Novel Coronavirus

It seems to me that this is being dealt with very appropriately, on a whole bunch of levels.

Very open communication, wide share of virus DNA markers, appropriately selective quarantine.

I'm actually quite impressed. Bravo, world!

Tell us, if you knew you had the virus but only with mild symptoms, would you self quarantine or would you keep running around spreading it because you don’t want to be limited in your freedom and this is just a form of “ natural selection”? Which, of course, in fact it would be, if we haven’t invented all kinds of beneficial technologies to treat diseases.
Tell me ... when you have mild symptoms - 'flu like' - at what stage do you go to the Doctor or Hospital and get a verified result of the 'name of the virus'. I never go to the Dr. when I have what we all like to call 'the flu' without ever actually having a test result that verifies that we actually have a particular strain of influenza.

So if I have mild flu-like symptoms - I self quarantine as fast as I can - and then I take the time to allow myself to get better. If my symptoms get worse - to the degree that I am quite sure that it is a type of pneumonia or a serious bacterial infection that will not go away without 'medical treatment' - then I make an appointment with a Doctor or go to an Emergency Clinic. When I get a 'diagnosis' - I am advised of the best course of treatment - I get my prescription if I need one - I return home and take precautions not to spread whatever I have to anyone else.

That is what I do and have done ... sounds fairly logical to me.

Not very logical of you on the other hand to ignore what I do say and make up ridiculous scenarios in hopes of overriding the logic behind my assessment of this particular 'outbreak of deadly 'pneumonia'.

To try to portray me as some knowingly disease spreading maniac in the name of my personal freedom ...

Sticking with the official narrative as it is laid out for you ... I am not surprised.

Holy s**t.

Yes auntie, this is the drone speaking to you," a voice booms out. "You shouldn't walk about without wearing a mask."
The woman hurries off, occasionally looking over her shoulder as the drone continues to shout instructions: "You'd better go back home and don't forget to wash your hands."
This is China under quarantine i
n 2020. In another video promoted by state media, a police drone orders men sitting at an outdoor mahjong table to "stop playing and leave the site as soon as possible."

@BetteTheRed @Lastpointe?

Kimmio, does it seem reasonable to you that a country of the ancient history and enormous size of China has the right to govern itself as it sees fit? I know you're trying to be "human rights"-y, but you're coming across as quite prejudiced. And whether you like it or not, given your rather condemning conversation about the death penalty, the U.S., China and three Middle Eastern nations share the dubious title of "most state executions". China's is higher, they think (it's hard to get solid information); but per capita, fairly similar. The U.S. really likes murdering people, particularly mentally ill and developmentally challenged people.

We can all play the "I'm the noblest Roman of them all" but it's time for some honesty......

Quarantining is the right precaution when it comes to a "new" dangerous virus.
BUT!

We live in the real world. I'm now retired - yet if I'm feeling a little unwell I'll still keep up most of my engagements. I won't mix with anyone who I know is frail or has health problems -but I'll still go to the supermarket, chemist, Post Office, etc.
But imagine if you are frightened about losing your employment, because you are on a low wage and have bills to pay, a family to support, would you risk losing your valuable job when you are still physically capable of working?
I live in a big city, and I suspect most folks in this city are thinking, " Well, all Aussies who've contracted this virus, none have died and most have recovered, so I think it's reasonable to not risk losing my employment at this stage."

I suspect this scenario isn't confined to Australia -all over the world this is the reality concerning health and government officials........

There was at least one coworker who was unable to return to work due to flights being cancelled from China. He did what he could from there.
I know some students were also requesting professors to stream or post lectures online due to the virus too.

It's not prejudiced @BetteTheRed. Is posting articles about the downside prejudiced? Ones I didn't write? The Chinese government is awfully authoritarian. The people have no choice and cannot criticize or they face severe punishment. We're not going to hear much from them because they are limited to where and what they can say. I don't think the people enjoy being harassed by shouting drones. We don't want that to be an example to be used here, do we? It's pretty dystopian. Very. Dystopian.

You are prejudiced for bringing up disability in this context - it sounds spiteful. Though since you had to bring it up because you're talking to me, I'm pretty sure the death rate for people with disabilities is higher in China.

Kimmio, when I was doing a little on-line research about the comparative rates of execution, the main article that I referred to specifically mentioned the concerns that groups such as Amnesty International have with the U.S. when it comes to the number of people with very low IQs, specifically, on death row. It had nothing to do with you.

I just find your attitude towards an entire country and culture curiously western-centric.

Also, I suspect, because of the long standing one child policy, only quite recently relaxed, and a liberal abortion policy, there are fewer disabled children born in China.

It's about their government, not people. They didn't elect their government. Also...Having fewer disabled children doesn't automatically equal "a good thing".

Curiously, the government's initial mishandling of information about the virus (which then sent them into authoritarian overdrive), and the subsequent death of the whistleblower doctor, has started a chain reaction of citizens demanding freedom of speech and expression - they are only allowed to post on tightly government monitored social media sites - but they are starting to speak out.

Not to worry, Canucks, our Aussie scientists are on their way to developing a vaccine - so if you can just hang on for about a year - a vaccine will calm down the hysteria. ;)

Oops, I don't think my link worked - not to worry, I'm not the Aussie working on the vaccine........

This is supposed to be reassuring?

In a major breakthrough in the global fight against coronavirus, scientists in Australia have developed a lab-grown version of the disease.

Described as a “game-changer” which will help scientists determine whether a future vaccine is effective, experts at Melbourne’s Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity on Tuesday became the world’s first scientific lab outside of China to re-create the virus.

They will now share it with the World Health Organisation (WHO) in Europe, which will in turn share it with labs worldwide — including one from Queensland — involved in the worldwide race to develop a vaccine.

For all the draconian measures being taken, it's likely that this coronavirus will never go out of circulation. Like the other four coronaviruses in permanent circulation, which all produce cold and flu symptoms that can lead to pneumonia, which is potentially deadly. Which means they are putting human beings through extraordinary rights violations as some kind of mass exercise that is not transparent.

What I think about is how long was this virus circulating before the numbers became large enough to start registering significant deaths and illness.....was it spreading quietly before it became noticable and alerts went out? After all it began with just a few cases and then started to increase at some point exponentially. And right now there are other countries at that beginning stage. Will they have a higher caseload down the road? It could go either way....contained or not?
Also im not so sure this is an ordinary flu like what we are familiar with given all the hype.....maybe the hype we're being fed is that its "just another flu like virus" but then again maybe its not. Who knows? Because there are just as many reports that say the opposite to the site you posted.....we are sitting ducks basically, waiting to see how it pans out.
