AZ is a live vaccine.
 
I am stunned she was told to come back. I thought we all had to wait four months because of shortage. Maybe they meant four months?

Not everyone. Here there are specific groups that are still on the recommended dosing schedule (don't have the list handy but it's on the MLHU vaccine eligibility website) though the groups being done purely by age are 4 months (e.g. my wife). That's for the Pfizer/Moderna being given by the health unit, though. Not sure about the pharmacy AZ.

BC has so far not modified the schedule so some people can get the second dose sooner. I was shocked that my friend was told she could get her second dose so quickly
 
Interesting article. I agree the potential connection to HIT is important - especially from a treatment perspective. Heparin is still widely used, despite the very rare (fortunately!) DIC response - but its known and recognizable now, so heparin use continues. But recognizing this possible connection provides a different pathway for treatment should clotting occur. I don't get why you would be ticked that someone else has a different date for a different vaccine?

What am I missing?
If you are vaccinated, then you have some element of protection. By all counts, a pretty darn high protection level. At present, there is still discussion if we will need a 3rd. Also, until we have a large portion of the population vaccinated, life isn't going to change much.
So.....what am I not getting?

If you're talking about me it's because BC is firm about a four month interval. This is an anomaly that needs an explanation.

That is for the majority. Emerging evidence suggests that some of us get minimal protection from one dose. We need the second dose to get protection apparently. Some regions in Ontario are giving this group the second dose at the recommended 3 to 4 week interval.

That's what you're missing if you're asking me.
 
And the 3-4 week timeframe for AZ doesn't even make sense, as 12 weeks has been shown to be most effective for it. I think it may possibly just trying to use what they have and maybe same issue as here with the hesitancy?

@Northwind I wouldn't be surprised though if your friend's appointment changes *unless she got dose 2 already). ON has already included people in their 40s for getting AZ and NACI apparently will update their recommendations on Tuesday, so other provinces will probably follow suit.

I wouldn't be surprised if we see changes to how the 2nd doses of Pfizer and Moderna are being given to certain populations, and that would include people like Northwind.
In AB those in LTC didn't have a delay at all in their 2nd dose, as due to their high level of risk it was seen better to get them their 2nd dose than others their 1st dose sooner.

I think we will likely see people who have had transplants, certain immunodeficiencies and certain cancer/treatment be getting their 2nd doses before 16 weeks. Likely a bit of differing policies across provinces.

It's not just about how much protection these people have from 1 dose, that's a factor. There is also the concern their immunity may drop off faster, so waiting on that 2nd dose may not protect them as well than if they get their 2nd dose sooner - that is something we don't know yet.
 
I would also be annoyed if I found out that someone like Chemguy or my Mom could get their 2nd dose on schedule, but I was stuck waiting for the 16 week delay, consdering our risk levels. So I understand @Northwind feelings on that.
 
@Northwind - curious how AZ is working there and if you even had the choice (assuming you didn't lie).
Here it was funny. In March, with the set that was to expire soon, the health conditions for phase 2B weren't figured out yet. So anyone who was 55+ could book an appointment for it, but it was recommended that if they had a serious health condition they wait, although totally their choice.

Now it is no longer a choice, if someone has a health condition in 2B they aren't allowed to get AZ (although I imagine they make some exceptions if someone has a PEG allergy or something like that).

So if you lived here, in March would have been your choice to book in for AstraZeneca or wait a bit longer for Pfizer/Moderna. Now though, you would have to book for a place with Pfizer/Moderna. You couldn't go to the walk in clinic for AZ or use a pharmacy with AZ.

My friend has to make an appointment for the second dose so we'll see. She will also be on the mainland then so may get a different story from the pharmacist where she will be then.

They changed the dosing schedule when they were in the middle of doing the LTC's here. The people who got their first shots after that date had to wait four months for the second as far as I know.

I'm not sure. I didn't even check into that. My oncologist said to get whichever one I was offered. I'm not sure whether the AZ was approved when we talked about that.

From what I recall AZ came right after you appointment based on our discussion. I just wonder what the rules are there (which may be different than what your doctor recommends).
