Around the time I turned forty, my mother recommended a favourite book of hers, and I knew she felt it significant to her experience as a woman in her seventies. I felt she wanted me to know she saw herself in the character. I read it and liked it, but at the time I was engrossed in my own life. My mum passed away before we could have those conversations. I doubt at the time I could have understood her anyway. Fast forward thirty years. I bought a copy of "The Book of Eve", by Constance Beresford-Howe. I have been reflecting so much on my mother's life lately, particularily as I approach the age she was when she passed away, and felt ready to meet a bit of her in this book. I get it completely. Choose freedom. Don't waste yourself on those who don't value you. A small, handmade life can be grand. Women are smart and self-sufficient. Never too old to try something new....And yes. I wish I knew all that sooner.
Our son used to read a LOT. Now he doesn't read anything for pleasure - just instructions. His traumatic brain injury left him with deficits - one of them is poor short term memory. He can no longer hold a story in his head as he turns pages.Just started a book called: The Arts and the Creation of Mind.
So far the message is that the creative arts aren’t anti-intellectual but they are anti-efficiency. Efficiency is not their greatest value in an efficiency wired society, nor should it be.
Ironically - speaking of efficiency - I do feel like I read a lot but it’s all over the place. I’m not so good at reading books efficiently anymore for a number of reasons, internet/ social media brain being among them. I’m easily distractible…I had to stop and tell you this after only a few pages lol! When I have to re-read the pages I tend to fall asleep (whereas screens keep me awake). Maybe I’ll read the whole thing? I have several started books here. I do like books but they don’t seem to like how my brain works.
