True, although it's not actually quite as large a drop as you'd think. By the time you stop paying CPP, EI, your pension contribution, your parking, a few decent clothes and the odd lunch out, the difference means you're working for about $2 an hour...
 
No parking costs, I get mileage for all my school to school travel, Last I calculated it would be 1/4 to 1/3 of my take-home pay. I went into the pension late.
 
Hi folks, I have been reflecting on retirement with folks, as they are considering, asking, pondering.

Yesterday, a young friend "M" had a spare ticket to Stratford's "Shakespeare in love" and offered it up on facebook. I wasn't online (I know, shocker) and missed it. I felt bad for her Mom who couldnt' go due to work commitments, and was thankful someone would be able to go.

Today, I went to my car appointment this morning, only to be told it wasn't today, it was next Tuesday: d'oh. Started home. As I drove, my phone rang, and it was "M". The person who had taken her up on the ticket couldn't go! Was I interested? Yes, was my response, and when I got home we figured out timing, and I eneded up having a delightful lunch, and then enjoying the play. We had a few hours to catchup, and it was just good. Then, her Mom arrived home just as we were getting back to the city, and so I had a delightful unexpected conversation with her as well and a cup of tea.

As I drove home from a great day, I decided to call home, and tell them I would go straight to the games night at a local church. They told me that "S" had called, so I gave her a call on the way home. She had wondered if I was still going to games night, and ...she was interested in going. Another delightful surprise.

I love this flexibility and sharing experiences with folks. Such a good day.

Are murmurs like distant white noise in the darkness of the soul of mankind ... a social construct determinate on the not knowing scheme? Sort of out of the here and now ... but few believe in abstract stuff ... imagine!
 
Had a big scare in the early hours of the morning. Very odd sensation that lead me to believe half my throat was swollen *shut* ie. half of my throat was touching. It was a bit of instant fright the second I woke up, as I had already been dreaming about it. Got some water and felt better seeing I could swallow it normally.

No pain though, not even sure if it was an attack. I do find I tend to get attacks in my sleep - all my life I used to have sore throats shortly after waking up that would gradually go away. Maybe a super minor one giving an odd sensation? I think all is well but *shudder* at what I thought I had felt. Hoping to get back to sleep, it wasn't something where I could just go back to bed after a few minutes. Wish I had Chemguy's superpower - once he knew I was fine he feel asleep.
 
Chemgal, many people have sore throat at waking, myself included, due to the way we sleep.

I am glad that you didn't have an attack but sorry that you had such a scare.
 
OK I posted about being in church last sunday and knowing the couple (from 30 years ago) that we prayed for in Prayers of the People.
I found out on Facebbok that she she passed away yesterday. So glad I sent a letter and card this week.

And just let me say very small world once again. I found out as a Vancouver fb friend (whom I met on WC) commented on a post from her FB feed).

My prayers are with the family and I sent an e-mail to her brother in law.

Thanks, I got a fair bit more sleep.

The sore throat thing is why mine were brushed off in the past. We know at least the ones I have had in the past few years were due to HAE, as the medication wouldn't work on them otherwise.
 
Gulp. We had an obscene phone call yesterday....very, very awful. First, of course, the guy was trying to get my credit card information. I didn't give it but I thought I was being polite. Then I hung up. He called back (we don't have caller display) and my husband answered. Well....the words and ideas that came out of his mouth! We contacted the police but they said they couldn't do anything about it. Isn't there some way to block these calls that come from an unknown source? I found it very unsettling.
 
Many years ago a colleague's husband had bad phone calls. They reported it to Bell Canada and the person was traced. Not sure if the police were involved but it seemed to be that the issue was handled by Bell. Not sure either what happened to the person but the calls stopped.
 
I think there is nothing you can do unless you want to pay the monthly fee for an unlisted number. I am on the Do Not Market list and the duct cleaners are interminable, as well as the fake credit card and revenue canada people. I largely let the machine pick it up, if it's at all inconvenient for me to pick up the phone, and my family and friends know that. If I do get one, I save my blood pressure by gently putting the phone down on the nearest soft surface and letting them talk to Radio 2 and the dogs until they go away.
 
Exactly. You need an unlisted number to make sure you don't get these calls. As soon as your number is listed on Canada411.ca, you're on telemarketing lists. Period.

You should contact your phone company. It is likely to late to do anything about the exact call you mention in your post. Moving forward the phone company might be able to give you instructions for moving forward.

Some phone service providers can put a trap on your phone line. Typically a two week period in which incoming calls are recorded (not the content of the call but the number they originate from) You will provide a log of incoming calls (date and time) and if one of those calls is the offending number they have been caught in the trap and the Phone Company and the police have something to work with.

Not this one since it seems more of a scam. Legitimate businesses can be prevented from calling by signing onto the Do Not Call List.

We have Call Display and if a call doesn't either match a number in our phone's directory or show a name/number that we recognize, it does not get answered. In the rare cases that it is "legit", they get our voicemail and can leave a message.
 
Yes, call display would help a lot. But I'm actually trying to reduce my Bell bill these days. If the horrible phone calls continue though, it will be worth the extra that I will need to pay. So far, today -- only nice phone calls from nice people. (all family!)

We've been off Bell for about two years. Use a Chinese voice over Internet (VOIP) service. Runs us about twelve bucks a month including a bit of LD. Basic package includes Call Display, three way calling, and a mailbox on the provider's voicemail system. You can even forward your calls to another phone and install an app on your cell phone that lets you makes calls on your VOIP account instead of using your cell minutes. Also Includes 1 hour of free overseas calling which keeps the LD down (most of our long distance calling is to Mrs. M's folks in China) and a Chinese local number that Mrs. M's family can use to call us. No major problems so far but we have a fairly good internet connection now.
