I think Southwestern Ontario may finally be into Spring for good. Today was lovely and even frost seems to have vanished from the forecast. However, our deck boxes are kind of falling apart (the only place we do annuals) so not sure if Mrs. M is going to try to plant them or not.

Lots of my tomato plants look dead, how come?
Assuming they are outdoors - Possibly still too cold? Even when the air warms up it can take the soil a while to catch up. Mine are still under lights - but just for one more day! Then I'm going to start hardening them off & put them outdoors hopefully next weekend. Some of them are starting to bloom!!

Yes obviously too cold this past week not just borderline. Some just don't liok at how sensitive they are to cold? I get newbies learning but there are some very basics that looking at pretty much any veggie garden resource shares.

I have never bothered starting nasturtiums inside. I don't find they love transplanting. I just tuck a couple of seeds into each planter as I put them together.

Warmer in colllingwood. I put my potatoes in, beans, second planting of lettuces. But it has been so cold we are about a month behind when I compare to my garden diary last year. Asparagus still not big enough to cut

but trees now have little pea size leaves on them so spring in finally going to arrive, before we hit summer

Added another group of carrots and more onions. The ones from two weeks ago have sprouted!

asparagus is up, picked once so far. rhubarb is getting bigger daily Soon I will be overwhelmed by it I know

my bed I reserved for tree seeds has three horse chestnuts, about six inches tall and in leaf. One other odd little red plant. Which could be a weEd could be a tree seed
a lot of trees I blossom or very close

I have potted up my tomatoes - man they are BIG!! and blooming already!! I am still hardening them off - poor things got a bit of sunburn on their lower leaves - sorry fellas! So moving them around in and out of the sun & shade ... keeps me busy! Today I put 3 of the biggest pots on a wheeled dolly to make this easier.

I went to our local independent greenhouse today to pick up some annuals - sheesh - costly! But I do like what she grows (has lots which is not easily found elsewhere) and I prefer to support a family owned & operated local business, rather than a cheaper big box store. Tomorrow we will get the table & umbrella onto the deck (now that the tomato plants have moved!) - weather is amazing - summer seems to be here.

Interesting to read about the Ontario farmers who grow flowers and supply Ontario grocery stores...... they are in dire straights. Green houses full of plants for Mother’s Day that are now compost as no one was out and buying. So I think no matter where you buy plants you are supporting Ontario businesses

and interesting how many of these farmers are Dutch in background

So windy here today! And cold forecast for tonight - I just moved my big pots of tomatoes & peppers into the garage - for shelter from the wind & tonight for shelter from the cold! Apparently tomatoes, peppers & cucumbers (ie heat lovers) can be stunted if temps fall below 10 - 12C .

In Alberta we tend not to worry about that!

We have baby haskaps, nesting birds, flowering plants. Must be spring.

Yesterday hubby and I went out to walk a trail and enjoy a home made burger. Our wee dog found a pile of human poop and rolled in it. Gross. Lengthy bath and brush followed, Today I did some more bathing and gave him a hair cut. Does anyone know why dogs seem to delight in covering themselves in stench?

@BetteTheRed @Carolla @KayTheCurler - probably forgot to tag someone else who would know.

Garlic scapes - mine are already past where I would have harvested. Probably will be about a week before I make pesto. What's better, pull them off now and just freeze them as is or leave them on the plants for a week?

If you're going to make pesto, take them off soonest, blanch them and freeze them, then pesto when you have a minute, I think.

Take them off. They will stay fine in fridge

made a good pesto last week. Half scapes half kale with Parmesan and olive oil. more muted than just scapes

also cut them into 2 inch pieces and stir fry scapes.

How is everyone’s garden coming along I have had my first beans, tiny tomatoes are growing, have dug a few new potatoes, lots of lettuce

and now with so much heat I feel like things grow as I am weeding Around them
