Not liking sick with flu, liking Call the Midwife. I've been deliberately stretching it out, so I'm still on season 5, though nearing the end.
 
One thing that brought me back to Netflix was their acquisition of the rights to the Monty Python back catalogue (previously available on Crave). I have been watching the first season of the original Monty Python's Flying Circus TV series and loving it. It is probably what turned me into a lover of absurdist sketch comedy and I haven't watched any episodes since it came out on VHS decades ago. Seeing the classic sketches in their original form is a delight. While I have watched And Now For Something Completely Different, a movie that is basically a "best of", they actually redid and reshot the sketches for it and the TV and movie versions sometimes have some different twists and punchlines. Netflix also has the movies and some compilations and documentaries, too, but I have been focussing on the show so far.

The old guy and I are just working our way through the 8th season of Shameless (not available yet on Netflix). It's funny, but increasingly, it's a commentary on life in America that is pretty friggin' accurate. Also, it's VERY funny in spots... And the characters are quite well-developed, and increasingly engage the viewer in relationship with them.
 
First season of Flying Circus finished. Many laughs had. It definitely stands up for me all these years later.

Started Season 2 last night. First episode is the first one where I actually know I have seen it before. Very familiar and very good. Ministry of Silly Walks and The Piranha Brothers are the highlights, but the whole episode hangs together very well, with gags from early sketches coming up in the background of later ones.

Somewhere upthread (or maybe in a different TV thread) @chansen and I talked about Archer. This animated (But not for kids. Really, really not for kids) show started off as a spy spoof, with a bumbling Bond clone, the titular "Archer", undertaking the usual spy-fi missions while dealing with working for his overbearing, alcoholic mother, the other titular "Archer", while various other agency employees circled around them. It's dysfunctional workplace comedy meets James Bond and amped up to 11.

But the recent seasons have seen them doing stories with versions of the same characters set in other eras. So season 8 was a hardboiled PI spoof. I haven't actually watched it, yet, but I'm currently watching, and loving, season 9, known as Archer : Danger Island. It's a 1930s adventure spoof with Archer now a one-eyed, bumbling pilot in the South Pacific, his mother as a hotel owner, and co-owner of his plane, and the other characters in new roles as well (e.g. Pam, who's the agency's HR director in the spy series, is now Archer's mechanic/co-pilot). They are all hunting for a mysterious idol on the island for various reason. Archer want's it to sell it and get rich. A Nazi spy (the agency accountant in the spy series) wants it for the Reich, and so on. It's weird and wacky in all the best ways. Oh yeah, there's a talking, sentient parrot o_O (I did say it was weird:cool:).
 
Have just finished Ozark. As it is an area I have been I was quite interested in watching it

Kind if Deliverance meets the Hamptons. Meets the Godfather

Watching Bodyguard now. So far three shows in I like it

A bit disappointed with Ep. 7. They went with a "Dances with Wolves/Avatar" white guy saving non-white people from other white guys story. Perhaps it was meant to be parody, but they didn't parody that basic premise, which really needs a good parody given the inherent racism. I'd rather see it turned on his head, with Archer trying to be the white saviour but failing miserably, leading to the native chief picking up the slack and winning the battle as Archer looks around, bewildered by what's happening. Maybe that is what happens in episode 8, but I doubt it. That story seems to have wrapped at the end of episode 7.

Oh, and the natives worshipping the white woman seems rather racist, too.

While I realize they are trying to do a 1930s adventure movie and those tropes do fit in there, the racism needs to be either ditched or turned on its head. We really do not need to play that angle straight in the 21st century.

I really enjoyed the new Sabrina. I was a bit surprised about how dark it went, but they managed to take it there and also not take it too seriously at the same time.

I have my eye on it but Haunting of Hill House is ahead of it, I think. The problem is that a show like Haunting isn't something I can comfortably watch while exercising, my main TV watching time. It needs more focus than I give it when I'm on the bike, so lighter fare like Python or Archer tends to win out.
 
Watched the first season (only four episodes) of Castlevania. Based on a long-running horror-fantasy videogame series, it's likely not for everyone. However, it is a rarity in the world of videogame adaptations: a dramatic piece of storytelling that still packs in some seriously good action scenes (and, yes, gets a bit videogame-y at times but not enough to annoy me). I am not actually familiar with the games myself and thoroughly enjoyed it. Basic story is the last scion of a family of monster hunters that were excommunicated and forced into exile by a corrupt, power-hungry medieval church overcoming his hatred of humanity to save the land from Dracula, who has unleashed a demonic horde after the same church burned his beloved wife for witchcraft (she was actually studying advanced, for the time, science under Dracula's tutelage). Season two is longer and adds a new character (who is introduced in the finale of season one). I shall start it soon.
 
How long can the myth of Drac-ula drag on if the "c" is substituted with "x" or "g" presenting the learned lady of knowledge and wisdom ... soph ilyre than the booty of night ... an un-conscience creeping ... ahunting that bugs desires?

Thus eastern dragon lassies ... snippy as a third portion of de Moira! Perhaps t'morra we'll see it! I just don't know about it ... that follows Ides on the march ... tis primal some how!

Times fly as dark angels considering what was misty!
 
I watched “Collateral beauty” on Netflix- an unusual movie about a father who has lost his daughter and how his friends / colleagues help him to work through it in a very unusual way.
