Just to be clear, though, going into the Gently series expecting Adams will lead to disappointment, I think. His influence is there and that anarchic comic spirit shows through at times, but it's not a straight-up, faithful interpretation of Dirk Gently.

It takes the basic character and premise behind Gently, here played by English actor Samuel Barnett, with whom I am otherwise unfamiliar(a detective who uses intuition and following trails of coincidences and weird events to solve cases rather than using traditional methods like collecting clues) and spins a completely new story set in modern day Seattle (the original was set in the eighties when it was written).

My husband is watching this (it's too gristly for me) but I recognised Gently from The History Boys which I made a point to see after all the main cast (including James Corden) made appearances in The Lady in the Van.

Not about Netflix, but on topic-ish:
Douglas Adams performed the HHG series for audio book. It's delightful to hear the books read in his voice.

Comedy special. Mike Birbiglia - Thank God For Jokes

Thank me later.

Just don't watch Amy Schumer.

I like some Mike Birbiglia ("What I should have said was NOTHING") but didn't enjoy My Girlfriend's Boyfriend. I'll consider giving Thank God for Jokes a try. Then I'll thank you later.

Pinga recommended Shameless on Facebook a bit ago, so we tried it. It's great. And there are topless scenes. What's not to like?

I did. I had forgotten about this thread.
It is not for everyone, but, if you appreciate this kind of raw humour it is pretty funny.

The Crown has announced their season 2 release date - December 8. So I won't be scheduling anything for that weekend!

How was that? It's not high on my list of NF productions to watch (Stranger Things is top priority) but still curious. Sounds like you liked it, at least, if you're hankering for more.

I started watching Longmire on Netflix. Interesting thing is that I'm not really a fan of either westerns or crime dramas in particular - but really liked the characters and the general story arc. I finished the five seasons on netflix, and now have to wait for Season 6 to appear.

Netflix news that makes me sigh (but not cringe as of yet:

Netflix Orders TV Series Adaptation Of ‘The Haunting of Hill House’ Book From Mike Flanagan, Amblin TV & Paramount TV

Haunting of Hill House is one of my favorite novels of all time. Top 5 at least, maybe top 3. Maybe even number 1 depending on my mood. It is simply the most beautifully subtle and disturbing psychological ghost story ever written. There's never any doubt of the supernatural presence that is the house, but it's the characters and the impact of the haunting on them that is the real heart of the story.

The problem with doing another film/TV adaptation is that the 1963 film version directed by Robert Wise is near perfect. I love it. A moody, atmospheric haunted house story that more or less follows the book, at least in spirit. (The less said about the 1999 remake the better, though.)

So what is this TV series going to be like? If it maintains the subtle, psychological approach, that's great and I'll be on board. But if modernizing the story means adding jump scares and fx, as so often seems to be the case (and as happened with the 1999 film) with horror these days, then I'll take a pass.

I've just started watching Orange is the New Black. I know, late to the game. What a great show.

I enjoyed Crown too. I don't remember specifics because we watched similar shows around the same time. I'll check the season two.

We've also started Downton Abbey.....I now know what the hype is all about.

We got through 2 or 3 seasons of OitNB and then soured on it.

Waiting for the latest season of Archer to appear.

I am a monarchist and a royal watcher; I love our royal family. The 50s are my favourite fashion decade. And Netflix has proven that they can create some excellent original offerings (Stranger Things, Daredevil, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Grace and Frankie, Gilmore Girls, Arrested Development, Dirk Gently). I knew that The Crown was going to be right up my alley.

And I wasn't wrong. Most of all, it's so beautifully made with costumes and sets that make me weep with pleasure. Is that too extreme? So so beautiful. Plus the acting is great and the story is interesting even though we already know how it turns out. I'm sure it's not going to be everyone's cup of tea (high tea with finger sandwiches eaten with white-gloved hands), but I recommend it to everyone anyway. I can't think of one thing that I didn't like about it.
