Yummy, enjoy those berries, innanawhimsey. I am going to. Try to remember to ask you to put out a virtual bowl in January for us

Wow, beloved that would be scary. In my case it was my manager, plus the manager above us on the phone with our director. So, people that I know quite well. I can imagine what being with a stranger who is out of control.

Hope things work out chemgal.

Hi everyone

I've posted a bit here and there. Sometimes it seems difficult to chime in because I am not as familiar with all of you.

It's warmer here today about 20C with cloudy spots. Supposed to be a pretty nice week, but for some reason the city closes the beaches today so no more supervised swimming (which really doesn't make a lot of sense to me - it should go to Labour Day, I think).

I tore my calf muscle on Thursday night so I'm on crutches - being overweight and a weakling does not make this an easy feat. Tried to find cushions for them but couldn't - I'll try wrapping towels around them later.

Hope you all had a good weekend! Hope all the travellers have fun; Chemgal that your new plan works out; and I am so envious of the blackberries!

Ouch Ouch justme! Sorry to hear about that injury - how long do you expect to be on crutches? You'll be stronger when you finish than you re now - I suppose that's the good news!

That does seem early to close beaches - summer is not finished yet I hope!

I went to Black Creek Pioneer Village today to see a quilt exhibit - over 200 beauties displayed throughout the park - wonderful!

Carolla - I love quilts. I visited an old friend in the country a week or so ago. Her husband built an extra room onto their house for her quilting - big windows on three sides for natural light. She always a quilt on - she can't keep up with orders - gifts for graduations, weddings, grandchildren. Her mother-in-law taught her when she was a newly-wed with a baby on the way and a husband working in the woods for the winter.

A group of women in our church also does quilts - usually by order. Even through the summer they would come in to the parlor on Wednesday mornings and sit and talk and quilt.

And I remember as a child looking for pieces of material matching my new dress or my brother's pajamas in the new quilt Mom would put on my bed.

Probably a week or two. I went to the ER and the doc told me to see a sports med doc and didn't really give me any guidance. It's a three week wait for a sports med doc. A friend suggested a physio who is closely linked to a doc's office so I'm going to try that on Tuesday (if my arms hold out!).

The quilt show sounds awesome. I love quilts. My cousin is a quilter and I love her stuff. At 10,000 Villages we have recycled Sari throws that are kind of like quilts made from saris (I hope I'm spelling that correctly) - they are beautiful.

For sure - seeing a physio is a great idea @Justme - will most likely give you much more helpful info than a doc :-)

I used to quilt many long years ago - mainly crib size quilts which were lots of fun & didn't make too terribly long to make. About six years ago I made a quilt using a collection of my daughter's T-shirts - it was a lot of fun to do. I made the quilt top & sent it out for quilting by someone with a long arm machine, then I finished the binding around the edges.

Several that I saw today were completely made from fabric from men's shirts, which was interesting. And there was a collection of Quilts of Valour - many quilt guilds make these quilts - some lap size, some bed size - and they are distributed to our soldiers who are wounded - rather like we do with our prayer shawls.

@Seeler - one man I spoke with at the Valour exhibit was a great quilter - he had some pieces there that he was using to demonstrate the different patterns that could be made - and he told me he has early Parkinson's disease & he finds it to be great therapy :-) Warmed my OT heart to hear that.

I had an idea at the church for the Millennium. Two women picked material and symbols of the church.
The idea was that the quilt would be set up and anyone could come in and quilt a little or a lot.
Most of these dear women have died so it won't hurt to tell this story.
One woman was a terrible quilter. But she loved it. She would quilt every day.
Another woman was a ex home ec teacher, and a perfectionist. She would come in at night. undo all the woman's stitches and do it over.
Women of Worth in their own way
It was beautiful when finished. We hung it in the Sanctuary but "blankets are not to be hung in church" hahahahaha
So now it is hanging in a lounge- like room, I think..

