How was church today?

Welcome to Wondercafe2!

I am surprised that you never crossed paths with Rev David Giuliano - he seemed to spend a lot of time in Southern Ontario during the Emerging Spirit campaign. We have had some really fine Moderators in the United Church. Maybe one of the revs from WC2 will be a future Moderator - or one of the laity, for that matter.

@RichardBott was nominated one time but declined the nom or dropped out or something in the end, IIRC. That's the closest we've come so far.

At church yesterday we celebrated the communion of saints; by lighting candles for, and remembering, those who continue to be a positive influence on us.

We have done services like that in the past, but not recently. Maybe next year.

We did the same and I found it very moving. I have seen it done with names said out loud but this was done in silence.

Our service yesterday was an anniversary service, marking 27 years in our current church building. Instead of a sermon we had a number of lay people who were involved in the 1989 move to the new building share their memories of the experience and how they believed God had been a part of that decision. (The land, which is 3 acres in Central Ajax, was sold to the congregation by a local Christian developer for $1, but today that much land in Ajax would probably be worth millions. He believed every subdivision he built should have a church and had previously only donated land for "evangelical" denominations. We were also the second church in this particular subdivision, breaking his pattern - that, in itself, was perceived as meaningful by many and as a sign that our congregation has a purpose and role to play.) The move was necessitated because the old building was too small for the congregation and had limited parking. Although we've declined somewhat since 1989, PVUC is still one of the larger United Church congregations in our Presbytery and still very active in various ministries and missions, as well as offering what I feel is a very "family" feel to those who join us. So we did have a lot to celebrate. Yesterday's service is planned as a springboard to a much larger celebration next year. We've been able to trace the origins of Methodism in the area back to 1817, so we're going to make next year a sort of 200th anniversary of the origins of what would become Pickering Village United Church.

Because I have Sunday mornings free I chose to drive to Sarnia this morning and worship with friends at Grace United Church.

The Rev.Dr. Brad Morrison presided over worship to a fairly packed house. Preaching on the blessings and reciprocating woes in Luke's version of the beattitudes.

Music was good even if the organist/pianist was asked for a demonstration of Jazz (a musical form I do not tolerate well).

Sermon was thought provoking.

Got in some brief good-byes with my Swell buddies and then made the 2 hour trip home.

Because our minister was away preaching somewhere else today, today's service was taken over, and themed, by the Outreach Team. Very well done.

Busy, busy, busy - we observed Remembrance day with the laying of the wreath and the bugle call. We also had identical twin babies baptised - surrounded by family, including their mother and her identical twin sister.
And we received five people into the congregation by transfer.
Good service. Appropriate music. Message. After the service and a cup of coffee and fellowship time, those interested ajourned to the parlor for a meeting about the Remit changing the organization of the denomination from four courts to three councils.

Preached on Jonah (a first for me as far as I can recall) and moving beyond a tribal god and a tribal mentality. Had a number of people comment on how powerful a sermon it was.

It was different. The ritual for Remembrance Day was not what I was expecting. As always, I find that church is what I bring to it.
I had an interesting dialogue following church with people. The church has round tables which are setup for coffee& conversation. In addition, there was a soup luncheon today, so, lots of time to converse. Money went to Christmas baskets for a few families.

Remembrance Sunday - so poppys all around, military bugler, reading of the Honour Roll of those from our church who served (and I think died, but I'm not sure about that aspect); sang O Canada.
I had the pleasure of talking with two sisters from Korea - I have seen them several times before at our church & wanted to introduce myself. It was interesting to hear they are 'just visiting' but come often - from Korea! - to visit their parents who live in the area. They said they were schooled in England and since they are fluent English speakers they prefer to come to an English speaking church, rather than go with their parents to the Korean church. They were interested to know about our church history, and the history of the formation of the UCCan; I also mentioned our formal link to the Presbyterian church in Korea. Then I had to excuse myself to go do the counting - my turn on the rotation this week. And we balanced!!

No remembrance day service. Lay leader used lectionary. Looking at the details and the big picture. I was to do Sunday school-and correctly guessed no kids today. We had 7 last week. I did have materials ready-Psalm 98-make a joyful noise on Ipad, musical instruments I would have brought in from Sanctuary-and a I spy and Where's Waldo book following the theme of looking for details.

We're doing our Remembrance Day service next Sunday, which means I will have my yearly lie-in. It's one I almost never attend. I can't get my head around a 'right' way for a church to commemorate this without slipping into "just war" territory.

Attended a Presbyterian service with my sister today. Sang O Canada and had communion. Sermon was interesting about God giving Joshua the choice of using stones to build or to throw at enemies. Found some of the hymns kind of weird with the male imagery. Am so used to the gender neutral hymns we sing in the United Church it was a bit disconcerting to sing about God as "father" and others on the journey as "brothers." Will enjoy the hymns more next week back at my own church no doubt. ;)

well, i was at a united church today, and sang a hymn with god as "he". I do find it odd, but, I don't mind if in balance with God as she, and other images. I do prefer gender neutral references.
