. The only reason it's annoying for me is that the longer I wait in the waitingroom the more my anxiety increases which makes it harder for them to find the darn vein.

You get to books yours? We just show up at the lab with the requisition and take a number. If you time it right, you're in and out. If you time it wrong, make sure you have a book to read. I usually go first thing on Saturday morning (they open early and close at noon) and I've gone from no wait at all to two hours. Still haven't figured why it varies so much.

No, we don't get to book our blood tests. Our doctor sends a request to the hospital and 'central scheduling' sends us a notice. That's how my original appointment got scheduled on a day and at a time that was not good for me. At the bottom of the notice there is a phone number to call if you cannot keep the appointment. I simply phoned that number and got my appointment changed.

I have a blood test a couple of times a year when one of my doctors requests it. Due to the possible side-effects of a medication Seelerman takes, he has a blood test every three months. His doctor sends in an annual request and he gets notices from 'central scheduling' during that period.

In addition to the hospital clinic, where blood tests are covered by Medicare, we also have a private clinic.

Waiting time for an appointment at the hospital clinic is often a month or so (unless the doctor designates it as urgent). And waiting time for an appointment scheduled for 8:00 might be an hour - they use a number system.

If you choose to go to the private clinic, you get a prescription from your doctor and take it to the clinic on a day and time convenient to you. No waiting for an appointment, and usually little or no waiting time at the clinic. Cost -$10.

I seldom go to the private clinic. I believe that medical care should be available to everyone and while a $10 charge isn't a deterant for most people it is for those living on Assistance or Old Age Security. I believe that private clinics undermine Medicare. I have no good reason for jumping the line and getting my blood test ahead of someone who can't afford to pay.

Interesting differences. Here we have a private clinic too, it's free though. The forms are from them, and only have their addresses I believe. You make your own appointment, and can do it online or call the number. That's the lab (any of their locations) my hematologist didn't trust though, and I think they did screw up the test once as the value was much lower than the other 3 times. They also take walkins, but in the morning you'll usually have to wait a while as that's their busy time due to the fasting tests. I have walked in for a fasting test in the morning, but not for one where you don't need to fast. I've had issues where a location wouldn't do a test, central booking said they did do it and it was a bit of a mess as something was also time dependent after I had taken a bunch of pills the night before specific to the test and had a two hour window. I think that time, I needed to get the tests split into three, one done privately in the window period when I showed up, then one at the hospital that had to be done the same day, and then a fasting one even thought the form didn't ask for a fast.

The hospital lab is walk in only. It used to be a long wait, but I think in patient samples were sent there too. Since they opened up the clinic across the street that's all out patient there is next to no wait for the out patient lab. Unfortunately, at the hospital there is no free parking, and the private labs usually do. If you get through quickly enough though, you don't have to pay and they usually are that fast, even in the morning. I don't know if people just don't know about it, or why they aren't very busy.

In the news a while ago it was mentioned the private company's contract wasn't being renewed. I think another company was likely going to take over. The current company was going to try to fight that, not sure what's going on now though.

It adds up in a year when doctors are trying to come up with a diagnosis. Some years, that probably would have been $100 for me, if I only went to a private clinic.

In our area, hospital labs pretty much only do tests for hospital patients, inpatient and outpatient. For routine, non-hospital stuff like my diabetic bloodwork, you use a private lab which is, as I noted, walk-in. There is no fee here as along as the tests involved are covered by OHIP (some are not, usually ones that are not deemed medically necessary, but nothing I get done regularly falls under that). In some cases, the hospitals are partnering with the private lab companies for some of their testing work. The private labs here are mostly part of chains (Lifelabs and Gamma Dynacare being two big ones). The lab I prefer is the main centre for Gamma in this area.
