"Right-wing crazies thought Obama would commit genocide. Left-wing crazies thought the same about Trump. They were both right about the genocide but not about where it would happen."

.... I spent a few bucks on some dollar store/ thrift store sparkle to put in my room.

Really, I don't think it's Christmas decorating that's really getting in the way of feeding the poor - it's possible for governments to afford both - and even the soup kitchens and church food ministries put up some decorations.

You and a whole lot of others, Kimmio. People donate used Christmas decorations to our church out-reach program. New volunteers (including me when I first started) are surprised at how the guests are attracted to these, far more than to the tables with non-perishable food. We discussed this and realized that for many people a red bow on the door of their dreary room at the end of a long and colourless hallway is more important than another can of beans; and a cracked ceramic Santa on their table cheeers them more than another box of pasta.

AND it is not up to us to question their judgment.

Judgement ?????

Are these power lost in the greatest state of emotions? Does this result in naïveté ... and some satyr (advocate) about the rule of a God of contained love ... a polity of self awareness only ... may require some sol etude ...

God spoke to you to tell you not to use candles?

St. Anthony United Church had then, and continues to have their insurance needs met by, Anthony Insurance. Not as nepotistic as it sounds.

As far as I am aware God has not specifically told any church to use quite as many candles as we did for our Christmas Eve service and not worry about it.

Having spent some pre-ministry time studying Fire Protection Technology I am particularly cognizant of fire safety and what constitutes good practice. I was always leery of having that many candles on the go all at once and I did raise concerns to the Official Board. As a Mainlander my concerns were met with much entertainment. "You don't think we are going to set ourselves and the Church on fire do you Reverend?"

My best answer was, "Well, not intentionally."

Where would the church be (fund wise) without volunteers ?

Generally, we would be nowhere.

Specifically when it comes to ornamentation/decoration, we'd be more Spartan. I don't think that would be such a bad thing. I am mindful, however that a lot of what we now consider ornamentation served a different purpose in pre-literate societies.

With all the growing hysteria about foreign interference in US and European politics ... are western states finally going to show as much concern about the malign influence of Israel’s lobbyists as they do about Russian hackers?

I too find it frightening. Even if, as Mendalla says, the announcement is the continuation of the same policy more or less...the announcement itself fuels the discord. ...the announcement has just upset the apple cart. And that is Trump.
  • For decades, the platforms of both the Republican and Democratic parties have called for recognition of Jerusalem as the undivided capital of Israel. Neither party has acknowledged that Jerusalem is the commercial, cultural, educational, and religious center for Palestinian life.
  • In 2012, then-Los Angeles mayor and current California gubernatorial candidate Antonio Villaraigosa, violated party rules by inserting an amendment into the Democratic Party platform recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital without the requisite two-thirds majority. In the 2016 platform, nominee Hillary Clinton—an advocate of moving the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem—successfully pushed for language declaring that Jerusalem “should remain the capital of Israel” while again saying nothing of Palestinian concerns.

So while Trump’s dangerous and provocative 'announcement' regarding Jerusalem requires strong, broad-based opposition - shooting the 'messenger de jour' is not going to change anything.

It is unfortunate that, at least in this case, there is no real opposition party.

This is the real reason Trump declared Jerusalem the capital of Israel

I was thinking when the announcement was made to move the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, it was a dog whistle to Trump's evangelical Christian base that he is somehow "sent by God" to hasten the End Times. This article lays it out quite neatly, including the interesting observation that only 40% of Jews want the embassy moved, but 82% of white evangelicals do. You see, once the Jews rebuild their temple, their messiah will be revealed to them, and it will be
Jesus
, and that will force the Jews to choose Christianity.

It all makes perfect sense if you're f***ing insane.

Jerusalem Syndrome

fascinating
it seems that in 1995 US congress passed a law requiring the embassy to be moved from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem

and that it hasn't been moved because the 3 presidents after that used a special POTUS waiver to circumvent the move, citing national security interests...

Why declaring Jerusalem capital of Israel is controversial - CNN

the adult world is so confusing lol

(also funny 2 see how many different media outlets seem 2 be using the same narrative so quickly)

Rumsfeld reminds me of my dad. He sounds reasonable, not out of his mind. Conservative. Trump supporter. The problem is, that there is some truth to what @chansen is saying, too. The extreme factions of all three Abrahimic religions are to some extent, "colluding", to try to bring about prophesy - regardless of whether they're 'enemies' or not. It's deliberate. They know it will provoke more conflict. They know what each other is doing and how they're going to react if they do it, it seems. And it is fking crazy. It's definitely not helpful to peace. But fairly secular, acedemic republican types won't see it. And secular academic democrat types, do, I think, but they are trying to deal with it without mentioning it.

I'm with the Pope on this one.

And as a believer, I believe that prophesy is a warning, often of what not to do...rather than a prediction...based on past evidence of what humans tend to do to our detriment. Stirring the pot more during very tumultuous times...is what not to do.

Love God...like unto it, love your neighbour as yourself. All the law and the prophets hangs on this. The 'prophets' were warning people what their behaviour could lead to...because they were wise enough to observe what human behaviour could lead to. It's not magic. The prophets didn't necessarily want their warnings to come true. Jonah did, but he didn't love his enemies and everything he touched withered away.

I agree. Non-Intervention. Get your own house in order US!

Here is something:
  • Saudi Arabia has cultivated the US as an ally against Iran, but the expected US action will make it impossible to even pretend that “the peace process” is going anywhere. This has been true for years, but the pretense that it was and that the US was a fair-minded arbitrator on Israel-Palestinian issues enabled Muslim states like Saudi Arabia to say that they were keeping close to the US in order to help the Palestinians.

Here is something else:
  • The US recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and the long term move of US embassy to Jerusalem affects little on the ground, But it may have a profound symbolic impact because many Muslims will see the US action as posing an increased threat to the Islamic holy sites in Jerusalem, the Haram esh-Sharif, on which stands the Dome of the Rock, and al-Aqsa mosque. Their fate will concern and possibly mobilise many of the 1.5 billion Muslims who make up 22 per cent of the world’s population.

Depends on what you see the God Idea*Li as ... integrally w/o thought, or with some thoughts and clues ... then if you did everything on gut passions ... would you be able to divine or discriminate between good and evil gods? Some of a chaos one must be dipped into for experience of the endless axiom ... resolution? We just haven't a clue ... thus tis all as Seeler stated in another thread ... the light of Jacobean if you can see it sprout ... it can grow into a monster ...
