There is something called 'microclover' too - I have been seeding some challenging areas of my lawn with it & it has taken quite well. Micro Clover Seed Pelleted

In terms of overall lawn rejuvenation - you might want to get somebody to come & aerate it (they use a machine that cuts out plugs of soil - it ends up looking like goose poop all over your lawn!) This reduces soil compaction. Then you could rake a thin layer of topsil, triple mix etc over the whole lawn - this will add nutrients to the soil.

Lawns grow most in cooler weather - so right now is a good time to do the work or add seeds. Note - if you seed - you have to be diligent about keeping the top layer of soil moist with a quick gentle spray usually 2x/day until it get gets going.

I transplanted a bunch more seedlings into pots today - so now it's a big game of tetris to figure out where to put everything until it can go outside!!

There is also grass seed for shade. It is usually a bit harder to find but your local garden shop or hard ware store should be able to get it

Grass is a bad thing for sure. Waste of water, too much fertilizer use.....

but switching a lawn to perennials is a lot of work. People think perennials just keep coming up but they don’t. They need splitting and trimming and dead heading. And weeds take over if you aren’t. Careful. I have seen too many lawn conversions look lovely for one year and then look like a jungle

We had a yard near here that did the meadow thing. Basically, no grass or cultivated beds, just native plants. I assume they kept an eye out for ragweed and others of its ilk, but I don't know that for sure. Didn't change until they moved away so I guess no one complained or it was kept "legal". We have a few others that have done the "English Garden". I know for a fact some of them are using landscaping services because I see the trucks there, which is one way to avoid the "second year jungle" if you have $$$ and are willing to spend them.

Frankly, my lawn looks like s**t and is probably half "ground cover" (ie. perennial weeds). I thought I might get a landscaper to fix it up this year but that, like a lot of jobs, is going to wait for things to quiet down. And, of course, there's a lot of pools around here which eliminates the backyard in a lot of properties once you factor in the deck, a poolhouse for storage, and such. Unless you're the guy to the southwest of me. His yard is so big, he put in a pool with a combination storage and change room and still had room for a rink in winter. He's in an odd corner, though. Most yards around here are probably half or less that size.

Apparently, one can overdo gardening. And apparently being a rock star with a doctorate in astrophysics does not mean you can't enjoy a little time in your garden now and then.

Not strictly 'gardening' but definitely connected................
Yesterday while taking a break in the back yard I heard (several times), then saw a humming bird. Likely a month too early, there are almost no blooms anywhere - none at all in my yard. In a moment of soft heartedness I braved my partner's ridicule and set out a feeder with some nice fresh sugar water.

I'm curious to know what his actual injury is that he was hospitalized.

In the original Instagram post, May said he "ripped his gluteus maximus to shreds" so a badly torn glute it seems.
Seems like an odd muscle to have a tear so bad that actually needs surgery or something though where hospitalization is required.

Perhaps he was digging out rocks?

woke to my garden under snow. It’s the middle of May! My gnome under the snow trying to woke with the rhubarb

such an interesting angle from which to photograph an iris! thanks for that.
Ridiculous weather here - put our planters into the garage last night & covered some other things. There was frost on the car with my mate got up this morning. It's been sun, cloud, snow, ice pellets, and lots of wind throughout today. Good grief - enough already with the polar vortex nonsense!

Yes, if the weather keeps like this, I might need to figure out something for starting plants inside, wheeing them out during the day and wheeling them back at night. The problem is that they also need to be covered when inside so that the cat doesn’t dig in the pots or chew the plants. A mini greenhouse on wheels of sorts.

We just call it May here haha.
Ooooh so many new gardeners this year. Lots of my tomato plants look dead, how come?
