How was church today?

I confess to having played hooky yesterday. It was the Baden Powell service, which means full parking lot, church full of kids, flag waving, no proper message. All very nice, especially if you have children, or had children who liked the Scouting/Guiding movement.

I remember participating in those. My family church sponsored (and still sponsors AFAIK) a major Scouting organization (the 24th Kitchener) with everything from Beavers up to Rovers (though we only went up to Scouts at the time I was in the group, Ventures and Rovers were started later). So B-P Sunday was always a big deal in the church calendar with a dinner, service, etc. happening over that weekend. We didn't have a guiding group in the church but invited one that wasn't based in a church to join us IIRC.

No observance of Baden Powell this year. Last year we had a young man and a young woman come to speak to us about the Scouting movement (now co-ed). It went over quite well. . . there was no flag waving.

We don't go to the lengths of a dinner, but there is cake after service, usually, which gets the little ankle biters even more wound up, lol. There's usually seven or eight groups represented, and they all have flags and banners, etc. Busy place, which is fine, but it's also nicely optional, and I free up a spot in the parking lot.

The dinner was usually earlier in Scouting Week, sometimes the Saturday night, but it was definitely part of the event and the minister was usually present to lead grace.

Well, the Minute for Mission talked about a single male going into a refugee camp. While living there he married and had a kid and his second will also be born in the camp. Well the point was that he was helping others etc. but a guy in the church got upset over this MfM and says he's not going back.

Hey Sterton - nice to see you again! It's been a while :-)

So do you know what this person's issue was with the story? Would be interesting to understand.

Is it uncommon for a gentle man to marry a po' Gael looking for sustenance, shelter and someone that would protect Ur ...?

Sme humbling may be required so the guy could look up at the underbelly of the BS institution! Minister used that sort of expression at a funeral I attended today ... for an unorthodox minister cousin of mine ... he always looked at religion differently than so do that take it as a way of life that must be hardly expressed to the pagans ... if you don't wish them to learn and question about reality and its temporal nature ...

Honouring February 22nd originated with Girl Guides in the UK during the early 1930's. They named it Thinking Day and set it aside to think of their sisters throughout the world. That date is the birthday of both Lord and Lady Baden Powell. Don't know the connection to Boy Scouts, so I can't spout about their presence at any special church services!

Yes, married life is super busy.

I talked with him and he doesn't like the fact that the guy is "adding to the problem" by having kids while he is without a home, food, medical care etc. This happens with non-refugees too.

I suspected that might be it Sterton. Guess refugees are meant to make birth control a priority, in his view. One refugee family whom our church sponsored had their third child while living in a camp - where they were actually living for many years - at least three, maybe 5 years I think. Hard for me to imagine. Another young woman we sponsored many years ago was 16 when we initiated sponsorship; by the time she arrived, she was 18 and had a 9 month old child with her ... not sure if she was raped, or what the circumstances were. She has been an amazing mom & that baby is now finishing high school.

My church is Hillhurst United in Calgary.

The name sounded familiar* so I just checked the church web site. Wow! Remind me to visit your church if I'm ever in Calgary (not likely, but who knows), and to recommend it if I know anyone moving to Calgary.

*I think we referred to it as an example of what was possible when we were in our Affirming process.

Cool. This is the one whose minister is author of "Fishing Tips"; ideas for fishing on the other side when congregation-building. We've been using it as a resource in some our long-term planning meetings.

The other side of what?

the boat jae - it's a scriptural reference I think, when Jesus told the budding disciples to cast their nets on the other side of the boat & they came up brimming with fish which surprised them a lot as they had been fishing for many hours without success.

It's an excellent book!

Thank you Carolla. I'm well aware of the illustration. What I was asking about is the author's application.

I keep seeing the wrong date for the first Sunday of Lent. Have you noticed they have been sayin Shrove Tues was last week?
