And a post I just did in the world-building thread on Storiesspace.com where I talk about some of my thoughts as I start fleshing out the religion of the Tana-verse. With two characters in the new story/ies being clergy, I need to firm up the faith beyond calling them the Denith Lorn and saying they can ask blessings that actually have tangible results.

So, I have hit a bit of a quandry.

I killed off a character that I did not mean to kill off. In fact, the scene was supposed to end with another character healing her from a seemingly mortal wound through a bond with an angel (well, my fantasy world's angel-analogue). But somehow, as I wrote, I went off-script and let her die. Which did work well dramatically, but it puts a bit of a wrench in the future of the story I am building since I had been assuming three protagonists and now, if I stick with this, I will be down to two.

And there's going to be consequences, too, that I have to work through. This isn't going to be like a lot of old TV shows where someone dies and things kind of carry on after a moment or two of shock and mourning. If I am going to have death and grief, I bloody well want to explore those themes in the story. One of the remaining protagonists is the deceased's mentor, responsible for both her education and her safety. So probably looking at a serious shitstorm when she returns home without her. The other is the deceased's lover, whose grief is compounded by the fact that she died saving him. Which could make for some interesting character development for both, but that isn't necessarily where I was planning to go with this story.

So I'm revisiting and revising to see what I can do with the original plan. The healing scene is written and I think I did a good job of making it dramatic while accomplishing the goal of her not dying of her wounds. And the miraculous nature of her survival can be something I can work with for both her and for the character who healed her.

Still, I actually kind of like the death version and have already put some thought into how the story picks up from the others grieving by her grave, which is where things end right now. Also, I've never killed a major character before, so there's a certain amount of getting into some new ground involved.

So, does this character live or die? I am not really sure right now.

So we learn of badness ... in latency because of lack of prescience! Regardless it is just words ... that's all! Humble they find themselves in relief ... on the Wahl! The horizontal is abstract ...
 
Well, this thread has been dormant for a while. Mostly because my writing has been. I mean, I am working on some stuff but nothing that seems to be going anywhere. However, Stories Space has a new competition up and I am going to take a go at it. Think of it as trying to jumpstart my writing engine. It's a picture competition, so there are two pictures to choose from, and then you just write a thousand-word maximum story inspired in some way by that picture. Both pictures are winter-related, one a winter scene and one a close-up of some snowflakes. And, of course, you are supposed to use the picture chosen as the cover image for the story. Here's the info for anyone else who might want to take a stab at it.

Funny I was just thinking about a fictional story about trees in while I was driving in the car the other day. Trees that have evolved to the point that their roots enable them to walk...weird huh?
So yeah, I would write about the pic with those trees by the river.

The ents were humanoid, for sure. In fact, I think it's stated somewhere that trolls were created as a kind of monstrous opposite to them (trolls being made of stone rather than plants). Something more alien and treelike could be fun.

There's lots of monster trees in horror and fantasy but they are usually just normal, stationary trees that have an evil entity hiding in them or something. They don't usually walk, though some use their branches as arms.

IIRC, Brian Aldiss' Hothouse (1960s or 70s s-f) had humanoid beings who were actually evolved from plants. It's set in the very far future and humans as we know them were long since extinct. The plant people were the new dominant sapient species.

That happens a lot, too. The ents being the big example (they are good and help the heroes by demonstrating what root erosion sped up can do to an "impregnable" fortress). And the "evil" trees are sometimes only "evil" from the human perspective. In court, they'd be pleading self-defense, let's just put it that way. :giggle:

An unexpected competition win today. My NSFW (yes, I occasionally still write smut) had an unofficial holiday competition. 100 words or less, had to be linked to Christmas or New Year's with a suitable cover image, US$100 prize, no runner-up prizes. And my entry won. As usual, I shall refrain from linking to that site here per our rules, "There is zero tolerance for pornography, sexually explicit content, and depictions of graphic or gratuitous violence" but will share privately if you ask nicely. Basically, I went all Rod Serling on this one and the twist ending clinched it.

New competition is up on Stories Space and I am, I hope, there with bells on. It's a Mardi Gras theme and coincidentally, I was in the Mardi Gras exhibit at the Louisiana State Museum just this past Tuesday. Minimum 1000 words, no specified maximum but the site has a max of 10,000 words. Cash prizes for the top 3 as usual.

My first random thought was something supernatural and gothic but that's a bit too Anne Rice. Probably need to come up with something more original.
