But it's not as much of problem here because we have built a culture around the understanding that there are limits to free speech (I.e. Not free to spread hate towards protected groups) in an equitable and civil society - with more of a common understanding of why it's not acceptable. It's part of our constitutional and cultural ethos - whereas in the states their constitutional and cultural ethos is a little different.US is one of the least intolerant countries in the world
Free speech is pretty important in US. It provides the alternative to violence and doesn't require everyone to like and dislike, love or hate the same things.
Just look at the countries with serious free speech problems; racism is rife there.
A reminder: drive hate underground and it festers...
There'd have to be something wrong with me - seriously - if I 'didn't' react to some of your posts. Certain posts, particularly. It's odd how you can get away with s**t like that, and even have defenders - and people putting me down for taking offense to it - when I can't even make a joke about Trump/KFC/coca-cola and lithium without the "snowflakes" being offended (I use the term ironically to point out how hypocritical it is). You are a troll. You have helped set a tone around here whereby being an emotional person is a bad thing - as if person cannot have emotion and reason. It's human for crying out loud. There is nothing wrong with having appropriate emotions to inappropriate treatment. There is nothing wrong with emotions being part of responses to emotional topics. There is nothing wrong with having emotions. There is nothing abnormal about feeling hurt by verbal and emotional abuse. You have levelled it at me more than a few times. But you have the uncanny ability to get away with it because you're a smart troll. If you're going for laughs from it at the expense of "the weakest link" most of the time, and pats on the back for rousing, yet hurtful, hyperbole at other times - you're still just being a troll. He is used to getting his own way. He feels entitled to break rules and loyalty is the most important thing to him. He seems to harbour some decidedly bigoted beliefs that resonated with racist organizations and people, and he is loyal to them, and they to him. These are the scared people I was talking about. They alone did not get him elected, but they sure as hell put him over the top. The rest you can hang on the Democrats, who didn't talk about what they would do, so much as how bad Trump was. They didn't need to point that out. The ran a bad campaign. Most thought it wouldn't matter. It did.
You can't see it from this perspective. If you care deeply about something, the other side is a mystery to you and you can't understand why anyone would feel that way.
I try to leave it alone, but here, you're mostly on the side I'm on, and your help is killing me.
You can tell me the sky is blue, and I might say it's more grey today. You will then tell me that I must be blind and I'm anti-blue. In your second post, I'll be called a greyist. It will descend from there. I'll consider bouncing my head off a block wall.
My previous post pointed out how your reluctance to see things from the perspective of other people is likely the key reason for your inability to connect readers with your arguments. Am I wrong? Are you doing spectacularly with changing opinions? Am I the only one disagreeing with you? I don't see it, and I think this is a big reason.
You call me a troll, because you react emotionally to my posts. You think I'm trying for that response. Every time you respond emotionally to my posts, my head drops. This is not fun for me. This is draining.
So all of the president's supporters are racist? That's ridiculous and a good example of why critical thinking is needed more than ever.
Oh well. It's just the name of a building. Sir John A. MacDonald can be taught about - the good and bad - in history books. There are plenty of schools not named after politicians - they could be named after the neighbourhood or the street, etc. - are they learning less history than those whose schools are named after politicians? Let the students name their own school.
I feel disappointed in what you've been saying lately.
I sometimes point out where you use exactly the same rhetoric that others use. It's often worse. But because it's from *your* POV, it's fine. From anyone else's POV, it's not. People see that. It's odd how you can get away with s**t like that, and even have defenders - and people putting me down for taking offense to it - when I can't even make a joke about Trump/KFC/coca-cola and lithium without the "snowflakes" being offended (I use the term ironically to point out how hypocritical it is).
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means. You are a troll.
You can't use emotions as a trump card (no pun intended). You have raw emotions without viable reasons behind them. Emotions from you are like the word "--- PERIOD ---" for unsafe. Both are overused and fail to compensate for a lack of arguments.
Kimmio, if I declared open season on you like I have on some others here at times, you would be in the fetal position and unable to post. I know I can't do that with you. I don't do that with you. Everyone else knows I don't. Everyone knows I do not enjoy this. I was able to sneak in one Princess Bride reference, but otherwise, this has been a pain to write, because you've got me trying to be serious so as not to upset you. There are times I will absolutely write something to get laughs at someone's expense and not care one whit about the feelings of the person I'm writing to, because they earned it. I don't think I've ever done that with you.
Kimmio. Seriously. And I don't care if anyone agrees or disagrees with what I say.
Those of us of British and French descent are the products of political societies very much like that of Trump. Our racism destroyed our native peoples - and we're still doing nothing about it. We have a history of profound anti-semitism, anti-Africanism, anti-Oriental - you name it.
And there's still a lot of it out there.