Crazyheart - what's the difference between hanging a quilt and a banner. Come to think of it, we had a quilted banner at my previous church. I would love to see a big colourful rainbow quilted on a suitable background and hung from our balcony. I wish I could do one and donate it. That would stir things up!

Parkinsons effects different people different ways. Some people might find quilting or knitting or handicrafts helpful. Me - I have to have help threading my needles and hemming a pair of pants is difficult, time-consuming and exhausting. (I have two pairs to be hemmed for fall.) I have trouble manipulating things with my fingers. On the other hand, today I heard of someone in the early stages who has frequent falls. I've never had that problem. I'm careful, but I can still use the step-stool in the kitchen, or stand on a small chair to reach the chain on my ceiling fan.

Hi Justme,
As an occupational therapist I'd urge you NOT to pad your crutches. For proper use there should be a gap between top of crutch and armpit. Crutches should lean against top of ribs, they can do nerve damage if armpits lean on them.

In university I was involved in a study on how to best rain fitness for crutch walking. Several methods were tried but the best way for training for crutch walking was to actually crutch walk!

I love quilting and have some on the go right now-even the pieces cut for a man's shirt one Carolla.

Justme, hopefully the tear isn't too severe. Rest up and follow the experts advice!

I'm feeling pretty bad being off the meds. I am not looking forward to the exercise class tomorrow, it's going to be a long day as there's a session after it and I have my appointment in the afternoon. I don`t know if this plan is going to be feasible for me, but I`m going to try to hold out for the appointment. I probably should be treating though. Last class the instructor was telling people to not try to keep pace with me. Tomorrow will be someone new, and I think there`s a good chance I will be setting the pace for at least some in the group - and that might be some of the slowest!

Made it through the exercise class and classroom portion alright. Felt kinda miserable throughout, but I did it. The appointment today went well, I think I might give it a shot. The big issue is what I can treat, if it's only actual signs of an attack, that's no good. If I can treat when I start hitting exhaustion, etc. I'm going to try this study out.

Greetings all!

It's great to pop in and see how everyone is doing and what is happening in their lives! My company arrived on Sunday, and I haven't been on the internet much . . . but today they have gone in to town to visit other family . . . so I am taking a few minutes at my lunch break to see what is happening. There are so many posts and so much information that I know I am not going to comment on it all . . . but I am thinking about all of you.

I am in the midst of baking two blueberry pies for tomorrow night's supper. I've never made a blueberry pie. And I am kind of cheating because I have used frozen crusts . . . I hope it is okay.

We had two beautiful summer days in the sun . . . it was great because the kids got to play in the water and outside lots. It is raining today, but this is their in town day.

Justme - this is a good place to get to know one another a little better . . . sorry to hear about your torn calf muscle - hope you are able to get the treatment you need and that it heals soon and well.

I am not a quilter, but several of the ladies in our church get together and quilt once a week . . . and the quilts are donated to a variety of people with a variety of needs.

If you need a second opinion, I'm happy to test those pies (frozen crust or not!) before you serve them to your guests. I'll bring along my dairy-free coconut "ice cream" to serve on the side. Any other takers?

Molasses ginger cookies coming up - hot from the oven. A break from my usual nutritious oatmeal raisin cookies.
Spend the day waiting in vain for Seelergirl to drop in. I haven't seen her for a week,--she lives 15 min away, and works even closer. I'm used to seeing her more often. I phoned a couple of days ago - she was supposed to drop in a few minutes last evening but phoned that she was running late. She told me that she had today off, and would drop around. But it hasn't happened. I hope that there isn't anything wrong in her life - other than the usual hastle of kids, work, health, etc. I think that her (soon to be) eX might be giving her some trouble - either money or house (he's living in it) or kids.

Hey Hilary, my husband has driven 100+ kilometers today (round trip of close to 230 kms) to get me some dairy-free coconut "ice cream" for my special day . . . he is getting me vanilla bean and chocolate. I tried some for the first time a few weeks ago, but cannot buy it here, but there is a health food store in a community south of us that sells it. I phoned and they had some, so he went to get me some :). Isn't he a swell guy?
