If you could spend Christmas anywhere...

Haha, hmm, you may make me rethink my snowed in scenario. Might have to play outside a lot!
Some huge sand doons blow in, trapping you in the original scenario but with a large area of lots of things to do?

That's why the cruise for me. Time together, time apart, some private spaces but close enough to do some things together.

after some thought I'd choose a cruise to somewhere warm. Me-and my 3 offspring, Sisters(2) and their (each) 2 kids, 1 brother in law (that's all in the picture) and my 2 parents. How about suites for all of us 4 in a row. A cruise does all the cooking, it's neutral ground, a variety of activities to do ie swimming, snorkelling, reading. 8 days Christmas eve to Jan.1st would also take in Mom's birthday. Note: I did not invite nieces BF. And my middle child comes.

A very unlikely scenario but hey I was asked to dream....

I will actually be on a cruise ship for Christmas but not with any extended family, just me, Mrs. M and Teenage M. We did a resort once, too. I'm not sure if we could make a resort or cruise Christmas work for an extended family Christmas. Too many shift workers who sometimes have to work Christmas or Boxing Day.

Mendalla-it doesn't have to work in real life-it won't in my case-but it was a dream- a desire of my heart.
May the 3 of you enjoy your cruise.

My ideal Christmas demands a complete alteration in 'how things work in the real world'. I have had many wonderful family Christmases and now want an 'impossible' one.

This year I would like my entire family to be tele-transported, safely and simply to one location. My family live in several places in Canada and several places in Europe. I am the oldest and I haven't met some of the younger generation in Europe (neither have my partner and kids, grandkids).

It would be the ideal spot for each of us (some prefer snow, others warm sunshine and ocean waves, others want to see the Rockies). Possibly the powers that be in these events could arrange portals between ideal locations so individuals could pop back and forth? There would be something wonderful for each person to do in addition to enjoying family time. There would be lots of time to share family stories from way back and recently.

The magical transportation would be totally free, totally comfortable and pain free for the folks with health problems who can't handle travel. All accommodation would be totally suitable for the various people (and, of course) free.

if i could spend christmas anywhere

it'd be the family gathering with my mom

spending the morning making & eating pannekoek & yogurt & jam

then skiing all day

then gorging ourselves during the night and being sung to sleep with silent night sung by mom

In my real life, I don't want to spend Christmas anywhere but home . . . I just like being at home for Christmas - and whoever is here with us is fine with me. It will be my hubby, my daughter, my sis, and me, and for New Year's it will be the same four plus my son and girlfriend.

But, in a dream world - maybe just for one Christmas - we would go to a nice lodge for Christmas - the lodge and it's location would include all the winter sports - skiing, tobagganing, skating, ski-doing, etc. While I won't take part in any of those, it will be nice for the children.

I choose to separate my hubby's family and my family for the get-togethers. Not because they don't get along, but because for me it will be more enjoyable to enjoy my family separately and his family separately.

So, my family will gather for Christmas . . . we will arrive on the 23rd of December. On the 24th (in the large open gathering room) my hubby and I will host as it will be our 30th anniversary. Those mentioned above will all be there as well as my sis' daughter, husband, and three children. The gathering will be our presents . . . there will only be presents for the children. On Christmas Eve we will go to a Christmas Eve service. Perhaps walk to it, and when we return home there will be a light, fluffy, falling of snow. Christmas morning we will have a brunch, and then an early supper - I will cook, others will help. In the evening we will play games and visit (and do jigsaw puzzle of course). The days of the 26th, 27th and 28th will be a time of visiting and taking in whatever activities we choose to do. On the day of the 27th, two of my cousins and their husbands will join us for the day and evening.

On the 28th (my hubby and our children) we will go to Hawaii to gather for the season with my hubby's family - A sister, 3 adult children (one spouse) who have in total 11 children, a brother and wife, 2 adult children (one spouse) who have 2 children in total, and another sister and husband, and two adult children & spouses with 3 children in total. We will be staying at a private small resort here where we will all have our own individual cabins and gather in an very large common place with lots of rooms and activities places. We will gather for a "Christmas" gathering on the 29th, which will we will all contribute to the meal in some way. On the 3oth we will celebrate my SIL's 60th birthday, on the 31st we will have a new year's gathering. We will all return home on the evening of the 1st. We will visit and take in a variety of activities as we choose.

I have been thinking about this and haven't settled on what might be "perfect", but I know that I'd be much happier visiting my parents in December (whether for Christmas or New Year's) if they had less pets (I'm allergic) and the heat cranked up!

The stereotype is that older people like to keep their places warm like Florida - but there is a reason I call my mom's place an icestation. Sounds like your folks are the same.

Different families have different needs when it comes to the setting on the thermostat. At our house I've finally gotten Seelerman to agree to leaving it just around 20. Any higher and I am sweating and uncomfortable. When people visit I hope those who like it warmer wear warm clothes and bring sweaters - or I can provide afghans or wraps - and extra blankets for their beds. When I visit my sisters I take along short-sleeved cotton shirts and summer-weight slacks for indoor wear - they keep their houses so hot. And they are always asking me if I am warm enough. I also pile half the blankets on a chair, or at least fold them at the foot of the bed.

Whenever I mention that the house is too cold - my mom will always answer - "get a blanket." Well - getting a blanket would work well if I wanted to relax - or watch television - but it's not a good solution when I want to stay crisp and alert to study.

Wrapping a blanket around your feet, put a light sweather or flannel shirt on, and get back to work.

I was thinking about this more and I do have a fantasy Christmas that really is a fantasy: Christmas on the International Space Station. To wake up Christmas morning and climb into the cupola (where the astronauts do a lot of their photography of the Earth and where Chris Hadfield performed his part of the song "ISS: Is Somebody Singing?") to watch the Earth roll by as I contemplate the various meanings and reasons for the festivals of the season would be perfect.
