Personally, I don't think it is any big deal whether Jae discusses this here or elsewhere. The "gifts and free hotel stays" line doesn't seem to be getting a lot of response and it might not merit a thread of its own. Up to Jae, I guess, if he has anything more to say about it.

Perks? Gifts? Hotel stays?
Of course different Conferences do things differently, but see my post #8705 about free hotel stays - sleeping in a college dorm room (shared) with a shared bathroom down the hall, eating in a college cafeteria. Perk?
Gifts? Never heard of any - unless they give you a pencil to take notes/
Perks? meeting new people and old friends; keeping up to date on what's happening in the church, opportunity to contribute

I agree, if we are going to discuss this further it should be moved from Room for All.
 
Worn out today. Big wind storm. We had notice so spent time yesterday removing things from the yard, covering some things, weighing them down, etc. Chemguy moved the BBQ against the house instead of being perpendicular to it. I guess he didn't lock the wheels though, once good wind gust pushed it off the deck. We'll need to get a new propane gauge, hopefully that will be it for damage. No downed trees that I've noticed nearby, have heard from others in and around the city though. We will have to do some cleanup as there are some branches in our yard, none from our trees as far as I can tell from the window.
 
Wow - that's some strong wind to push the BBQ! Glad there was no more serious damage.

In my neck of the woods - the fabulous perfume of blooming lilacs is wafting through the yard, and rhubarb is cooking on the stove - definite signs of early summer, even though the weather is still rather cool. Some rain in the forecast for tomorrow. Lake Ontario is apparently 75cm above normal at this time - overflowing it's banks in so many places - so I hope not too much rain falls.

These are not normative perks given to Presbyters.

I have seen gifts given to long serving Presbyters when they eventually step down.

I have seen Presbyteries provide financial assistance to Presbyters undertaking missions or exposure trips.

I have seen Presbyteries book blocks of hotel rooms so that Presbyters can get discounted rates.

Being a Presbyter is a calling to service not an invitation to be served.

Because of a sense of giving to a social civilization ... those in it for other reasons go elsewhere ...

Albeit sometimes you have to break away for a while when you find so many moles and infiltrators that are there for salvation of private self alone ... a flaw or human frailty ...

Sometimes the accrued self's cause a stink ... thus PEWs!

It is always what's in it for me ... generally not fecund stuff for some minds ...
 
Never received "gifts." In 25 years my current congregation is the first to pay for my hotel room - and it ain't the Royal York or the Chateau Laurier. Basically a bed to crash in. So don't assume it's luxurious.

By the way, I see no reason to move anything.
 
Feeling relieved.

My to do list has been long and full of many different things but I dropped off my stuff for my canoe trip down the Sunshine Coast in June (very exciting we go through Skookumchuck Rapids).. My minister is driving to the coast for Conference today and can drop it off at my uncle's. I'll pick it up mid-month when I fly to Vancouver after my sister's wedding in Ontario.


One more tablecloth to hem for that sister's wedding and all 18 will be done

Tabitha - busy,busy, busy! You have an interesting summer lined up.

Today is damp and cold - high expected of 14 - I'll need a jacket if I go out. Yesterday it rained, and the high was 8 degrees.
Hard to believe that last week we hit a humid 30 high. And to tell the truth despite longing for sunshine I actually prefer the 14. I can put on more clothes but there is a limit to how many I can take off in civilized society.

Plans for today. Actually a church just out of town is putting on a lobster supper. Seelerman mentioned earlier in the week that he might like to go but he hasn't made any reservations. I will phone this morning and see it they still have openings.

Other than that it's work on this gd puzzle. I found about ten pieces yesterday. A friend and I found over 20 last Wednesday afternoon. Yes, it might be done by Christmas.
 
Hot, hot, hot here today. I actually washed and put away my two heaviest winter coats. And it didn't jinx the weather! Of course, I've kept one of my lighter winter coats handy for those chilly morning dog walks that are still likely.
 
Star the Wonder-Cat is sick. He has a problem with his tail. There was some kind of benign lump on it. We thought at first the vet would have to cut his tail off, but they managed to save it.yet there is hope star.jpg
 
Went to the Protestant Kirchentag ( church days) with my sister on Friday. Some 110 000 people ,mostly under 30, have traveled to Berlin for that. The program is 100 pages thick. Obama was in a discussion with Merkel in front of the Brandenburg gate and even the left wing Taz newspaper said something nice about it. We listened to a hall full of brass instrument players, some 300 or more, practising for a concert in the evening. They were just participants, who brought their instruments along under the direction of a music director.
One hall was full of books, newspapers and christian knickknacks. Lots of fair trade things to purchase, lots of ecological, social or religious groups presenting at a booth. Interesting was a place presenting German pilgrimage paths- it doesn not have to be the Camino.
The days will end tomorrow with a closing worship in Wittenberg, the Luther town, after the brothers of Taize have celebrated an open worship tonight and the kids have camped open air after that ( weather is fine, we had 27 degrees today)
 
So, this morning I was introduced to a new Newfoundland saying. My response brought the house down.

The saying?

"Keep May snow it is good for the eyes."

So, initially I am bewildered, and it is explained to me that it is a bit of a folk medicine. You take freshly fallen snow in the month of may home and put it in your freezer and then, if you have sore eyes you put the snow on it and your eyes get better.

To my credit I did not start laughing at them. I just took a long time to process the info and possibly chart safe responses.

Then a helpful soul explained that she offered the saying because it was, as a matter of fact, snowing out.

Which helped solidify my response.

"If I see another snowfall in May I may as well gouge out my eyes." Which was greeted with much mirth.

And yes, on the 28th of May we had cold wet snow. Miserable day for weather.
