Thank you Bette for getting this organized. I could use a pick-me-up.
It seems spring is finally here. Shirt-sleeve weather two days this past week. And the snow is melting fast.
Actually too fast! The river rose dramatically yesterday. We went across to the north-side for bowling at 12:30 with water lapping at the sides of the riverfront streets. Coming home at 3:00 - slowly as we zigzagged around avoiding hastily put up barriers to keep us off flooded streets throughout the downtown. We expect bad flooding the next few days.
Keep in mind that I live on a hill, as does Seelergirl. Our church is downtown but far enough back that it was not effected during the last bad flood - an extra foot or two would have made a difference. People are keeping watch.
My these snacks are good.
I was wondering about you getting wet feet this weekend, Seeler, after hearing the warnings on the news.
Kind of drizzely in Nova Scotia ,too. My walking group is doing a 10 km walk along the Kentville ravine, new walk for me, and as long as it isn‘t pouring, I am in.

Just learned that my former neighbour has been found dead- she was something like the Canadian grandmother to my son, he was four whenwe moved across the street and she had no kids of her own. Her friend called me whenshe couldn’t get ahold of her and we decided she call another friend and neighbour to check on her. She must have found her. She was 65. They just had canceled her total knee replacement two weeks ago, because her health wasn’t good enough and was sent to see another specialist first.
Her dream was to get her new knee to be able to walk and then get another little dog (she had to put her dog down last year).
I just hope it was quick and she wasn’t scared.

Hugs Mrs. Anteater to you and your son.

She was 65? That is so young.

You deal with a lot of those when managing a cemetery ... some say it is morbid ... but man alive so much to be learned about human reactivity!

Perhaps you have to be a bit crazy (as part shrink)! Thus the wee or humbling portion ... not cracked up to what it is ...

Hugs to Mrs Anteater and son. I think 65 is too young to die - but my dad only got to 64. My brother died at 65 and my sister at 66.

Condolences to you and to her family. We had a friend who passed several years back who played the Grandma role for Little M when he was little since my mother was dead and Mrs M's lives overseas. She had a grandchild of her own but he lived some distance away.

@GiancarloZ, did I see there was a bad fire in Brazil?
Yeah, @crazyheart :(
It was an abandoned Governmental building which had been used by homeless people. Until now, they don't know if the tragedy made any victims. But all those families lost their home - a precarious one, but yet it was their roof.
It also destroyed 80% of the oldest Lutheran church in São Paulo. Just the tower and the altar remained.
A sad May 1st for us.

65 does seem too young, nowadays. Sorry, Mrs. Anteater. Condolences to you and your son.

That's awful. Was it deliberate or accidental? Probably too early to know.

Municipalities usually require abandoned buildings be secured for this reason. These places represent shelter from the elements, but they are also dangerous places to live if a fire breaks out, which often happens when people try to burn candles for light or create a makeshift cooker for food. Truly tragic.

Seems like it was a pressure pan that exploded and hit a gas canister. The whole building had wood partitions that burned fast.

One report I heard suggested that the use of open elevator shafts for garbage disposal in these buildings might be part of the problem. But where are homeless people supposed to live?

Mrs. Anteater, sorry to hear about your neighbour/surrogate grandma to Anteater Jr. 65 seems far too young to die. My family tends to some level of longevity, it appears. My parents both died a little younger than their family averages (77 and 80), largely due to lifetime chronic illnesses that didn't occur in most of their siblings.

The Federal Union was the building owner. They didn't secure it, apparently; even though it's required, it's difficult to enforce the Union to do anything here. The housing situation in Brazil is, per se, a tragedy.
