There was no lockdown until the quarantine failed. If NSW had not stuffed up the cruise ship arrivals - and Victoria the overseas flights quarantine - there would have been no need for lockdown. The question I would have for the decision makers would be why not do the quarantine then for those coming in from abroad, some restrictions for everyone else instead of a lockdown? From what I understood the equivalent of one of our provinces was put into lockdown - maybe I'm incorrect in my understanding.
Lockdown for the general public just seems to have a lot of other risks tied into it. Cure being worse than the disease type of situation.
Some might see it as an over-reaction -but when you are an island continent you have a very good chance - more so than most countries - of keeping infection numbers to a minimum. This is what we have now done -and now lockdown is over due to it's success. From an Aussie perspective I I would rather put up with the inconvenience of a lockdown and have more of my fellow elderly and vulnerable citizens survive.
The government has supported those in employment -and the unemployed - with wage subsidies.
Financially, despite this, it's the younger folks (not retired like me) who have had to sacrifice so much financially. I hope when this is over we oldies will remember this, and the sacrifices the younger member of our country have made for our health, and support programmes that benefit them.
