We used to because rivers were the easiest way to move materials before railways and highways. As a result, many of our older cities straddle rivers. That said, there are ways to deal with that. London, for instance, basically turned most of the Thames floodplain into parkland which minimizes the amount of damage floods can do.

Because they are usually flat and, if we build it somebody will buy it.

Why do we build near geological fault lines? Why do we build in areas below sea-level? Why do we build where Hurricanes land?

Because as foolish as it is to build in such dangerous places there are bigger fools who will buy those homes.

Well - sort of. I have family who live on that flood plain. They will flood faster and deeper if/when the Thames flood control gates are put to use.
 
Why?
When the river was the highway people built along it.
Land that is periodically flooded tends to be richer for growing crops than highlands.
People who build on flood plains usually expect and prepare for some flooding (ie don't finish basements, build a firm foundation)
Most floods are not severe and do not cover as large an area. SSevere floods used to happen a couple of times in a lifetime.
Now they are more frequent - this is the second in ten years.
Some people consider the trade-off - riverfront property vs risking occasional flooding - to be worthwhile. Some think that they can build breakwaters and buildings tht will withstand flooding.
And some people buy houses and winterized cottages without doing their homework and realizing they are on a flood plain.

I went to my deceased friends home today to meet with her -I am not sure if this would be a step son- the son of her late partners first marriage). I was glad that he was easy going. He is the executor of the will, and my friend had left a note that junior anteater and his girlfriend are to have first pick on any furniture and household items they can use, because they had just bought their house. I was afraid that she did prefer junior over her own step grands ( and in fact, junior was seeing her much more often , while the steps haven’t been in touch for years).
So it was in fact a heart attack that took her away in her sleep. Kind of what we all wish for, but not so early.
I picked up the loaner medical equipment that I had organized for her.
Junios girlfriend said, juniors is toughing it, but he had a cry while having a shower after I had told him. I wish, he ‘d allow himself some more emotions..
We had supper tonight together. GF is really good for him, she is getting him.

Death doesn't affect some people until they have a face to face confrontation ... creates some complexity in a host of people ... perhaps because of denial?
 
Looking forward to a meeting tomorrow after church. We're having a Men's Workday next Saturday, so those of us who are Captains for the event are getting together to discuss the work to be done.

Today at church, many of the women are getting together for a Ladies' Tea. I hope it will be fun and a good bonding time for all of them.
 
Last as I savor a beautiful spring day. Inside now because I have some "red head' genes and need to worry about sunburn.

Inside... outside... that's what we need to meet and discuss. Probably some more outside than we expected due to last night's windstorm.
