Low 20s this weekend, I'm having a slow start but looking forward to getting outside!
The breeze coming in from the windows feels great and I'm not smelling any smoke.

I never knew we had so many ex-pat Yanks in my neighbourhood:rolleyes:. I've been hearing almost as much fireworks tonight as I did on Canada Day.

Some people are (perhaps illegally) lighting them off tonight instead of on the 1st as this is the weekend.

None here, but it's early.
Sometimes American expat groups have (legal) celebrations, I know Calgary had decent ones, haven't really heard about them here.

Should neighbors who light off fireworks on days other than Victoria Day and Canada Day be reported? I have mixed feelings.

Half the time you can't tell who it is. You just hear noise from down the street or across the block. I wouldn't bother tying up the cops with something like that, anyway. There's far more serious offences that they could be dealing with. This is nuisance stuff save for the rare case where it starts a fire or something (and even then, that could just as easily happen on a legal fireworks day).

Illegally? Yes, I think so.
It seems to be more acceptable elsewhere though. People can get permits and certain safety aspects are required for them to reduce the risk of setting a fire.

It's what bylaw was made for. I wouldn't call cops, I would call 311.

Yes, but what if an unfortunate fire did start, and I knew the firework use was going on but opted not to report on it. Would I be liable. That isn't my major concern though. At close to 11pm it's becoming the noise.

It's stopped here, both tonight on the 1st, well before 11 so no concerns there. Fireworks are municipal by-laws, as @ChemGal pointed out, so there's no liability there for not reporting. The people lighting it off only get a small fine anyhow.

check your bylaws. In our city, they can be set up to two days before or after canada day, except where there has been inclement weather in which case it can be held up to 7 days.

I have no problem with people setting off fireworks on the weekend before or after. happy for tem, glad they are enjoying. thinking of kids giggling, of parents fretting, of joy shared around the neighbourhood.

Thanks Pinga, I did check the bylaws. Fireworks are allowed at one's home without permit on Victoria Day and Canada Day. For other days than those, a permit must be obtained.

That glee that you write of goes into the mixed feelings of mine which I admitted to. The people setting off the fireworks near me (which still haven't stopped) are those at an annual block party to which my family and I never get invited. I don't want to report them out of revenge.

Why? My son lives in a foreign country. If he and his friends wanted to get together to celebrate a holiday, I don't see why they shouldn't - unless they require a permit to light fireworks and they didn't obtain one. I hope that they obey the laws of the land. I see no reason why people in Canada shouldn't join their neighbours in celebration. Unless, of course, lighting fireworks is in itself illegal or dangerous.

Seeler, here in T-dot people can only light fireworks at home on Victoria Day and Canada Day without a permit.

Anyway, what I finally decided to do was to report them if they were still at it at midnight. Thankfully, they brought things to a close around 11:30pm.

Um, you do realize that block parties don't always send out specific invites, just put up posters or fliers inviting the whole neighbourhood? That's how it worked here when a neighbour used to have one the odd time.

That sounds like a good way to do things Mendalla. No such posters or flyers were up in our neighborhood :(

I wonder why Jae and family were not invited to block party? Was it informal invites ie word of mouth community notice and they just did not notice? Or were they deliberately excluded?
A true bock party includes the block.
Or was it a private party that just included many neighbours but not Jae's household?

As for fireworks-perhaps the neighbours DID have a permit. How did you know they didn't?

Jae why don't you invite this set of neighbours over for a barbeque and pool party? You might want to get to know them better.

I know neither why we're never invited nor the nature of the invitation. I can say with confidence that there are no signs or invites posted on telephone poles, etc. It may all be by word of mouth. I can't say either that we were deliberately excluded, though it does feel that way. It could be a private party, though if it is a private party, it's a private party to which virtually the entire street is invited. The only people who seem to never get the invite are the Chinese family down the road, us, and the Indian family up the road. So as to why we're never invited, I hope it's just that they feel that they don't know us well enough to invite us. I hope it isn't racism that's going on. It could also be because they don't feel comfortable inviting us over because I'm a pastor.

I don't know that they didn't Tabitha. I never claimed here a knowledge that they didn't. I simply don't know.

What, all of them? That's a great idea Tabitha, but that'd be about 100 people. We don't have the funds to entertain such a number.
