|Don't know where to put this, so maybe @Pinga has the answer. I see my kids charging

there phones (or something lol), so my question is, in the flood disaster area, you

see people using cell phones. Where do they plug them in to recharge them.

Junior Anteater and his GF ( he is 22 and she is 20) are buying a house. Just waiting to see if they get a mortgage, but they already signed the offer. House is 80 yrs old, a starter home. They just have $10000 downpayment and part of that is her education loan she didn't use up. I am worried, but of course, they don't listen. They think they don't want to pay rent for someone else and not getting anything out of it. But honestly, how long is the life expectancy of a wooden house, if its already 80 yrs old?
Once they got the mortgage, they will have a home inspection. He has a job with VW, she works part time in a group home.
I don't think they have any idea what costs are coming at them...

They will learn soon! The bank/mortgage company may help them run some numbers to get a more realistic view of things - and who knows if they'll get the mortgage - possibly won't happen. But yes - they won't listen to you - really, you're JUST the mom, what could you possibly know? They will learn lots - some of it the hard way & that's hard to watch. I totally understand your concern, but likely nothing you can do to change their minds - so don't cosign the mortgage and stand by to offer input when (and only when) asked.

Oh, no, no cosigning. Her dad and grandparents had been through the house with them (dad is electrician) and I was the last one they told. They knew why..

Well crap. On the way to church today I got rear-ended. Someone making a left turn in front of me stopped suddenly as a pedestrian stepped off the curb. I braked hard & stopped with ample distance, but the truck behind me didn't get stopped in time. The turning car just kept on going, and the pedestrian disappeared. No serious injury fortunately & my bumper will need replacement - so didn't call the police. Truck was being driven by a young woman - had two school age kids in the back. She was pleasant & cooperative.

We exchanged info - or tried to. She did not have driver's license with her ("loaned it my friend last night & I'm just going to pick it up"). No ownership for the truck - "boyfriend's truck". I verified the back plate # & noticed the expiry tag was 2014. She did at least have her own insurance papers & I verified her name with other ID she was carrying. I explained to her that with these numerous infractions, she was damn lucky I was not calling police at that time. Asked her to call me with her DL #. Got home to a message waiting - she'd like to chat & offer me the option to take the car directly to a shop. I don't think so!!!! With too many irregularities I'm definitely going through insurance!!

So that's how my day started! How is yours going??

Oh dear.
Who loans a license?

Corolla, I think I would have called the police at that point of expired plates and no licence

On the other hand, you may be most likely to get your money by going straight to shop.

Sorry about all this happening to you

Carolla, that is definitely a bum(p)er of a way to start the day. Here, in such cases, both parties go to the police station to report the accident. That record helps make it feel a little more legit, I think.

Yes - I initiated a claim with my insurance company; will go to collision reporting centre later in the day to file a police report. Have to go to the airport this afternoon to pick somebody up - had a neighbour come to check that all my rear lights are in good working order after the event. It'll get sorted out ... just inconvenient! Hopefullly her insurance is legit - otherwise I'll have to pay deductible.

Those who have friends underage that look somewhat similar to them. Doesn't even need to be legally underage, many of the clubs around here sometimes got sticky about letting those under 25 in, although it was typically males they weeded out that way.

Watch out for whiplash! It often shows up after the fact. Hopefully the insurance goes smoothly.

Mrs.anteater - I can think of a lot of worse things young people can do with their money than buying a house. Hopefully the one they have chosen is not too expensive (80 year old fixer-upper) and that it is liveable without expensive repairs. How is the location? The value may be in the property rather than the building. But don't co-sign for them. If it is not a good investment, I can't see the bank giving them a mortgage - that might keep them from getting in over their heads.

Carolla - what a bummer - and those causing the accident just continuing on their way? They could have been witnesses, at least.
I hope that all goes well with the insurance company.

Little M has some money invested already that is supposed to be seed money for a future downpayment. Now if he would just stop investing in speculative stocks like medical pot growers ...

Anyhow, it is his problem now. Tomorrow morning we leave Ottawa without him. He's got a cozy (read "small") private room in residence and seems to be getting to know people already. We took him to dinner tonight and his mood seems good. We shall see how things go once we are 6 hours away.

Personal recommendation/remembrance of youth? Thanksgiving was hard; needed to get home then. By then you've realized how different it is than high school and how pathetic you are (one of the geniuses at your high school) compared to the geniuses from other high schools...and you're a little worried about the workload and need some love.

I think it will be a long drive home :( Travel safe.

We're leaving Muskoka tonight. If we wait until morning, the traffic will make us wish we were driving from Ottawa.
