How was church today?

Welcome to Wondercafe2!

A community where we discuss, share, and have some fun together. Join today and become a part of it!

You can, if there's like almost a hundred extra slices, and it's lemon meringue and pumpkin, neither of which 'keep' well. Fortunately, our congregation are fond-ish of pie, so selling slices for $1 on Sunday morning worked to deplete the inventory back to two whole pies, which also sold.

Hoarding was thus undone by the hosts ...

We did a joint service with the Lutheran congregation we share the building with - for Reformation Sunday. It was a formal order of service (not like our congregation). The first hymn was Tree of Life, which, of course, brought to mind the tragedy in Pittsburgh, which we later prayed for, as well as other suffering near and far. It was a nice service. Lots of recited prayers, and lots of hymns. A musical ensemble from our congregation played classical string and piano accompaniment - different from their usual style. They're quite talented and adaptable. I was impressed. Our main pastor discussed the Prodigal Son, our other pastor read from Romans -the Lutheran minister discussed Martin Luther briefly. But the theme running throughout was unity and Grace. Communion was served.

Then we had a luncheon after.

Tonight is a casual jam session with our congregation. I might go, just to hang out and listen/ sing along.

We attended a nice service at a megachurch in Suwon. The church gets about 20,000 worshippers each week, but the English worship service we were at had about 45 there.

The church was evangelucal and conservative, but too attractional for my tastes. Still, it was a good worship with nice songs, message and testimonies. It was a kind of homecomjng service for them and they gave out gifts of soaps and toothpastes to all the newcomers.

They were going to have a meal together after the service, but Yobo and I left before that as we were going to her brother's place for pizza.

Sermon today was by Harlan Pruden, a two spirited person from the Cree First Nation. The scripture was from the Cree oral tradition and was about how Creator thought the world into being and then went away. The world was then in chaos with no connection to Creator so a lowly tobacco weed volunteered to sacrifice itself as an intermediary between Creator and Created. Sermon was about how we need to move beyond dualism of us versus them and find the common thread that runs through all of us. A good day to be in worship and as Harlan explained, the story he told may be interpreted differently by each person who hears it and that is as it should be. :) No mention of The Reformation, but maybe a glimpse at ongoing Reformation as we continue to hear from alternative perspectives at Hillhurst. Maybe some Sunday we will get to hear from Greta Vosper....:):)

We also learned a new Latin phrase: semper reformanda. Always reforming. The point being that the church is always reforming.
The church at its best should be always reforming. Alas, some churches think they have it all figured out and they refuse to let in any doubt and they insist that their version is the only version. Some folks worship the bible instead of the inspiration behind the stories of the bible. I have always liked exploring whether on my bike rides or in my spiritual life so bring on the semper reformanda I say. :)

The church at its best should always be reforming, as reform is warranted. It would be grave error for the church to just accept whatever whim or notion for change came along. Great discernment is called for.

Yes, discernment is needed, but so is exploration. Guess I'm enough of an explorer to want to have a multitude of options to discern from. Cool to see you again Jae, your presence has been missed here. :)

Thus we question what that stone was for ... as it crumbled in the desert winds and sans ... all things can creep if watched over time ...

Our church situation right now is in limbo. Simply put, our denomination, Fellowship.ca - Welcome does not exist here in South Korea. Neither does Yobo's earlier denom of the PCC. There's a Korean church here in town that does simultaneous translation in English, though we've heard that the translation is substantially lacking.

Interpretation is something else ...
