Hawaii has the advantage of being a full state, so has representation in both houses and votes for President. Part of Puerto Rico's problem was lack of pull in Washington DC and therefore lack of concern in Washington DC. So I suspect Hawaii will fare better, but let's not forget Katrina. Louisiana had full statehood and it was still a nightmare.
Disasters like hurricanes and wildfires are nightmares, regardless of full statehood or not. But Puerto Rico's main obstacle was "someone" occupying the White House at that time, who didn't like Puertoricanos, and who was rumored to have once wondered out loud who the President of Puerto Rico was. Thank heaven that 'Individual One' found it in their heart to go toss out rolls of paper towels to help with the cleanup. Bush never did THAT during Katrina, now, did he? (sarcasm alert)

Residents association decided the fireworks for the neighbourhood wouldn't be on Canada Day anymore, for a few reasons. So they put them with the summer carnival, which was today.
We decided to stay out of the gates for a quick retreat to be able to walk home and not be stuck in a large crowd with everyone leaving all at once. Good thing! Something went wrong, we were confused with where we were there didn't seem to be a grand finale and the music that was part of the display was still going - everything normally tends to get shut down fast to encourage people to leave quickly once it's over. We didn't have a view of the beach, turns out some went off straight to the beach area and more landed in the water having not gone off and the went off even further into the beach and crowd. Saw the videos after. Scary! A few things were set on fire, at least one chair, luckily with the sand and water things were extinguished quickly. No ambulances, but definitely some injuries and I suspect based on seeing it a number of people will have a little burn mark on skin or clothes similar to when a firepit spits off some embers.

It seems a bit odd, we were so close, didn't make out screams from the general noise but the speakers were between us and the beach. One person inside did run over saying someone got burnt, we assumed something minor in the launch area. Unfortunately this is a big thing for kids, so lots of fairly young kids who were in the area. Hopefully everyone is ok now. I will definitely be more thoughtful about my location for a fireworks display!

We heard more fireworks once we were home, someone decided to set some off illegally, I guess due to the show being cut short.

A brief break from the news is not shutting out bad news.

I've just made some hummous and am back to reading my book.

And yet I know a number of people that refuse to watch any news today because it is depressing! Some of these are well educated folk that seem to be avoiding something that forms a sign, or icon that should be noted ... if only for the need of dropping toilet paper rolls for assistance of those in need ... no more? (sarcasm alert?) Is sarcasm a sign from the great unknown, or unknowing when information is painful and depressing?

Is denial a laid out method of omission and thus generally unseen, unnoted, or just ignored? Imagine the things that great powers overlook while overseeing ... onus?

Is such action a move towards a greater loss of sentient Can ignorance expand spontaneously without thoughtful input? Then folk say; "is he talking insanely about madness in crowds?" Is this a mob thing ...

Good morning! Clean gutters, phone games, finished books, concerns for those affected by human or natural disasters, fireworks and music on the beach, hearing news reports, lots going on this weekend. We invite you to pause when you have a chance, join us round the Coffee Cart, grab a hot beverage, and share in the conversation. All is ready.

Got ta get a street cleaner ... like a brute leader ... thus the way is cleared ... and everything is swept aside! Raises the question about draining swamps ...

We celebrated our 39th wedding anniversary yesterday with dinner out at a favourite restaurant. I sure can't eat the way I used to! I was in pain from trying to finish my fish dinner...had to leave some on the plate. The waiter was a super nice guy, and helped to make it a fun evening. But the cost of it? Well, good thing anniversaries are only once a year.

Which beach was this at?

B's birthday is this coming week and I did not get her a gift yet it will be in the middle of a four day camping trip to Rideau River PP. Today to an aet show in Van Kleek Hill.

Do you have room in your head folks for this:
... a question was asked why we don't have a national forest fire force?

Can you imagine the fight ensuing between the federalists and anti federalists and those fighting to be federal ministers for some unspoken advantage?

I am told that such challengers are a game for those that do not understand the damage done to the human resource as the conflict warms up to eruption ...

In the end the worms are the only one with the advantage if you can worm your way through that understanding ... there has to be a greater reason yet beyond us constructing and overhead function ... klothos? Mores unknown ... or to be that way as sols scatter! Imagine metaphors for Armageddon ...

I can't believe the cost of a meal out - especially after taxes and a 15% tip (which is the starting rate on the debit machine here).
I agree you couldn't make meals out a regular thing - particularly on just a pension.

The other thing that is expensive is accomodation. Hospital is 40min from persons home, so we will be staying in hotels on the way there, and whilst supporting the person.

Looked for other options but it's considered cottage country so prime rate for air bnb

Maybe totally off-the-wall, but is a small RV rental an option?

Great idea.

Just checked though, and initate checks show about $150 US / night for a compact. Plus you then pay trailer site charges, so not really a savings.

oooh, found a hotel, more expensive but within 3 miles of hospital -- that's a win, they have a shuttle, etc, so....much easier

edit: dang, wrong location.
