Covid 19 Vaccine

You're in Ontario, aren't you? Our pharmacies only have AZ right now. Pfizer and Moderna are going to the mass clinics run by hospitals and health units, mobile clinics doing care facilities, and that sort of thing. Or so it has been so far. I am hearing buzz about that changing now that there's a steady supply of Pfizer coming in.

That's the way it is in BC

Here it's pretty much every pharmacy has a vaccine, but only 1 type at each pharmacy from what I have seen.

*sigh* Spoke to someone who lives nearby and would be ahead of me for booking. She hasn't heard from the pharmacies so went with an AHS clinic, convinced me to do the same. I can't even get an appointment within the city, I am booked 2 weeks out, outside of the city.

The booking process seems to be wonky all around. It is shocking that they are so clumsy in this day of mass communications even considering the massive scope of this.

It's frustrating for sure. I suspect because the pharmacy deliveries aren't guaranteed they just book appointments based on what they have. I wonder if they go by birth year instead of first come first serve too, may depend on the individual pharmacy.
The city was fully booked through AHS already, that's why I'm out in Camrose. That may change as people are probably like me, trying to get into a pharmacy as well.

It's just all over the place with the plans on 2nd doses. I get that it's based on availability, but even the timing, why delay Pfizer and Moderna and not AstraZeneca? AZ's plan is on it's schedule for data.

Have you read any of the studies related to cancer patients and the vaccine? Another science friend suggested there were more ways to measure the immune response than what one group used in a study.

Finally ontario is taking some needed steps to tackle hot spots. Certain postal codes can get vaccines for anyone over 18

my son and his wife live in one of those postal code areas. Not sure how they will get registered but it should mean they can get a shot fairly soon

unfortunately my daughter does not live in one of the hot spot postal codes so she has to wait. I expect that is going to be an emotional issue for her. the rest of us having gotten one shot but not her

it feels like at every turn there is good news and bad news

Do present administrations have trouble with planning, plotting, organizing and other schemes that might be mislabelled conspiracies? Could be a just theory given what we are unsure of ... yet some will say they are thoroughly determined!

Imagine unthinking such schemes ... once these are driven into your head by indoctrination!

I have.
The issue is lack of data, the delay isn't based on evidence for what happens with the 2nd doses at that interval.
And it just seems random Pfizer Moderna and AstraZeneca all have different schedules but we are using 1 for all of them in populations we are doing a delayed schedule. Those getting AstraZeneca aren't on a delay though why not? If the goal was to get everyone 1 shot asap there were also other options to stretch what was received further and that wasn't done. Ie. Smaller amounts to populations with greater immune responses.

My health unit vaccination submission automatically booked my second one for four months after the first.

My e-mail with the QR code included the date and time of both appointments.
Cool. Is Barrie (or whatever your health unit is called) using their own system or the provincial system? London has its own, which seems to work fairly well. I had no trouble navigating it at least.

This is the first I've heard of no delay for AZ. Maybe that's an AB thing.

Interesting.

Apparently Ontario (or many regions in ON) are giving people like me the second dose at the shorter recommended time. It will be interesting to see whether other provinces follow suit.

There's a list on MLHU's eligibility site of who is getting dose 2 on the regular schedule. I copied it to the quote block below.

Given the scarce vaccine supply, the Province has directed the following:

  • All second doses for the following individuals will be delivered at the intervals described in the product monographs:
    • Residents of long-term care, retirement and First Nations elder care homes.
    • Indigenous people living on reserve.
    • Transplant recipients.
    • Individuals with malignant hematologic disorders and non-hematologic malignant solid tumours.
  • All second-doses for all other groups will be scheduled at 112 days after their first dose.

Sorry, AZ schedule is 12 weeks, so 16 is a delay, still though delay by 33% vs more than 400% for when it should be 21 days for another.
