We're moving to step 1 tomorrow, I don't think it's enough. I suspect we'll be back to some of the restrictions pre-step 1 (step 0?) within a month.

Ford is planning to ratchet things up in Ontario tomorrow it sounds like, though possibly only in the worst-hit areas. The GTA is still pretty much driving the numbers in Ontario and the mayors of Mississauga and Toronto are screaming for more action in their areas. Of course, if he only targets the GTA, we're back to areas around the GTA having to deal with Torontonians trying to sneak out to shop, get haircuts, etc.

This doesn't shutdown much. In person inside dining and there's a delay for that for inventory to be used. Shopping personal care etc. allowed. Gyms still open but not for groups.

Yes, it's like... 'WE'RE CLAMPING DOWN EVERYTHING... except for this, so they can use inventory... oh, and this, because people will 'need' that... oh, and these, too, we wouldn't want those multibillionaires to lose a few weeks' profits...'

Except we aren't just talking multibillionaires here. They aren't going to suffer much. It's the local businesses that are being hurt by these shutdowns. If this keeps up, only the big chains owned by multibillionaires will be left. We need to do it once and right, and get the vaccine pipeline moving (and get retail workers moved up the queue). Instead we keep doing these half-arsed half measures that do more harm than good.

And the Barrie Walmart stores are host to a bunch of employee COVID-19 cases, and we're still allowing Walmart and Costco to stay open? This is SOOOOOOOOOOOOO stupid.
That's the one that continues to astound me. Let them open only their grocery areas. Rope off the rest. That said, we haven't had any retail outbreaks of note here in a while. And it was mostly big grocery stores like Superstore back when we had them. The university has been the biggest single problem in third wave. I think six residences are now in declared outbreaks.

Well over here very little is shutting down.

I don't like the declaration of essential and non-essential items in stores. I was thankful places like yarn stores, Michaels and Best Buy were open with safety measures. After all, crafts and entertainment are arguably essential during lockdowns.

They do need to restrict numbers going into the big stores.

And here Kenney has even spoken out about declaring one store essential and another not, which I agree with to some extent - his 'biggest regret' of this although I can think of things I would rank higher if I had been the one who did what he did. I wish in general numbers inside were decreased, especially malls and maybe the government could do something to help boost curbside options.

I hope we do it right this time, with province wide 'stay at home' orders. Restrict the big box stores to essential aisles only, to make it a level playing field for all retail businesses.

NS os opening up to Atlantic provinces again, keeping a watchful eye on NB hotspots. Not the other way around yet, though. Not sure if that isn’t a bit early, considering how quickly the variants can spread. Would have waited until at least 60% of Nova Scotians are vaccinated.

I don't even know what is/not allowed any more. Across the country our 'leaders' seem to be handing out mixed messages, and changed messages creating frustration and confusion. I mostly stay home except for walks in areas where it would be surprising to meet someone else. Our stores are open, also hairdressers, dentists and similar, we don't have any huge box stores. Yesterday I did the monthly 'big shop' in an almost empty store. By choice I use the smaller of three grocery places as it is locally owned. Many of the town's seniors also shop there as it can be hard to get around the ones that are spread out over a whole block.

I think that gets silly as it's hard to determine what is essential at times, different products different usages, essential businesses etc.

If only grocery stores and pharmacies are being allowed to open (other than for curbside) than those are the sections that are essential. My Costco and Walmart both have those well delineated and could easily rope off the rest while keeping them accessible. Now, if Home Depot, Rona, etc. are allowed to open as has been the case at times in past "lockdowns" (and I do use the term loosely), the Walmart could reasonably expect to be allowed to open their Home Improvement section. But if the home improvement stores are only allowed to open their garden centres, then same for Walmart is reasonable and mine has it mostly outside with its own cashier so should not be a big issue..

I would think things like fridges microwaves shoes warm clothes etc. are essential. I don't think it makes sense to pick and choose.

Interesting opinion piece today. Suggested stop worrying about this and put all energy and work into faster vaccinations. Particularly of people out working. These little lock downs really aren’t doing anything. All the cases are from places deemed essential I think I read a day ago or so that in Ontario there has been one outbreak attributed to hair cutting places. And less than ten to restaurants

Who gets to decide what is essential anyway? Some businesses like Best Buy and Michaels have been able to mix online and in person so that you can order online and get curbside pick-up. The small yarn store and fabric stores here have arranged for a combination of phone service and arranging to pick up the order at the door. Crafts are essential to many of us when we're confined to quarters. A better stove is essential for others. Instead of declaring some things essential why not make it safer to purchase what you need. Of course rates involves some limits.

I think that is what a lot of small businesses are trying to say. Establish rules for everyone. It’s easy to see a small store like we have in our little town. Two customers at a time. Only. Masks. .......harder in a mall. The square footage is so huge that thousands of people can be inside and that seems unsafe.

all Of this is not helping us solve this problem Canada has slipped from 51st in the world to 54 th. Which is totally unbelievable. But here we are. An incompetent government getting us vaccines and incompetent health rules and slow vaccinations. We seem to be somewhere around 13% of the country with one shot, kind of depending on what web site you look at. Meanwhile the USA is now at 50%

its no wonder that people are fed up and confused
