How was church today?

Welcome to Wondercafe2!

I missed church today because we had a family lunch here at the paradox house. It was planned for yesterday but rescheduled due to weather and road conditions. I might be able to see what took place on FB . . . will check.

Does your church normally take place during lunchtime?

We had a good service yesterday - the sermon being from John 3:1-15. The topic was being born again. A nice lunch followed, then sermon review and a short meeting to plan for Korean New Year fun in February. I'm to lead a couple of games.

Last Sunday for Rev. Sheena Trotter-Dennis as part of the Hillhurst ministry team. Will miss Sheena's perspective from the pulpit. She said she needed some space or maybe a mid-life crisis so she is taking a year of discernment. Said she will still be around Hillhurst in a volunteer capacity and will still preach if called upon. Was hard on us to lose Rev. Dr. Danielle Ayana-James a couple of years back and now this loss. I can understand how a place like Hillhurst can wear on a person, it is very busy. Anyway, wish Sheena all the best in her time of discernment and hopefully she finds some answers.

No but the time overlaps with the family arriving for lunch. We need to be mindful to finish up in time for the baby to get home for her nap.

To each their own.

We were always taught to put church first when scheduling activities.

First child? We were talking about this the other day and remembering how we tried to make life pleasant and orderly for our oldest. We were careful to keep the noise down during naps, and timed trips to the store around nap and meal times etc. etc. By the time we got to Child Four there wasn't a chance of keeping his life orderly and pleasant!

My daughter's first . . . the little one gets cranky if her nap is delayed too long.

As the fourth-born of four kids, finally NOW I begin to understand it all....

In my 55 or so years in churches of various kinds - including but not limited to United and Baptist - I've often seen little ones napping while the service was going on. Indeed, my church in Toronto has a crib in the basement for napping purposes.

So I did not go to church today. Opened the garage only to realize the plow had finally gone through. By the the time we dealt with the snow it was getting too late for the church we planned to attend.

Next week I may go to the UU fellowship. Haven't gone in a while and it's the minister's week to preach. I am still thinking that's really where I belong in terms of a faith group. Even a fairly progressive UCCan congregation like W-K doesn't really seem to be clicking with me.

I still haven't gone to any UU congregation but might go soon.
What do you think is the biggest difference between it and a progressive UCCan congregation?

I didn't go to church today, either. Even though I'm the pastor of 2 congregations.
Both of them cancelled their services this morning, due to extreme cold and poor road conditions. Safety came first.

The progressive UCCan churches around here are still recognizably Christian. They always have a Bible reading, talk about God and Jesus, have prayers, etc. The progressive is in what they believe about these things rather than whether they are present.

In a UU church, you could a Bible reading, but you could just as easily have a reading from another scripture (Koran, Gita, you name it), secular philosophy, a poem or other literary work, science readings, and so on. God may or may not be named. Jesus pops up from time to time, but generally as a mythical figure or maybe as a preacher/teacher. In short, Christian ideas are just one more set of ideas to be presented and discussed.

And what bothers you in the UCCan churches is the Jesus/God language or the service setting?
Sorry for so many questions, just a matter of real curiosity/interest.

Stay safe! Hope things get normal soon.

Neither. It's the fact that it's all Jesus/God all the time. Which makes sense in a Christian church, but isn't what I need. I am not inspired by sole source spirituality.

I am sure they do. I am not sure about the quality of your forgiveness if you keep playing the judge of others.

My loving correction is based on Scripture, "not forsaking our gathering together, as it is the custom to some men, but comforting, and by so much the more, by how much ye see the day approaching." - Hebrews 10:25 (WYC).

Worshipping God rightly takes precedent.
