How was church today?

He didn't. He was ELCIC when he died (you didn't notice that I mentioned one of my encounters was his funeral?)...

No, sorry, I honestly didn't catch that.

...though with his dementia, he hadn't done more than attend services for a while before. I was already UU (or en route, at least) when he joined so it was never an option I considered. Dad, like me, grew up in the UCCan and remained there until he remarried, long after I was an adult and married myself.

Cool. Well, I'll let you know how the ELCIC goes for me. I am trying to go into the service with an open mind.

I'm surprised @Carolla Your conference meeting didn't include Sunday worship? I'm used to both BC and AB concluding Conference with sunday worship (where the newly comissioned and ordinands serve the elements)

Sermon today was looking at the Lord's Prayer line by line and examining what each line is really saying. Then the closing hymn was The Rainbow Song. Morphing from serious theology to the Kermit the Frog song is one reason I love this United Church of ours. Now when work gets bad this week I can just do the Kermit song in my head...the lovers, the dreamers and me. :)

It sounds like it would have been a good sermon.

While I like the song The Rainbow Connection, especially as sung by the Frog, in what way is it an appropriate song to be used in a Christian worship service?

The song speaks of possibility and inclusivity. In my books it doesn't get more Christian than that. Of course, my definition of Christian is based on how Jesus treated folks during his time of ministry. For me Christian and religious are often at odds. As mentioned in the original post the United Church is a good fit for me precisely because of rainbows and inclusivity along with thoughtful explication of teachings like The Lord's Prayer.

My broken ankle is healing -enough for me to drive to church yesterday. I had my moon boot in the passenger's side -so put that on to walk the final distance.
I was scheduled to give another of my Faith and Mental Health talks. I eyed the box under the pulpit that you step up onto - and thought -with some help from the man who sits behind me in church (and just happens to have huge biceps!) it was doable.
So, armed with my walking sick on one side, and Mr. Biceps on the other, I got to the pulpit.
I looked down at the somewhat mortified faces - threw my walking stick down, and announced "Another miracle!".........

Oh, and the talk went well.

Make the circle wide ... goes against tautological tenseness ... and the loop closes us ... make what you can of it ... draw it out?

Okay, if it floats your boat. For me, I prefer songs in church to, you know, actually speak of God, Christ, salvation, redemption... things like that.

Today's service was led by the choir and the choir director spoke about Hallelujah and music in general used in praise and in mourning. He told of funerals in New Orleans where the procession to the cemetery mourns, and the people return to from the grave site singing "When the Saints Go Marching In". And there in the middle of the message he invited the congregation to spontaniously burst out with the chorus of that song.
Different and delightful, for a change in pace while the ministers were at Conference.

Just finished Tillich's tome ... on Systematic Theology ... I liked the closing where he said that people that were fixed on God the Father in existence would get hung up on avarice and control freaks ... the lessor powers are thus out ... forming the fringe of the circle as objective vision in the round!

Some just can't square up with such inclusivity ... they love to create trash of all hues ... makes me blue ... and thus onyx in the ruah ... we'll hammer it out ... BB Radiator theme ... that free in essence? Those who lost have a belief that such contemplation stinks .. and systematic Romans say thinking men are dangerous ... but only if care less in the other essence!

No - no worship on Sunday at Conference. The morning is occupied with a business meeting & I think the proceedings wrap up around 12:30 (I left early due to conflict in date with another event). But communion & worship briefly on Friday; Youth service in the AM and Ordination Service in the PM on Saturday, at which the new minister served communion. So actually 3 worship services! But just not on Sunday.

At Conference, as part of one of the worship services, Friday I think, we heard this dramatic dialogue re the Lord's Prayer - you might find it interesting too ... http://www.raesmith.com/the_lords_prayer_conversation_with_god.htm

So... a church conference without church at the conference. Were delegates at least able to visit a local house of worship to participate in a service there?

Three worship services! Wonderful Carolla

Interesting how two different people took different meanings from @Carolla's post.

What did Carolla actually say?

If there were three different services to go to, does it matter if none of them was on Sunday? Sounds to me like there was plenty of church at the church conference.

Sunday is the Lord's Day. That's important to most followers of the Lord. Guess not to all.

Is it? The Sabbath is supposed to be the seventh day. I do not recall any scriptural basis to moving it to the first, much as there is none for having Christmas on the 25th of December. It was an evolution of church practice rather than something mandated in Scripture.

Er... there was this little event known as the Resurrection. ;)

Thanks for explaining Carolla. That's quite different than BC and ABNW Conference. They do have worship every day but also a bif sunday service.
@Jae moving the sabbath-or Lord's day to sunday is not biblical it is historiacal. It was done after Bible times. Jeesh-I thought you studied church history....
